"Power of Place" Mosaic and Tile Making

X

Description

This is an intriguing and innovative new masterclass, conceived and designed especially for the British Association for Modern Mosaic's annual forum in Scarborough (2025), to further explore Rachel Sager's philosophy about The Power of Place. Since it was so popular and sold out very quickly, we've decided to run the day again, this time at our own studios in Stockport. Manchester-based artists Tracey Cartledge and Alison Waters have had their studios in the same building since 2018, providing an opportunity to share their mutual interests through a series of collaborative initiatives, including the annual Mark Making & Mosaics and Collage, Ceramics and Mosaics courses. Alison is well known for her hand-built ceramic works of art, always inspired by her personal connection to place, be it landscape, viaducts, cooling towers, football stadia...even car parks! She regularly exhibits her work at prestigious venues and events throughout the North of England. Tracey has collaborated with many artists, architects, fabricators and communities to design, make and install site-specific works of public art for city centre and rural community spaces over a period of more than 30 years and also works as a restorer of architectural mosaics in heritage settings. During this masterclass, we will explore how to unlock the spiritual, historical and physical characteristics that contribute to The Power of Place. We will use a variety of techniques to create a series of pieces using clay, photography and found objects. You will create items to take away with you and items that will be sent out to you later, including hand-made tiles and direct mosaics made into coloured mortar. Delivered by Tracey Cartledge in collaboration with Alison Waters • Experienced and knowledgeable tutors. • Extensive stock of mosaic materials. • Free on street parking available. • Relaxed and friendly atmosphere. • Opportunity to see other artists & makers' studios at Grit Studios. Tracey is a self-employed artist, specialising in mosaic. She restores architectural mosaics and creates bespoke works of art to commission for both public spaces and private property. In 2014, she restored the mosaic floors of Victoria Station, Manchester, as part of its £44million refurbishment and is currently working on the project for 2 years to restore Manchester Town Hall's mosaic floors with The Mosaic Restoration Company. Tracey plays an active role in community learning: working independently with schools, galleries and museums and with adults at her regular studio workshops.
