Description

This day course will give you the chance to make (throwing on the wheel) some pottery items in the morning and trim and decorate them in the afternoon, leaving them with me to be fired and glazed. **Please note: the £190 price is for two people** After a welcome and introduction chat covering the different hand-building techniques (coil pot, pinch pot, slab built or wheel-thrown), you will choose which is your preferred method to create your clay items. I will give you a brief demo before you start and then it's over to you to enjoy the wonders of playing with clay, with my guidance. Your pots will get a chance to dry over lunchtime and then you will choose up to 2 to 3 items (depending on size) to trim and decorate in the afternoon using coloured underglazes or slips (runny clay). The items will be left with me to thoroughly dried, then bisque-fired. I will apply a glaze and fire them again. This all takes about 3-4 weeks before you can pick them up. Lunch is not included but there are many eateries in Dorking town or a pub down the road.- only 2 minutes drive. There is also a Tesco Express within a short walk, or bring your own packed lunch and eat it here. Review: "We really enjoyed our day learning how to throw pots with Marina. She is an excellent teacher, kind and patient when things go a bit wonky and full of praise for our efforts. Looking forward to seeing how our pots turn out." - Helen and Ellie See my other listings for half day courses.

Maker

My passion for pottery started in Cape Town, South Africa where I grew up surrounded by majestic mountains and wild oceans with its diverse scenery of coastlines, the veld, and wildlife. My mother was a potter and my dad an artist so my introduction to colours, shape and textures started at an early age, followed by a degree in art and then an MA in Ceramics. Now I live in the beautiful Surrey hills so am further inspired by the green rolling hills (Box Hill) and woods on my doorstep with bluebells and luminous rape seed fields in spring and many ferns to collect to imprint into clay. I love every process of pottery, whether its handbuilding or throwing on the wheel and enjoy sharing my knowledge I've built up over the past 30 + years with my students.
