Course Start Dates
Course dates are flexible; please get in touch for the next available date.
About the Course
Pottery throwing sessions for up to 3 people, each with a potter's wheel (can sometimes cater for more - please enquire). Adult tuition run throughout the year with Chris Greening in North Worcester.
You can choose to book either a one-off lesson that is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those revisiting skills that may have got rusty or, sign up for multiple sessions to complete a pottery project.
We will use earthenware (the clay used in garden pots) clay with coloured slips (liquid clay) which gives a wide range of decorative options. The lesson will include both making and decorating the pot, a great benefit of slipware pottery - rather than having to return for a separate decorating session.
The workshop is equipped with 3 potter’s wheels and a range of tools which will be available for you to try out.
Pottery is a very broad subject and it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start, but if you just want to “have a go at pottery” then we aim to throw and decorate at least two pots you can either take home (in raw clay state) at the end of the lesson or wait for it to be fired.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
One off “taster” lessons, as well as multiple sessions working on a range of projects can be catered for.
£45 per person.
A lesson includes approximately 5lb of clay and the firing of two of your pieces, which will be ready to collect in approximately 3 weeks. Alternatively, postage can be arranged if preferred.
Please Note (Horrid Small Print Alert!):
- Cancellation Policy: If you cancel your booking over 30 days from the course date you will be refunded 50% of the course fee less a £10 administration fee. If you cancel 30 days or less from the course date, I reserve the right to charge in full for the course unless a replacement person is booked for that specific course date.
- Collection of Pots: Due to lack of storage space I'm afraid I can only hold on to your beautiful pots for a month after they come out of the kiln. After that point they will be disposed of. If you are unable to collect them please contact me to discuss postage of your pots and a cost for that.
As first time potters we thoughly enjoyed our time with Chris and what a great teacher he is!
We managed to produce 6 pots between us that we shall display with pride.
Many thanks Chris.
Chris greening pottey - - #29622
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Some great work made - always lovely to see people enjoying their first experience of pottery. Many thanks for the kind words.
What a lovely day making pottery for the first time! Chris was a great teacher and we could all add our own creative touch to each pot. The steps involved are so interesting and it was so much fun using the wheel and decorating our pots! I will definitely be returning and I’ll be bringing friends too. Thanks so much Chris!
Megan Morgan - - #29587
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Hi Megan - many thanks for the kind comments. Some great pots made and decorated and will be out of the kiln in about 3 weeks.
Had a brilliant time with Chris, learning the basics of pottery. The explanations were very clear and Chris was very patient! We also learnt how to decorate what we had made which was a lot of fun. It was really interesting finding out about the different techniques and I would definitely recommend this to anyone.
Bethan - - #29559
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Bethan. The tapas dishes were fantastic and drying nicely on the shelf. They'll be ready for that tapas party in 3 weeks! best wishes, Chris.
Went for a birthday surprise and it did not disappoint.
It was a really wonderful and honest experience. Chris was incredibly patient and kind and we will both treasure our pots that we made forever. Would highly recommend this gorgeous adventure.
Lesley-Anne Moore - - #28486
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Lesley-Anne for the lovely review. It was a really great session - you both immersed yourselves in the throwing and decorating process, which is always nice and some great pots came out of the kiln.
Had a great afternoon with Chris, potting again after a 30 Yr gap! Surprised that I still had a feel for the clay, but needed Chris' expert guidance to get the best from it.
Collecting pots soon, so looking forward to seeing the results.
Good value, and a fun afternoon!
W O'Dell - - #28386
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Bill.
Chris was really knowledgable and very friendly. It was great to see from a lump of clay how easy it is to form into something handmade! It would have been great to have had a little longer as the decorating felt a bit rushed.
Claire Booth - - #28351
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks for the review Claire. The pots were lovely and just right for that tapas and nibbles evening! Best wishes, Chris.
We had a day with Chris and Sarah; pottery in the morning and glass fusion in the afternoon with a lovely lunch in the middle. Really great day and very highly recommended. Thanks both... We had such a great time. Looking forward to picking up all of our "stuff" in a few weeks 😁😁
Karen McKenzie Budd - - #28102
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Karen - I was very impressed how you and Stuart grasped the fundamentals and produced both technically and decoratively really nice pieces - I suspect there will be a very colourful tapas evening soon?! Best wishes, Chris.
