The Photic School of Art is a jewellery school based in Mid Devon, near the village of Cadeleigh, and around 10 miles North of Exeter (a 30 minute drive). It is tutored by contemporary artist and jeweller, Sam Photic.
Sam has exhibited his work with many of the highest calibre craft and art galleries in the UK, such as the Masterpiece London Art Fair. He has also assisted the production of works for other renowned and successful artists and makers, and provided lecturing to undergraduate university students.
Open classes are held at his studio on Saturdays on a pay as you go per hour basis (£15 per hour), and also available on weekdays for private fixed rate half (9am-1pm) or full day (9am-5pm with a short lunch break) bookings. Classes are kept small so there is plenty of time for each student, and beginners are very welcome.
A great first project for beginners is to make a plain ring, which is great fun to make and introduces a student to all of the main jewellery making techniques such as sawing, measuring, filing, forming, soldering, finishing, etc. This can be achieved in 4 hours for most students. Sam can provide some copper/brass for free for this project, or a student can purchase silver through Sam for a ring to keep.
Classes are £15 per hour on a pay as you go basis with tuition tailored to the needs of each student.
Please send an e-mail to arrange an available slot, and for detailed information and directions.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

I have absolutely loved the two workshops I’ve attended so far. Sam is a fantastic teacher and his encouragement, patience and guidance is superb. I look forward to working with Sam again soon and can’t recommend the workshops highly enough to anyone wanting to start out making jewellery or looking to advance their creative and technical skills.

Sam holds so much knowledge about jewellery making. I’ve learnt a whole lot from doing just two different project under his supervision. As a maker myself I especially like that he lets me experiment with challenging designs.
Sam is a very patient and knowledgeable tutor. He has a lot of experience about the various techniques and problem solving.
After a 1 day session I came away with a beautiful textured silver ring and very comfortable with the use of the tools, flames, solder, files, sawing and so on
I drove all the way down from London and spent an entire day there which was worth it. I have since booked additional days over the next few months. The location is beautiful and the perfect learning environment.
Sam is a natural teacher. He has a wealth of technical knowledge and huge enthusiasm to pass it on. He also seems to have a particular gift at problem solving.
Sam is endlessly patient and this combined with his enthusiasm and encouragement makes learning with him fun. I would recommend him to anyone whether they are just beginning or are experienced and just want to learn a particular technique.
