About the Course
Learn how to make your own beautiful fine silver jewellery from art clay silver, at my studio in Newcastle upon Tyne. No previous experience is necessary!
Silver clay, otherwise known as metal clay, when fired, which can be done using an inexpensive torch at home, results in 99.9% fine silver pieces. By the end of my course you will have some beautiful jewellery to take home.
In 3 hours I will teach you the following:
Rolling & cutting
Pre fire finishing
Post fire finishing
Oxidising to create 'antiquing'
Please contact me for alternative workshop dates if the ones advertised are not convenient. I offer workshops in small groups of between 1 and 4 people so that individual attention can be given.
I have been making jewellery from metal clay for a few years now. I completed a year long course at the London Jewellery School in September 2015 resulting in a Diploma in Creative Jewellery which included learning many techniques using silver clay.
Other skills include fused glass, resin, perspex, enamelling and silversmithing. I also attended an intensive 3 day course with Tracey Spurgin at Craftworx in Beverley, which enabled me to demonstrate different skills and techniques in working with silver clay. This resulted in me achieving Art Clay Silver Level 1 Diploma (ACWUK) in April 2016, which qualifies me to teach basic silver clay classes. I subsequently embarked on a ring making workshop with Natalia Coleman.
Recently I was very proud to be presented with the North Tyneside Business of the Month award - kindly voted for by my customers and reflecting some very kind feedback from people who have completed a course with me.

I had a really enjoyable morning making silver clay jewellery with Claire. The course began with Claire explaining all about silver clay, showing some examples and suggesting ideas. Claire then demonstrated the techniques needed before I started on my own project. The time went so quickly and the atmosphere was relaxed. I went away brimming with ideas for my next project, so I will be back! Many thanks.

Had a lovely afternoon with Claire learning the basics of silverclay jewellery. I contacted Claire through Craft Courses and she kindly arranged a course at short notice that fitted with my availability. Claire is friendly, informative and very helpful. She explained all aspects clearly and I managed to make some lovely pieces with Claire's guidance. I would thoroughly recommend Claire's course to everyone. Claire sent me away with helpful literature and an offer to contact her should I have any questions if I do more silverclay work at home. Thanks again Claire.
Kay Barnsley - - #25619
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:It was a lovely afternoon and great to meet you Kay!
We did this as a team building event from work. As a team of two we struggled to find something that we could do together until I found Claire's silver clay workshops. As the only ones there, we received Claire's full attention, guidance and support. Claire was very welcoming and explained each step, ensuring we understood what we needed to do. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and as complete beginners it was great to leave with pieces of jewellery we had made ourselves. I have worn my lovely pendant. Thanks for a great morning Claire.
Margaret & Denise - - #25206
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:It was lovely to meet you both! The textured mats we used were new and had lovely results. The pendants you made were beautifu!
I really enjoyed the course with Claire I attended recently, as my teenage son was ill and off school he came along too! Claire was very thorough with her explanations and taught, making her own piece alongside ours as an example.
We produced our own customised pieces, using a variety of techniques, Claire was very knowledgeable and explained the whys and what to look our for along the way, I feel inspired to try this at home and confident I could.
It was interesting also to learn of her experiences and interest in other craft mediums and jewellery making too - her workshop is like an Aladdins cave!
Susan Donald - - #24875
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:Thank you for your lovely review Susan it was good to meet you and your son. I look forward to arranging further workshops with you!
I had a great time today at this workshop. Claire was very welcoming and great in describing and showing me the techniques to make my Metal Clay jewellery, so much so that when I left I went online and bought a beginners kit. It was a lovely relaxing morning/afternoon. I made a pendant which I love.
I am looking forward to do another workshop. Plus Daisy the dog was adorable. 😆

I looked on the internet for a short introduction to making silver clay for my daughter and I. This was perfect, we were the only people there and had 100% attention, guidance and support. In 3 hours we made whatever we wanted, and I really like wearing my earrings. Thank you so much Claire for accommodating us at such short notice. A lovely lady, highly recommended by us!

A really enjoyable day. Claire explained everything with examples. She was welcoming, friendly and informative. We made our designs and Claire helped when things didn’t quite go according to plan so we left with our own designer jewellery. Really pleased.

This morning I attended Claire’s Silver Clay jewellery course at her home studio and I throughly enjoyed my three hour class and my one to one tuition. Claire is very welcoming and explains everything in a very easy to understand manner and I was able to ask as many questions as I wanted. She supplied coffee and cake as well as excellent information on where and what to purchase to continue this craft myself at home. As a complete beginner I was able to produce three items which I am thrilled with. I can highly recommend this course. Thank you Claire.