Had a fantastic pottery session with Chris ...learning how to throw some pots with my daughter and niece. We had great fun and felt the joys of being creative.
Thanks so much
Chris lilwall - - #28078
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Chris - it was a great session - and some very nice pots made and all ready for you to collect. There was certainly a creative atmosphere evident!
Really fun introduction into pottery. Chris was incredibly helpful in showing us how to get started and guiding us throughout the day. Will be going back again. 10/10 from all of us on the day.
Paul Munslow - - #27994
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Paul - it was a really good session. Your artistic flair definitely shone through! Cheers, Chris.
I bought this as a Xmas present for my wife and two dear friends (these days more elk like) and we had a blast.
Chris and Sarah are very welcoming and very informative with calming guidance when things literally spin out of control.
The time we had was nicely structured and relaxed and the items we produced looked good (Paul you still win ) for mere amateurs.
General consensus is we will be coming back for more ........ cheers Chris & Sarah
Scot davis - - #27980
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Scot for the lovely review - and to Paul, Kate & Ruth for your enthusiasm in the session; it was great fun. The pots are drying nicely and will be going into the kiln for the first of two firings very soon.
My lovely daughters, Fiona and Sally, bought me a pottery taster session with Chris Greening Pottery. Chris was a wonderful teacher and we had a fantastic time. We even managed to make some bowl shaped objects which was due to his patience and expertise. They arrived today and following the firing look amazing! Thanks to Chris for a highly entertaining and instructive evening. Highly recommended
Colin Nash - - #26473
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Colin. It was a great session; some lovely pots made and great fun. Best wishes, Chris.
I was given a craft course voucher and so pleased that I found Chris. It had been a bucket list thing for me to use a potters wheel to make a pot and absolutely loved the day I spent at his studio. Chris is so knowledgeable and patient by the end of the day I had created a whole tapas bowl set! I can highly recommend him and cant wait to book again to develop my skills further.
M Lowe - - #26420
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Maggie.
A fantastic few hours with my family celebrating my birthday. Chris is a patient teacher......he needed to be, we were rubbish but we had such fun. 😃 I've collected our fired pots today and I'm so pleased with the results, they look beautiful.
C P - - #24896
Chris is very patient and a good teacher. He makes sure you leave with a sense of achievement and a couple or more pots, ready for firing. It was good fun and great to have one teacher to just two of us, so we both really learned something and improved, even in our one and a half hour slot. I'll definitely be booking more sessions.
Julie - - #24869
Response from Chris Greening Pottery:Many thanks Julie. I'm pleased to read you both enjoyed the lesson and are considering developing the skills you gained in the 1.5 hour slot.
My girlfriend and I booked a 1.5 hour pottery lesson with Chris, and it was brilliant! 10 minutes of guiding us through the process and we were straight on to the wheel, with Chris guiding us every step of the way. At the end we had a few pots ready for us to decorate, which will be sent to us when ready. A great experience for anyone wanting a practical introduction to pottery - great fun.
Alex - - #24106
We had a brilliant day with Chris for my daughter's birthday. He very kindly made us a tailor made course and managed to squeeze five people into his workshop and garden! We were there from 11-4 and took it in turns to use the wheels and a little hand building.
What stood out to me was the incredibly thoughtful organisation. Every detail - down to a lovely lunch was planned out. Chris started out by demonstrating basic throwing and then patiently guided each of us through making our first pot - or saucer in my case!! By pot 3, nice little bowls were being produced despite us all being beginners. After lunch we went out in the garden and enjoyed some messy play with slip to decorate our pots.
I would highly recommend Chris as a teacher - he is patient and very encouraging. He even made each of us a bowl to decorate in case ours didn't turn out.
Sarah Newth - - #23227
My friend and I had a lovely time learning a new craft, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this course to anyone who wanted to try it, Chris was very patient (he had to be as neither of us had a natural skill) :-)
Celia Cutler - - #21501
Did this course as an "all day" session along with the glass fusing taster. It was a great day out. Chris was really helpful and made sure we all got to a good result. My only point of note is that it was cold - to be fair this was pointed out on the joining instructions but I'd definitely have taken more layers if I'd thought about it!
michelle - - #20043
Had a brilliant time having a go at pottery with Chris. He is a great teacher and was even happy to post the pots we made to us after they had been through the kiln
I’ve already recommended the workshop to friends
Laura - - #19956
Chris was really friendly and helpful for me as a total beginner. He teaches really well with clear demonstrations and most importantly let’s you have plenty of time at the wheel. Doing some coloured slips was a super bonus that I wasn’t expecting! I highly recommend...
