Course Start DatesMonday 4th May 2020
About the Course
In this two day workshop you'll learn how to make a chicken wire sculpture of that most iconic animal, the hare. With lots of help and guidance, and using simple techniques, you'll make a sculpture of about 20 inches high that's suitable for display in the garden or indoors. Starting with a wire template and adding shape layer by layer you'll build your own fully three dimensional sitting hare.
Well-known wire sculptor, Chris Moss, uses a variety of metal materials, including new and recycled wire and mesh, to create stunning 3D sculptures particularly wild and domestic animals and birds. Chris has a love of nature and all her work reflects a detailed study of the anatomy and character of her subjects. Chris works on commissions and exhibits her work across the UK.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
This relaxed event takes place at our inspiring, purpose-built creative workshop located in a spectacular setting overlooking beautiful Coniston Water in the Lake District. To view more photos take a look at our Facebook or Instagram pages
We will provide a healthy lunch along with all refreshments and some sweet treats! All tools, materials and gloves are supplied for the duration of the workshop. Please note there is a £10 materials charge payable to Chris on the day.
Please wear an apron or casual clothes as wire can cause snags to precious textiles. Bring your specs if required for close work similar to reading or sewing. It isn't essential to have previous experience but please be aware that this is a full two day course and working with wire and making the numerous repetitive movements can be hard on fingers and wrists. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any queries about this.
After your workshop why not stay and relax at our adjacent property, Lanehead, the historic home of artist William G Collingwood and where Arthur Ransome taught William's grandchildren to sail in Swallow II and provided the inspiration for the book Swallows & Amazons.
Our accommodation is exclusive to Swallows & Artisans guests and their friends/families. Our room sizes are mixed and sleep 2 to 6 people and the majority have lake and mountain views. A breakdown of each room can be provided. Please contact me for rates and availability.
Refunds are unavailable but tickets can be transferred to an alternative date upon request.

I had a wonderful time at Swallows and Artisans where I attended a 2 day chicken wire workshop with artist Chris Moss. The whole experience was fabulous and surpassed all my expectations!
Both the accommodation and studio were wonderful and bright with stunning views in a beautiful location. The event was hosted by the lovely Karen who was very attentive and assisted by her equally lovely mum who provided us with scrumptious food.
Tutor Chris was very attentive and provided us all with clear instructions in a relaxed, informal manner making the experience very enjoyable and rewarding especially when we all managed to create a uniquely different hare to take home!
I had such a wonderful time, met some amazing souls and can't wait to return!

This was truly an amazing experience. I stayed at Swallow and Artisans which hosted the course event 3d Chicken Wire taught by Chris, a renowned artist and teacher in her craft.
The location was superb.. nature, Lake Coniston, fabulous modern accommodations provided by Karen who hosted together with Chris, our gifted and inspiring teacher .. it was magic ...
The studio, property, and views were gorgeous, away and in nature, but easily a walk into the lovely town of Coniston for dinner.
I came away with a stag head and a hare. Under Chris’ attentive manner and love of nature she helped me create a realistic piece of art I will treasure forever...
Planning to return first chance I get..

I had the most wonderful time, learning to sculpt a hare. The tutor Chris was amazing and informative. The location and view are wonderful and the lunch and homemade cakes were scrumptious. I am confident that I would be able to recreate another hare at home with the skills that I have acquired. I would recommend this two day course and will certainly be doing further courses at Swallows and Artisans!
