About the Course
Two day mosaic course
Mosaic course in the indirect (reverse) method with experienced mosaic artist Joy Sturgess.
On this two day course you will learn the classical indirect (reverse) method of making a mosaic, laying tiles initially on paper upside down using a weak adhesive, and then turning the completed mosaic onto a durable surface. You will make a mosaic which can go outside or indoors. On this course you will learn the following steps:
The indirect method of mosaic making onto paper
How to transform a design idea into a mosaic
How to use mosaic making tools
How to cut and lay mosaic tiles
How to apply basic principles of andamento (movement) to your work.
How to turn your mosaic onto a base with cement based adhesive
Grouting and cleaning your mosaic.
Joy will support you throughout the process, and you will have opportunities to talk about next steps and future projects during the two days.
This course is suitable for mosaic novices or those wishing to extend their practice. You will complete a small mosaic (20cm x 20cm maximum) to take home.
It does not matter if you do not consider yourself 'arty', Joy can help you with any design and drawing required.

I really enjoyed my two day mosaic course with Joy. Joy was knowledgable, kind and generous with her sharing of knowledge and experience, as well as her willingness to assist. Although I had worked with mosaic in the direct method, the indirect method was really interesting to learn and a very different approach to the way I was used to working. I highly recommend spending time with Joy making mosaics, it is such a relaxing, therapeutic, and enjoyable way to spend the day.