Brendan - - #19345
Fantastic day, 6 hours, 7 pieces made and decorated. All with patience and good humour. And after firing you get to take the work home. Just hope the pots are as good as my imagination has been telling me! Top job Chris.
David Webber - - #19334
I have now enjoyed two courses of 8 lessons with Chris.
He is a brilliant teacher and has so much patience ! I enjoyed all my lessons and am really pleased with the many things I made . Making pots, bowls and mugs on the wheel was great fun but I especially enjoyed making tiles /coasters and some long tapas dishes using slab rolled clay. Decorating everything using different coloured slips was fantastic fun too; even though I am no artist , with guidance from Chris I made things I am really proud of !
I can 100% recommend Chris to anyone considering pottery lessons.
Jo Dayer - - #19242
Chris was friendly and patient! It was our first time using a potters wheel, he demonstrated first then let us loose on the wheels! His guidance was so good we managed to make 3 lovely items each just in the one off session. We would both highly recommend Chris and would like to go back ourselves! Very good value for money and such a lovely experience!
Lauren Williams - - #18486
I returned with my son to spend another satisfying morning with Chris trying to improve my throwing skills and learning how to work with clay . This time we produced some fairly decent mugs. Think I am beginning to get the hang of it ! Chris is a great teacher. Such an enjoyable time and great experience . Everyone should try it !
Chris Smith - - #18360
I booked an introductory taster course with Chris, and had an absolutely fantastic time! I wasn't very confident initially, but Chris provided great tuition and support. He patiently guided me to produce several bowls/pots - and didn't mind at all when I required a few attempts to get it right! I was really pleased with my finished products - which we coloured with slip - and can't wait to see them once the firing process is complete. I would highly recommend this course to anyone - Chris has amazing skill at both pottery and tuition; you will have an amazing time!
Eleanor - - #17617
We had a fantastic class with Chris for our 9th (pottery) wedding anniversary. Chris was a clear and patient teacher so that we were soon able to use the wheel to create our own pots. We even got given some that he’d made to dip in the coloured slip to take home as well. Thanks for a great time.
Rachael Hartless - - #16424
Chris was patient, kind and hugely generous with his time and knowledge. He made the pottery course extra special. Pottery was a 'bucket list thing' for me and I am so glad that we chose Chris (and the lovely Sarah) cannot recommend the courses highly enough and have already booked to go back. Nicki x
Nicki - - #15753
Until my time with Chris, I had had no experience with pottery but was given three hours of tuition as a present. Chris provided patient and expert tuition in a warm, friendly environment with lots of tea. I ended up making seven different items over two sessions in two different glazes - from small mugs, to dishes for serving, say, nuts or olives. Chris looks after all the firing and keeps in regular contact to arrange pick-up of finished items.
I am really pleased with the results and the whole experience was really enjoyable - Chris is great company and offers the opportunity to move on to the next project, taking learned skills a bit further each time.
Would thoroughly recommend to anyone wishing to have a go at this lovely craft. :-)
Phil Jackson - - #14615
My mum and I had so much fun doing our one off pottery session with Chris. I felt very comfortable and completely at ease. I had no experience with pottery at all before we went, but finished the session with two little bowls and an interest in pursuing pottery as a hobby. Chris was very patient and an excellent teacher. I really enjoyed myself!
Laura Billingham - - #14417
My daughter and I had a one-off lesson with Chris (my birthday present from hubby). We spent a very enjoyable time throwing pots. Chris demonstrated all the steps and was very patient when I forgot what to do! He explained everything very clearly and was very helpful. A great evening. Thanks.
Jude Moreland - - #14316
Alice and I spent a most enjoyable morning working on the potters wheels in Chris’s well equipped workshop. We even managed to produce some mugs and bowls! Chris was a very knowledgeable, patient and encouraging teacher and it was great to have some one to one tuition.
Looking forward to collecting our finished products when they have been glazed and fired.
I would thoroughly recommend this course.
