Course Start DatesFriday 28th February 2020
About the Course
Throwing Courses are suitable for complete beginners and for people with throwing experience wishing to improve their skills.
You will be guided through each of the stages of throwing, starting with preparing clay for throwing, centring the clay on the wheel, to turning into cylinders and finally finishing your pot so that it is ready to be taken off the wheel. You will learn how to make small adjustments to improve each stage of the process, and how to transform simple cylinders in many different ways, including how to make bowls. More experienced students will start to work on more complex forms, larger forms, working with different clay bodies and learning more complex glazing techniques. Students will go onto learn how to create balconies and lids, necks for bottles, wide based plates, throwing off the hump and throwing on bats when they are ready.
Students will learn how to turn foot-rings into the bases of their pots, as well as different decoration techniques. They will also be taught how to finesse their work and make it ready for firing. The last class will be spent learning how to glaze the pots that have been made.
What to expect: The Clay Room UK is set within a building housing a collection of artists studios. We currently have 5 wheels for throwing so that you get plenty of one-on-one help, advice and support. All classes are friendly and welcoming, no experience is required, the projects are designed to get your creative ideas flowing. There are examples to give you starting points, and plenty of books and magazines for inspiration. You can make yourself tea and coffee at any point during the classes. There is also a social aspect to the Clay Room, and you will be invited to join us on trips to Ceramics shows and fairs, any competitions and open studios if you want to get involved.
There is a small material fee of £6 per kg of finished fired work for standard studio clay, £8 per kg for porcelain.
Please wear old clothes and shoes, bring an apron if you have one, and please bring a small towel or cloth for your hands when you are throwing.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

After handbuilding with clay for over a year elsewhere, I thought it was time to give throwing a try. I attended my first introductory throwing course in April and I am now on my third course. I have thoroughly enjoyed the courses. I was a complete beginner and even though there was much to learn, Sophie was attentive, encouraging and explained each step with patience and humour.
Sophie is an excellent teacher. Her instructions, demonstrations and explanations are clear and informative. She is able to answer any questions and is on hand to rescue any mishaps with explanations and reasons for the mishaps. Sophie is keen for you to improve and experiment with different clays and glazes.
The Clay Room is very well stocked with tools and equipment. It is organised and spacious. There is a relaxed atmosphere and everybody is made to feel welcome.
I have grown in confidence, and the pots I have produced have certainly shown improvement. The course is fun, satisfying and the time just flies by.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my course at the clay room and have already signed up to continue. I was a complete beginner and the atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed. The teaching is excellent, with clear instruction that allows you to steadily grow in skills and confidence, while working at your own pace. Highly recommended!

I attended Sophie's Introductory Throwing Course earlier this year and I absolutely loved it. I was a complete beginner and found that although there were a fair number of steps to follow to create a piece, each was well-explained and Sophie was always available to answer questions and provide guidance.
My pieces needed to be rescued at times, and on those occasions when I lacked the skill to resolve these on my own, Sophie stepped in to help. She didn't simply get the piece back to a state I could work with it again, Sophie took the time to explain what she was doing and the reasons for this. Incredibly helpful when I worked on subsequent pieces.
The whole experience was fun, engaging, and very hands on. I enjoyed it so much that I've signed up again!

This was the perfect introductory course to throwing! Sophie is a great teacher and gives lots of guidance through each stage of throwing which helped me to understanding the importance of different movements to start to form the clay. From never having thrown before, I have come away with a range of different pots which I am very happy with! The studio was really well stocked with different clays and glazes - I will definitely be back there again.
