Design and carve your own hairpin

Description

Join me in Glasgow's vibrant Govanhill for a shiny new workshop in wood carving! Wood is such an amazing material to work with, it lends itself to many objects and applications. My workshops are formulated with versatility and simplicity in mind - how wood can be used to carve everyday objects, and how to do it in such a way that everyone can make such an object themselves. This can be accessories like hairpins and rings, bookends, lamp shades, door handles, possibilities are endless! Today we can pretty much buy anything we want so things made by hands, especially our own hands, become more and more special. This is where the idea for this workshop came from, essentially allowing an everyday object become something extra-ordinary. A hairpin needs to be a tactile and pleasant object and one you can make yourself will add to its value as far as accessories go. Whether it's for you or a present for someone a handmade object like this will be special because you made it, with love and care. You might recognise a similar feeling from eating with a spoon that was hand carved or sitting on a stool that was hand made. This workshop is open to anyone who would like to work with their hands; absolute beginners as well as experienced carvers are welcome. You are welcome to bring a design or an inspiration for a hairpin, however I will provide some directions for those looking to be inspired. Once you've decided on a design you will choose the wood, cut out the shape with a saw and then proceed to work on it with a carving knife. While whittling requires concentration and safe practice, it is also an immensely pleasurable thing to do. Towards the end of the day we will sand the finished hairpins, and put some beeswax or mineral oil on them to bring out the grain. Feel free to bring any tools that you would like to use, however everything you will need will be provided. There will be one hour break for lunch at 1pm.
