An ideal class for beginners or improvers. Breathe new life into that piece you have been meaning to rescue from the loft or ‘get around’ to for some time! A maximum of 4 students per session, so you will get plenty of guidance. You will learn new skills and techniques to achieve professional results.
Projects: Determined by your choice of chair. Beginners are advised to take on a smaller project. *
Course timings: Wednesday morning from 9:30am -12 (noon) - 2.5 hours
Duration: This is a 'hop on, hop off' class, but a minimum of 2 morning sessions need to be booked during a month. They don't have to be consecutive.
Techniques: traditional or modern techniques taught. Be prepared to book onto a further course if you are working on a chair that is more complex.*
Tuition: appropriate class demonstrations and one-to-one work with Katie. Katie is an experienced furniture restorer, upholsterer and teacher with 8 years experience teaching craft skills. After completing the City & Guilds Diplomas in Traditional Furniture Making and Upholstery she qualified as a City & Guilds Trainer/Assessor and taught at a City & Guilds training centre in Bristol. She is also a qualified design and technology teacher with a degree in the History of Art and Design.
Skill level: Beginners or improvers.
Cost: £50 per session; this includes tuition and loan of tools. Materials required for renovation are available from approx. £5 upwards, dependent upon the project. You are also welcome to buy them online/bring your own.
Preparation: you will need to bring along a chair or frame and supply top cover fabric. You are welcome to remove coverings during the class to receive guidance on proper use of tools and stripping techniques. In this case, it is advisable to bring the piece along to the first session to receive tuition and then complete the process at home before the following session. This makes best use of the time.
Email a photo of your project to Katie, who will check that it is a suitable piece; all chairs are different. Your wooden frame should be sound and not require repair. Katie can quote to repair the chair for you should it be a piece that requires this work, but of course this would need to be arranged before the class begins.
Project Guidance*: For beginners a modern footstool (1m of fabric needed) or dining chair with covered back (approx 2m of fabric) can be completed in 3-4 sessions. Intermediate/improvers can bring more complex projects, but these may require additional sessions in the future. Fabric estimates: nursing/slipper chair (3-4m of fabric).
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
