Handmade at Helen's is absolutely delighted to welcome artist Leslie Marsh for her first ever UK workshop!
Book artist Leslie is driven by her love of nature and a fascination for cultural and family history. Using metal, stones and vintage findings, she forges relic-like book covers that call to mind medieval treasure bindings created during the Middle Ages. Leslie also spends a lot of time experimenting with the marks left by leaves on paper by steeping the two together. The resulting ecoprints form signature wrappers used in most of her work.
Her books are held in private collections across the US, Europe and Australia.
She is represented by Seager-Gray Gallery in Mill Valley, California, and Eclipse Gallery in Wilmington, North Carolina and teaches workshops and shows her work at various sites across the United States.
During this 3-day Ancient Wisdom workshop, students will create book covers from plaster, learning a number of ways to imprint and carve into them, and then bind pages that they have hand-dyed with plant-based dyes into the book using a Coptic stitch - a binding technique that has been around since the 4th century.
In this workshop Leslie will cover:
Plaster and plaster gauze as a medium for book covers:
using inks and paints
imprinting and carving designs in plaster
adding photo transfers
Plant based dyes:
Students will spend the weekend with these dyes at their disposal. They can dye pages, thread, or bits of fabric and lace to embellish their pages or covers. Leslie will provide a variety of dyes to experiment with, including indigo, black walnut, avocado, cabbage and more.
Learn the history and technique of this ancient art.
Pamphlet and Weaving stitches:
All materials necessary to the complete the book as shown will be supplied.
