Upholstery - Weekly daytime class over 4 Thursdays - 'Bring Your Own Project'

X

Description

An ideal upholstery class for improvers who have covered a footstool before and want to tackle a second project such as a nursing chair, side chair or more advanced project such as a wingback. You could also learn a variety of techniques on 2 smaller, but different pieces. Timings & dates: This class is from 9:30am-3:30pm. It runs every Thursday. This listing is for four consecutive Thursdays at a discount from the daily booking price. This also ensures you have a 'good run' at your project, while learning in a relaxed but purposeful environment with plentiful tea, coffee and biscuits. Class sizes: A maximum of 3 students per session ensures you will get plenty of guidance. You will learn new skills and techniques to achieve professional results. Projects: This is determined by your choice of chair and what the project needs. Traditional or modern methods are both taught... traditional methods are more time consuming. Please also consider if your chair needs reupholstering or recovering. Recovering = Taking the top fabric off and replacing with new - the structure of the seat is intact and strong enough to last many years of usage. Reupholstering = In need of ripping all layers off to bare frame, and rebuilding - uncomfortable to sit on, saggy, wobbly joints, springs falling through the base etc. Prepare to spend twice as long completing the fascinating upholstery rebuild process. A beginners project would be a drop in seat or footstool. A traditional nursing chair would be an ideal intermediate or 'improver's' project for the 4- week course. A wing-chair or small arm chair would be an advanced project, which also requires the sewing of a box cushion and may require additional sessions if you have no sewing experience. As a guide, a wing back chair can take 8 sessions or more dependent upon your level of skill. Upon booking, Katie will request that you email a photo of your project so she can check that it is a suitable piece; all chairs are different. Ideally, your wooden frame should be sound and not require extensive repair. Techniques: traditional or modern techniques taught, full re-upholstery or recovering. Tuition: appropriate class demonstrations and one-to-one work with Katie. Skill level: Improvers or beginners with some experience in sewing or working with textiles. Preparation: you will need to bring along a chair or frame and supply top cover fabric. You are welcome to remove coverings during the class to receive guidance on the proper use of tools and stripping techniques. In this case, it is advisable to bring the piece along to the first session to receive tuition and then complete the process at home before the following session. This makes the best use of the time. Tutor: Katie is an experienced furniture restorer, upholsterer and teacher with 10 years experience teaching craft skills. After completing the City & Guilds Diplomas in Traditional Furniture Making and Upholstery she qualified as a City & Guilds Trainer/Assessor and taught at a City & Guilds training centre in Bristol. She is also a qualified design and technology teacher with a degree in the History of Art and Design. *Timings & dates: This class is from 9:30pm-3:30pm, for 4 weeks on a Thursday. Bookings are made for the full 4 week term as a block. Term dates available are currently: • Thursday 15 September 2022 until Wed 6 October Venue & Facilities: Classes are run from Meticulous' studio at Spode Works - the site of the historic former pottery factory of Josiah Spode, which was in operation from 1776-2008. The old China Halls have now been converted into studios by the arts organisation ACAVA in partnership with Stoke-on-Trent City Council and the Arts Council England. Currently on site are the Spode Museum Trust Heritage Centre, The Quarter @ Potbank restaurant/bar/music venue, Potbank Aparthotel, and ACAVA Studios, where Meticulous is based. The onsite café and heritage centre provide a great venue for lunch. You are welcome to bring or buy your own lunch to eat either within the workshop or the communal seating area. Tea and coffee is supplied.