Chris Smith - - #13773
I went with my mother in law as a joint Christmas present from my sister in law and we had a fabulous time! We've both done a bit before and Chris was very adaptable, gauged our abilities very quickly and supported us as and when needed. We both felt much more confident as a result! He offered lots of tips and suggested various methods that helped me find my feet again on a wheel. He taught me alternative methods for handles and glazing that were interesting and much easier than I had learnt previously! The morning flew by and we had a wonderful time! Totally recommended and hope to go again soon!
Alice - - #13769
I booked 6 lessons with Chris and enjoyed every minute. Chris is a skilled teacher, very encouraging, explains everything really clearly and helps you produce beautiful pieces of pottery. I came away with an assortment of mugs, bowls and little vases, a full set of clay stamps (which were fun designing!) and a knowledge of how to throw, slip and decorate my creations.
I am hoping to now join a community pottery near home where I can continue my new passion.
Karen Urwin - - #13751
I had a one to one pottery lesson with Chris, my christmas present from my wife!
Chris was an excellent and patient teacher I thoroughly enjoyed myself and came away with five pots to show off my prowess.
I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend this course to anyone, I'm thinking of taking 2 others with me to try the three to one course.
Keith Williams - - #13237
My boyfriend organised for us both to complete a one off pottery class as my christmas gift which we completed last Thursday evening. I had wanted to have a go since watching The Great Pottery Throwdown. I had a fantastic evening having a go on the wheel and decorating tiles (both were harder than they looked) but Chris was a great teacher who was patient, informative and made us both feel at ease. We are already looking to book again and I am recommending to friends and family! The only bad thing was that my boyfriend was better than me!
Hannah - - #12257
My Mum encouraged me to have a go as I don't have the patience for many creative pastimes. I really enjoyed it; Chris is very good, responsive to whatever you wish to achieve. I had such a good time, I booked 6 more lessons. I'm making Mum a Christmas present now - she might regret the initial suggestion!
Jayne - - #11787
This was a fantastic evening. Chris is a most patient and encouraging teacher, and the individual support he offers really builds your confidence. The joy of being able to get straight into throwing a pot, and the sense of achievement at producing them, with his skilled guidance, made this a most memorable evening. I hadn't thrown a pot for nearly 50years and he made me believe I could do it again. Thankyou Chris.
Kate Fitzpatrick - - #11591
Chris's Introduction to Pottery course was a fabulous birthday gift from my husband. I thoroughly enjoyed my lesson with Chris, he was welcoming, friendly and patient. We started with how to centre the clay on the wheel and ended with several small pots of various shapes and sizes. I'm looking forward to picking them up in a couple of weeks, I have the pottery bug and will be booking my next lesson soon.
Louisa Harris - - #11449
An excellent evening with Chris who encouraged myself and my husband to enjoy our first pottery experience. Chris is welcoming and shares his knowledge of pottery with enthusiasm, clarity and patience. We learned how to 'throw' pots and decorate tiles...collecting them glazed a few weeks later. Many thanks Chris.
Sandra Aitken - - #11312
I had two lessons with Chris as a birthday gift as i am a big fan of the pottery throwdown on TV! I have to say i thoroughly enjoyed both lessons and it has given me a real enthusiasm for pot throwing. Chris was very welcoming, easy to get on with, explained everything slowly and clearly and was very encouraging. I created some small pots and a mug on first lesson and some bowls on my second lesson. He glazed and fired my first pots for me so they were ready to take away on my second lesson which was great. I also had some tiles to take home and scraffitto which was good fun and my wife and kids had a go too! A really great experience with a patient and knowledgeable potter - highly recommended.
Simon S - - #11168
A one-off pottery lesson as a birthday present, and it was hugely enjoyable and satisfying for a novice potter ! I learned to throw pots and decorate tiles, and returned later to collect my glazed items after firing. So pleased with my efforts, and many thanks Chris.
Jane W - - #10977
I really enjoyed my lessons with Chris, he is a skilled and patient teacher, and was happy to focus on my area of interest. As a beginner I learnt how to throw on the wheel, and was thrilled to see my progression as the pots improved: It was very exciting to see my final pieces once glazed and out of the kiln! Thanks to Chris, I can now throw confidently, and understand the processes of working with clay. I learned a lot through the clearly guided one-to-one tuition and would highly recommend this course.
