Join me at my Beginners Felt Picture Workshop to learn how to create a beautiful picture of your own using merino wool! On this half day workshop you will be taught how to lay down the merino wool fibres and build up the image and how to mix colours by carding. I will then take you step by step through the wet felting process.
You will leave with your own felt picture which you can further enhance at home with stitching if you wish. Half way through we will take a short break for coffee and home made cake. Workshops are suitable for beginners or those who already have some experience of felting.
All other felt picture making workshops are run throughout the year at The Barn in Houlton, Rugby close to Junction 18 of the M1. This is a beautiful community centre with lots of space and light, right next to the lovely Tuning Fork café, perfect for lunch before! There is plenty of free parking. The venue is all on one level, so suitable for wheelchair users.
Small groups ensure plenty of individual attention (max 6 people per class)
If you get a small group of your friends together, I am also happy to arrange a date to suit you - ideal for birthdays, ladies groups, hen nights and other celebrations!
‘What a truly enjoyable time was spent with Karen learning how to felt! From beginning to end the tuition was excellent, interspersed with laughter and cups of tea. On the day, please bring with you an old medium sized towel and a plastic bag to take your damp towel home in.

Karen kindly allowed my 10-year-old daughter to join this small course and it was wonderful. She is a brilliant teacher, has just the right balance between teaching technique and encouraging artistic decision making, and she really inspired my daughter, who left the course very proud of her beautiful piece of art - her first wet felting and something genuinely to be very proud of. The venue is perfect - easy to find and of a very high quality, and a lovely cafe and nature walk around too. Re Covid it just felt perfect - safe, sensible with just a small number of participants and a lovely airy room. Couldn't have asked for more!
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thank you Hannah for taking the time to leave such a lovely review. Your daughter was a delight to have in the class, I am so pleased she enjoyed it so much
A very enjoyable afternoon learning the basics of wet felting. A lovely airy space and a small number of students which meant Karen was able to give us all some individual attention.
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:I really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review Kathryn, many thanks!
This workshop was bought for me as a birthday present and postponed because of lockdowns so we finally enjoyed it yesterday! The venue in Rugby is easy to find and in a beautiful barn with lots of natural light and good facilities. Karen is enthusiastic and great at encouraging and supporting creativity and the trying of new techniques. The materials provided enabled me to produce a felted landscape that I know I will enjoy adding to with machine and hand embroidery to complete a work that I will want to keep. ( this is not always the case at the end of a workshop!). After so long without workshops, it was lovely to experience a well organised workshop offering good value with the opportunity to learn new skills in a small friendly group whose ages ranged from 10 to nearly 70. I can thoroughly recommend the experience.
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thank you so much Sue for taking the time to leave such a lovely and comprehensive review, I really appreciate it! Do let me know how you get on with adding embroidery and stitching to your beautiful picture
I travelled from Lincoln for this workshop. Karen is a great instructor, achieving just the right balance between teaching techniques, whilst also encouraging creativity. She also bakes amazing orange cake! I was very pleased with what I achieved in the time and am looking forward to adding some embroidery at a later date. This course would suit both those who have never felted before and those who are experienced in this craft. I feel that this half day has given me enough confidence and knowledge to continue to develop felting projects independently at home. A fun, creative workshop with an end product you will be pleased to take home. Go.... give it a try!
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thanks for taking the time to leave such a lovely review Gill! Good luck with your felt making kit and look forward to seeing you again, will keep you posted on future dates.
Karen’s Felting with Flowers course, at Garden Gate Rugby’s new beautiful studio, was extremely enjoyable, well-organised and inspiring. It was a very cheerful group, most of whom had not felted before, and everyone made a splendid, pleasing finished felt picture. I thoroughly recommend this course as it is like painting with colours but without any messy paints, and no previous artistic skills are needed necessarily! Thank you Karen!
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thank you for your lovely review Judy! Look forward to seeing you again soon to continue the felting journey!
What a fabulous morning! Karen took us through the fascinating process of making a felt picture from merino wool - and we all ended up with beautiful pieces of art. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in learning a new craft.
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review Sarah! And I loved the vibrantly colourful poppy picture you made!
I enjoyed learning how to make a wet felt picture. There's a lot more to it than I anticipated! Karen was both informative and supportive during the whole process. Still lots of time for friendly chat over tea and cake! A good fun morning.
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thank you for your review Sue! Yes, a bit of hard work involved in felting, but what a great result you achieved!
I had a really enjoyable morning. Karen is a lovely tutor, friendly, relaxed and is knowledgeable in her craft. Everyone's results were excellent. I've already booked for the Advanced workshop. Can you get a better recommendation?
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thanks for taking the time to leave a review Ann. So pleased you enjoyed it, and what a great flax field picture you created! Look forward to seeing you again in March.
