About the Course
Enjoy a day of creativity and fun, by retreating to the foot of the East Sussex Downs, for a one day workshop experience led by Laura.
Courses can be tailored for complete beginners and also for intermediate artists wishing to explore new approaches.
You will be supported to make a unique mixed-media artwork to take home at the end of the day, by being playful and exploring different mixed-media techniques.
The day covers various aspects of mixed-media techniques:
- Working with different mediums, including paint, gesso and gels
- Painting backgrounds and layers using different techniques
- Playing with papers, fabric, photographs and collage
- Using found and repurposed materials
- Stamping and stencilling
- Adding texture
I like to use recycled and found materials in my workshops, and to add layers of meaning in the artwork by using materials which have meaning to you personally. If you have some paper or material that you wish to incorporate into your work that is meaningful to you, then please feel free to bring this along with you & we can advise if it is suitable to use (examples include a photocopy of a special photograph, a map, a letter, a small piece of lace, and so on).
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

Art Day 21/08/2019
Laura's mixed media art day was an opportunity to "dabble" in various materials that personally I had not used before, and/or once again try working with acrylics. She had many artefacts, materials and paints for use and we all ended up with a small collage to take home. She was very encouraging, giving demonstrations and also showing her work to inspire us. The morning was spent trying out ideas, gluing and painting on paper before starting on our mini canvas that we had all been given.
The class is in her beautiful home, which is also close to the coast. I was warmly greeted and we were treated to delicious refreshments throughout the day. We were 5 ladies which may be the total at any given class, you may want to check.

This workshop was a fantastic introduction to mixed media techniques and I particularly enjoyed the time allowed for experimentation. The atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed and Laura was a lovely and inspirational teacher. I came away feeling very inspired to create more, what a wonderful way to spend a day.

Not having done any sort of art work before, this course gave the opportunity to mess about with textures, embellishments, colours and ideas. A good starting point for anyone wanting to have ago at a new experience.

A great course. Laura was very friendly and welcoming. We were shown techniques in the morning and were then given a variety of materials to use to produce our own painting in the afternoon. A great course especially for beginners if you want to explore themes and ideas through mixed media.

What a lovely day! We learnt many techniques, experimented with colour and finishes and it was great for the novice and for those who had some experience and wanted to try something different. Laura was lovely, it was a very relaxed day, the room was wonderful and bright and was great to share the day with a couple of others who you got to know throughout the day. Would recommend for a great day out.

This was a great day of experimentation and play. It was great to use some mediums I had not used. The relaxed atmosphere meant that ideas and experience was shared well.

Had a really super day with Laura. Spent the morning trying out lots of techniques and materials, which gave me lots of new ideas not only to use on my canvas but for other projects I do.
After lunch we worked on the canvas using lots of different materials and applying the ideas from earlier in the day.
Laura is a very well organised and patient teacher, and I felt well supported and encouraged. It is a compliment to her skill that we produced very different canvases to take home despite being at the same workshop. I was really proud of my efforts!

When I read Laura's description of this mixed media workshop, it looked just right for me - not an artist, just someone who enjoys art and wants to learn. I was not disappointed. Laura was an excellent teacher, very patient and willing to give tips and encouragement when I felt I was not up to it!
Laura had a wealth of materials for us to dip into and helped us use paint, stencils and found items we would probably never have thought of ourselves. This will definitely change the way I look at re-using odds and ends to create images in the future.
Her studio was airy and welcoming along with refreshments and even music.
I highly recommend this fun and relaxing course.

I had not done any artwork since school - long time ago - and was a bit apprehensive about being a complete beginner. The workshop description sounded ideal and indeed it was exactly what I wanted and more. Laura is so encouraging. She started by showing us techniques to build background textures and supplied a wealth of interesting materials to use with lots of ideas to get the creative juices flowing. It was such fun and the day flew by. I came away completely inspired and the next day started looking for items to recycle into artwork - a day with Laura has given me an artistic eye!

An excellent day that totally met my expectations. I was so inspired that I quickly got through my 'must do' jobs the following morning and then got to it using an old canvas and mix of bits that I had at home and was then happily engaged for the next five hours. The course was relaxed, informative, encouraging and it was great to explore someone else's resources and note that I throw far too much out! I want to get on with the next one now.

I had such fun - and that's what art is all about, right? We experimented and investigated different textures and paints. We stencilled, brushed, paletted, glued and admired. I learned so much and Laura has given me confidence in my art. I absolutely love the canvas I produced at the end of the day (I usual despise what I have created!) Totally recommended.

I really enjoyed this class, I feel that I was taught everything that I need to know to be able to do a mixed media picture at home - which I'm definitely going to do. Laura was very organised, relaxed and encouraging and she had a wealth of materials to choose from. If you want to explore mixed media that I would definitely recommend this class.

Laura is a very encouraging and supportive tutor. She discussed her work ethos which I found very interesting before we moved on to try out various techniques. She had many different materials and mediums to use and encouraged us to try them out to see what they were like. She was very organised in her approach to the day, ensuring that there was plenty of time to both try stuff out and finish the day with a completed piece of work. Lunch was delicious!

I went on this course not really knowing what to expect, but after a really fun day I came away feeling excited by the prospect of making more mixed media pieces. I found Laura to be a really supportive and encouraging workshop leader, which was lovely especially when I really wasn't sure how the artwork was going to turn out. We learned new techniques and had the chance to experiment with different types of textures and paints before starting on our main project, which made me feel more confident when I was creating my artwork. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and would recommend it to anyone looking to experiment with a new craft with an inspiring and knowledgeable tutor.
