Carving - carving greenwood plates

X

Description

Spend two days learning how to carve greenwood plates with Nadine Fox Grundy. This course will be taught entirely with hand tools and is suitable for beginners or people who have done a little carving and want to try learning some new skills. Green wood carving is a fantastic skill to learn as it can be done anywhere, with few tools and very little space. You will look at how to split a log to achieve different shapes, appropriate wood selection, the best tools to use, shape and design and drying techniques. You will be shown how to use all the tools safely and effectively, in a way that looks after your body and the two days will give you the skills and inspiration to carry on carving at home Nadine will also discuss decoration and colour on wood. She uses homemade, natural paints as well as grown and foraged inks and chip carving on her crafts and will talk about how to use these pigments on your own work. There will be an opportunity to try these pigments out in combination with chip carving to create not only functional items but also beautiful ones! You will go away with a handmade plate, lots of enthusiasm and a knowledge of how to decorate wood. All tools and wood are provided. This course is taught in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere by Nadine Grundy who has 25 years experience teaching and making all sorts of crafts!

Greenwood Days have been running woodland craft courses since 1998, from a beautiful 90 acre wood in the National Forest on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border. We offer day, weekend, midweek and week-long courses ranging from traditional Windsor chair-making to contemporary willow sculpture, longbow making to spoon carving. Our tutors are all highly skilled professional craft workers who share our passion for preserving, promoting and passing on these crafts and techniques.