I contacted Claire via CraftCourses.com after seeing a post for her course on Instagram, as a couture milliner I wanted to explore the relevance that this interesting craft has for my work. We very quickly arranged a 1:1 session - when setting up a mutually convenient date I found Claire very easy and flexible to communicate with.
On arrival Claire greeted me warmly, and armed with a cup of tea, seated in her studio we started with the technical explanation of the processes involved in silver clay jewellery. It’s quite an involved process, but Claire is clearly very passionate about her craft, and guided me through the process gently, ensuring I understood everything. Then it was time for the hands on experience, and some three hours later I had three exquisite completed pieces, all finished using slightly different techniques.
Once back at home I decided that one of the techniques I had used would enhance further the main piece in my three piece silver clay collection. I contacted Claire again and she offered to finish off my dragonfly for me with the specific polishing technique I had fallen in love with. Imagine my delight yesterday on opening the package and viewed the finished piece which she had kindly worked upon further for me. This dedication confirms again that Claire is very committted to both her craft and her students, and I can only sing her praises. My beautiful silver clay butterfly is now destined to grace one of my new Autumn Collection hats, so I will be looking forward to posting about this on Instagram with a tag for Claire & CraftCourses.com of course!
Margaret Woodliff - - #16602
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:It was lovely helping Margaret create a beautiful piece for one of her hats and she also made further pieces of jewellery which also turned out really well. It was so interesting learning about her millinery work and I really look forward to seeing it on display on her finished hat!
Claire’s class was just great, I enjoyed every minute of it!! Claire made me feel comfortable and relaxed as soon as I got there. She made the instructions simple and straight forward, demonstrating each part of the process and suggesting slightly different methods which might be useful. Claire had lots and lots examples of finished and try-out pieces which were really lovely and gave me loads of ideas for my own stuff! I learnt a lot, met two lovely people, Claire and Trish, had cakes and coffee and left with some beautiful jewellery made by me! Thanks Claire!
Sue Browne - - #16548
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:You leaf Pendant was beautiful Sue and it was a great workshop! Thank you, Claire
I was not expecting to have one to one learning, so this was agreat bonus
as well as the laid back atmosphere and easy to follow instructions from Claire plus the excellent value for money I could not wish for better. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
Ann Davison - - #16448
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:It was lovely to meet you Ann the pieces you made were lovely especially the star pendant! Thank you for booking the workshop!
Lovely relaxed afternoon, I would never have had the courage to try this on my own but Claire was confident and reassuring. I arrived with a rather over ambitious idea in my head and Claire worked with me to produce a lovely unique piece that I will really treasure, even allowing the class to massively overrun so that my piece could be finished in the kiln. Do give this a try, you won't be disappointed.
Diane Cooke - - #15581
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:It was lovely to meet you Diane and I am so glad we were able to achieve all that we did and that you went away with the lovely piece you made! Thanks again!
I went along with my partner for this course and we had a great time.
Claire and Daisy gave us a lovely welcome and the session was relaxed and informative.
We were very happy with our pieces and Claire was a great teacher. We had tea cakes and laughter, mixed with learning about working with silver clay.
I would recommend Claire's course to anyone.
Jan Longworth - - #15556
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:You both made some lovely pieces and I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
I have just left Claire's house after a brilliant afternoon learning all about silver clay, I made a pendant necklace in a heart shape and textured and two other pieces to add to further lessons. Claire is very welcoming, friendly and can translate her enthusiasm to you so you come away wishing you could have stayed longer and made more.
Thank you Claire
Pam Wilson - - #15286
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:Thank you so much Pam I had a great afternoon showing you all about the basics of silver clay. You made some lovely pieces!
I had a very interesting and really informative afternoon thanks to Claire. I was very lucky to have a one to one lesson (not including Daisy!) and learned a lot from an excellent teacher, and it was amazing to see the transformation from a little piece of clay to heart pendant and letter pendant. I will certainly be making use of the information sheets provided by Claire to try using silver clay at home. I would highly recommend this course, and Claire to anyone interested in silver jewellery making.
Michael Moore - - #15164
Response from ToDot Handcrafted Goods:Many thanks for your comments Michael it was lovely to meet you. You made some great pieces of jewellery!
Claire was lovely and so informative for it being a beginners class I felt like I gained much more in depth knowledge than I thought I was going to get. Claire went through the process in a methodical easy informative way and I instantly felt at ease. She had lots of pieces to show different techniques to try yourself and a wealth of knowledge to go with this. She supplied me with enough sanding/polishing papers to get my pendants looking lovely at home. She also supplied me with some paper copies of all the information we had discussed and where I could purchase supplies.
I would recommend Claire’s classes to any of my friends and family. X
Emily Kasher-Kell - - #14774

I booked the silver clay course with Claire and she offered me a one to one session and was very quick and prompt about this. The course itself was brilliant. I learnt everything I needed to know to start this hobby at home and Claire went above and beyond to get me the information necessary to do this. She gave me a pack with all the info I needed and even sent follow up emails with more info. She is very attentive and helped me make some amazing pieces. I would definitely recommend her to anyone 👌🏼
Laura wilson - - #13422
My friend and I were interested in doing this course, but we have limited availability owing to work (and other) commitments. Claire was very accommodating and offered a course for just the two of us. We were both totally new to silver clay work, and found the course interesting - it was hands-on and we managed to come away with pieces that we had made and more importantly, that we could actually use. Claire was very friendly, and we enjoyed meeting her dog Daisy, who made us very welcome too!
Claire had a lot of equipment for us to use and gave us lots of tips in case we wanted to try using silver clay at home, including written information for us to take away.
Deborah Oxberry - - #12581
As Claire didn't have a course coming up she offered me a one to one class - an added bonus.
Claire was very warm and welcoming. She was able to explain the silver clay process clearly and it was very helpful to have my many questions answered so well. She even gave me a lot of written information and useful contacts to take home for future use.
I had a really enjoyable afternoon and have some new earrings too.
