Cityscapes in Sketches and Mixed Media - Edinburgh, with Mark Kirkham and Julie Galante
X

Description

Welcome to a brand new workshop combining sketching and mixed media with Edinburgh artists Mark Kirkham and Julie Galante. Join them for a full day of creativity as you are guided from initial ink drawings through watercolour and onto mixed media, using your initial sketches to work towards a finished original artwork of an Edinburgh cityscape.

During the day you will join Mark and Julie for three Zoom sessions during which each artist will share the tips and techniques they use in their own art works. You will learn how to use scale, perspective, various mediums and textures to tell the story of what you see around you, building your confidence and learning useful tricks of the trade that you will go one to use again and again.

In between the sessions you are encouraged to continue building on what we’ve done, either heading outside to find inspiration in the city, or working from reference photos of Edinburgh which will be provided for you.

SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY
10am-11.30am Sketching the city
In this first session we will look at sketching a cityscape with ink fine liners and watercolour with artist Mark Kirkham, known locally as the Edinburgh Sketcher. Mark will begin by explaining the materials in the kit and going through a few simple exercises using a fine liner, water brush and watercolours. We will then embark on some city vistas of Edinburgh which will increase your confidence in capturing a detailed view in a few quick lines and strokes of the brush.

You will complete multiple drawings incorporating single line techniques, perspective and a number of tips to help create scale and depth in your drawings. We will also add colour to the ink, using quick watercolour washes to create shadow and depth, and pick out details you wish to highlight within your drawings.

After the first session, you will be encouraged to use your techniques to create some drawings of your surroundings. Take a walk with your pen and paper, try some line drawings either outside or from a window.

1pm-2.30pm Taking your sketches further with mixed media
In the second live Zoom session, artist Julie Galante will introduce you to mixed media techniques that involve layering different types of wet and dry media to create interesting marks and textures. We’ll start with some experiments to get to know the properties of the different materials and how they can be combined to create various effects. Then we’ll move on to a larger piece based on one of your sketches from earlier in the day.

You are encouraged to continue adding layers to your piece between this session and the final one of the day.

4pm-5pm Finishing touches and sharing
We now bring our favourite composition to a finish by adding details and darker layers, reinforcing the initial lines of perspective but taking care not to lose the layers and textures. You will also have time to share your work and get some thoughts from Mark and Julie about what to do next or what variations you could try next time.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Mark runs many in person and online workshops and also captures weddings and live events for clients in his distinctive style.
