About the Course
Students arrive at our lovely space in Godalming for a really interesting day of traditional upholstery, usually excited as they are unsure what the day entails.
The business owner and teacher is Sarah Dix, who has 13 years experience as a professional upholsterer. Sarah will enthuse her students with some history of upholstery and amusing anecdotes from the business. Having a fashion design background (she worked for Vivienne Westwood's PR company) students are surrounded by fabrics and furniture that Sarah has designed, making it feel like a real working, creative environment.
Students will work hard upholstering a drop in seat for a handmade beach wood footstool frame. This will give students the perfect introduction to the upholstery materials, tools and methods to go on and tackle something more challenging. We offer a sprung dining chair as a follow on workshop.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Please note that you will NOT need to bring any furniture with you, as a square beech wood footstool is included in the price. You will need to provide your own top fabric. You will require approximately half a metre of upholstery weight fabric.
All tools and materials are provided.
The atmosphere is fun and relaxed. Tea and coffee is available for £1, we break for half an hour for lunch and there are local shops to buy food from.
The beginners workshop was exactly what I was looking for. Sarah explained each stage so clearly to us and made sure we understood what we had to do. She explained why we were doing the techniques she was teaching us and how they have stood the test of time through history! It was a lovely relaxed environment and I left feeling confident that I could use the techniques at home on my own. It was a great starting point to hopefully build upon for the next course.

What a fantastic day! Really nice relaxed and warm welcome, then on to business. Step by step, patient and clear input from Sarah. Everything is explained clearly and demonsrated, with help on hand to guide you. Confidence grows as the day goes on and you come away with something to be proud of. On the day I attended, everyone was friendly and there was a nice cosy atmosphere. I was almost sad when it was over. Totally recommended thing to do.. (and there is a bakery just round the corner that does top pasties and lunch things) Dickie E

A nice and relaxed day spent learning how to upholster a stall. Sarah is very pleasant and patient. I loved every step of upholstering my stall and the end result was better than expected. I do recommend Sarah’s classes and I can’t wait for my next course.

As a novice to upholstery I found this beginners course great fun, and I had a great feeling of achievement making my first item of furniture. Sarah is a wonderful teacher, patient and knowledgeable the time flowed by in a nice relaxed learning environment. All of the participants shared encouragement as we progressed though each stage of the programme. My Husband also joined us and he too found the course really useful as a carpenter he found making furniture very enjoyable.
I highly recommend the beginner upholstery course offered by Sarah Louise Dix and hope to attend many more in the near future.

A really enjoyable introduction to upholstery. The course was well paced to ensure all participants completed their footstool. Sarah gave clear instructions, was supportive and showed a real enthusiasm for her craft. As a complete novice, I came away confident that I could upholster another drop-in seat on my own. Thank you.

Thoroughly enjoyed the day in an inspiring workshop. Sarah is great instructor who allowed each of us the time we needed on each stage of the process. I have now booked in for a ten week course starting at the end of April. Really looking forward to it!

Very relaxed day and fun to learn a new skill. Sarah helped at each stage and nice to have the workshop as part of the shop and see customer orders, inspiring as well as good talking pieces! I am now the proud owner of a new footstool and have booked for another workshop.
