About the Course

This is an introductory workshop looking at how we can can use everyday materials to create small art pieces to reflect our connection to the landscape and nature. We will share processes and ideas based on some of the artist’s personal approaches to creating mixed media works with found materials. We will look at transforming paper into a cloth-like appearance and feel through Momigami (Japanese crumpling) and combining it with textile and stitch to create small postcard size samples. The focus will be on hand stitching as an extension of mark making and drawing

STUDENT PREPARATION FOR WORKSHOP:
Please bring the following that should all fit in one small bag:

Postcards and images representing a place you have been or travelled to. These will be used as an initial source of inspiration. Themes could be gardens or Natural History. The images and text might relate to plants, insects or birds. (based on the ideas of the plant hunter or a naturalist recording the things they see.)

Equipment: Hand sewing equipment (scissors,a few threads for hand stitching, pins). Waterproof felt pen, if you have one. Sketchbook/camera

Paper and textiles inspired by your theme. Brown wrapping paper or large brown envelopes, tissue paper, Collect assorted waste papers from patterned paper bags, magazines, oriental specialist papers, Photocopies printed with images of plants and nature from your favourite books or illustrations or even copies of your own drawings.

Gathered fabric scraps: Writing, prints, lace, scraps of cotton/ linen, silk fabrics with or without prints- various sizes.

TUTOR DETAILS:

Cas Holmes has a degree in Fine Arts and has travelled widely as a means of developing her work as a textile artist. Specifically, she has visited Japan for two periods of long-term study, researched art based organisations (using re-cycled and found materials) in Canada, and most recently spent time studying and working in India and Australia.

Her work is strongly influenced by the juxtaposition of the natural and built worlds, and she is constantly developing techniques based around drawing and the use of colour. Found materials are layered in her work to reflect the rituals of making, and the passing of time to create pieces of partly recycled textile art.

She is a truly inspirational and innovative artist.
