About the Course
A two day course in making a mosaic for indoors or outdoors using the direct method and mixed media including pottery, pebbles, mirror, along with traditional glass and ceramic tesserae. On this course you are welcome to bring your own broken pottery or other materials to include in your work. You will be able to make, for example, a decorated terra cotta plant pot, or pebbles, a mosaic to hang on a tree, fencing or wall such as a sun catcher, a bird, dragonfly or butterfly, or a design of your choosing. The method involves placing material directly into a bed of cement based adhesive- it is a fun and free way of working. The finished mosaic can be placed indoors or out in your garden to enhance planting or add colour and interest. You are welcome to book two separate days if that suits- email me to arrange this.

I chose this course because it was close to home and I have done mosaic before and wanted to learn a new technique- I learnt how to work on paper initially and also to take note of which way up to lay the tiles when working in reverse- I enjoyed the great level of individual support given. There is plenty of workspace and choice of materials, and lots of cuppas and biscuits! I am very pleased with the shell mosaic I made using the 'crazy paving' style of laying tiles.

I was interested in this course having already done the direct method on one of Joy's courses. I also have wall areas and I think I would have to use the indirect method to cover. I learnt how to use different types of materials and sizes of tile together and also how to make a mosaic on paper initially. I made a 20cm x 20cm wall mosaic of a humming bird. I find Joy an excellent and very patient teacher, and really enjoyed the interaction with other students and the tutor with lots of different materials, everything provided in an airy comfortable work space. We had time to discuss next steps and other courses in mosaic we would enjoy- I do want to continue. I would like to learn more about the design process and working with found objects.

I'm interested in crafts and have always wanted to have a go- I found that you need to have patience but Joy is an excellent teacher and i enjoyed being able to translate one of my own photographs of a puffin into a mosaic design. the course inspired me and I would like now to do another mosaic course using the direct method to make a mosaic with found objects.

I already had some experience of making mosaics but learnt the reverse method for the first time on this course- and learnt all about andamento- flow- in how to lay the tiles. The quality of materials and the tuition on how to plan a mosaic were outstanding, resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I made a mosaic (door number) which I am very proud of- Joy was strict about the technique and is a very knowledgeable and supportive teacher. It was an immersive yet relaxing experience, Joy allows you to make mistakes and then learn how to put them right- so you learn skills that you can use on your own in the future- I would like to lean more about designing a mosaic- what works and what doesn't- I cannot think of many better ways to spend a weekend doing something new, creative, exciting and a great relaxation too.

I really enjoyed my two day mosaic course with Joy. Joy was knowledgable, kind and generous with her sharing of knowledge and experience, as well as her willingness to assist. Although I had worked with mosaic in the direct method, the indirect method was really interesting to learn and a very different approach to the way I was used to working. I highly recommend spending time with Joy making mosaics, it is such a relaxing, therapeutic, and enjoyable way to spend the day.