I have been on two of Karen's courses now. She is very knowledgeable about her subject and able to explain the process very well. Karen takes care to support, encourage and teach whilst still allowing participants to be creative. There are plenty of materials to choose from and the course is well designed with plenty to do but it is still very relaxing.
On both of the courses I have attended all the participants were hugely enthusiastic, very friendly and keen to share ideas. It is a wonderful way to spend a relaxing Saturday morning and you will come away inspired.
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thank you so much for your kind review Louisa, it is much appreciated! Do let me see a photo of your finished flower picture once you've done some stitching!
I'm totally hooked on felting! Karen is a very knowledgable and enthusiastic teacher and she made the whole experience fun and informative. Most of us were novices but Karen put us at our ease and encouraged us to get creative. We all left feeling very pleased with our pictures. The other good thing was the delicious cake, tea and coffee on offer. I would recommend Karen's felting classes very highly.
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thank you so much for the lovely review Lucy! And what a great seascape picture you created! Maybe see you at another workshop soon.
If you want a relaxing, rewarding, fulfilling few hours, you can't do better that join Karen on one of her felting courses. I have learnt so much even though I knew nothing about felting beforehand. Karen guides you along without intrusion, towards your final piece of work, which you can hold up and say with pride, "I made that". Oh, and she makes seriously good cakes to have in the break!
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thank you for taking the time to leave such a lovely review Christine! Let me know how you get on with embellishing your lovely Van Gogh inspired picture! x
Last Saturday, April 27th I attended a felting workshop with Karen. What an enjoyable few hours. So informative and relaxing. I am totally hooked and as I bought one of Karen's starter packs I have done another picture at home. We all went home with a lovely piece of work encouraged along the process. Nice coffee and yummy cake. I shall definitely book another workshop to learn more. Thank you again Karen
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Thanks for taking the time to leave a review Barbara, its much appreciated! Hope to see you at another workshop sometime soon! x
I have just participated in my third workshop - I just love felting, particularly with Karen. It's such a calm, friendly experience every time. Karen explains the process so well and knows just how to help if you need it.
The Barn at Houlton is a lovely venue too - did I mention Karen also makes cake for attendees too?
I would highly recommend these workshops... I know I'm gushing but I would also say don't stop at one workshop, with felting being such a dynamic process, there's always more to get out of attending.
I recently attended a second workshop led by Karen, so I have now done both the introductory and advanced sessions. Both have been very well organised and resourced. Lots of ideas of things to do and patient, helpful tips, too, throughout the sessions on techniques to include on your picture. Excellent social occasions, too, as it's a great opportunity to chat to fellow crafters and see their approach. All complimented each time with tea/coffee and cake. The venue is delightful, too. A modern barn conversion, well lit rooms and easy access to all facilities for everyone. Can thoroughly recommend these courses.
I booked the beginners course with two friends before Christmas and we enjoyed it so much that we went back for the Advanced course on Saturday. Karen helped us with our wet felting with reminders of what to do and gentle suggestions for how to improve our pictures. The additional fibres and techniques she showed us have inspired me to get even more creative.
I really enjoyed making a wet felted picture and realising all the processes that went into it. A new craft for me and hopefully I will be able to attend an advanced class at some stage. Karen was very helpful at all times and the cake she made was delicious. Craft Course voucher was a good Christmas present choice.
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:It was lovely to meet you Susan and thank you for taking the time to review my course. I loved the landscape picture you created! Hope to see you at another course soon!
I really enjoyed this course. I've always wanted to learn how to make felt and this was a wonderful way to learn. I've got a lovely picture that I made to take home and I'm looking forward to doing another course with Karen.
Response from Karen Wyeth Contemporary Felt Artist:Many thanks for taking the time to leave me a review Sharon! So pleased you enjoyed the course, and what a great seascape you created! Will look forward to seeing you at another course soon!
Although I had never tried felting before, it was not daunting as Karen guided us step by step. The experience was great fun and I found everyone very friendly. I was very impressed with my painting at the end of the day and couldn’t quite believe that I had made it myself! I wholeheartedly recommend this course and Karen is an excellent teacher.
Making a felt picture was great fun. Each step was explained before you had a go yourself and Karen was always there ready to offer help, advice and encouragement. Merino wool is very tactile, smooth and soft to touch and the colours are so enticing! Anyone could do this workshop; you don’t need to be artistic, just able to lay out your chosen picture in wool. The wet felting gives movement to everything and that gives life to what might otherwise be just a static ‘copy’. It’s fascinating to do because you never quite know what the results will be! But a warning, it is addictive…
I am about to do my 3rd felting course with Karen and I'm already hooked! Karen is an excellent teacher and everyone always creates something beautiful to take home with them. The courses are small and friendly and great value for money. A course with Karen would make an excellent gift for a crafty friend too. And Karen's homemade cake is always a yummy treat.
