The one day lesson lasts for six hours and aims to provide an intensive introduction to this most exciting and challenging of craft disciplines.
Throughout the lesson, you will learn to gather molten glass from the furnace at a temperature exceeding 1100 degrees and manipulate it with a range of traditional glassmaking tools. You will be taught to apply colour and pattern to the clear glass so that by the end of the lesson, you will have produced a number of items from vessels to paper weights of your own design to take home and treasure.
This glassblowing lesson is aimed at complete beginners, so no previous experience is necessary.
Small class sizes - maximum of two students per instructor - so you will get plenty of one-on one instruction.
Please wear sensible, comfortable clothes, preferably layers, so you can remove the outer layer if you get hot; and flat, sturdy shoes. Long hair should be tied back.
Students for glassblowing courses must be over 18 years of age.
Please note that glass vessels and other pieces made during the lesson need to cool slowly in the kiln, so these can be picked up two days later, or alternatively these can be posted for a charge.
We are based in Clavering, Essex - only one hour from London
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All safety equipment and materials are provided.
Complimentary hot and cold drinks will be provided but feel free to bring along drinks, snacks and a packed lunch. Lunch is available at the Lodge nearby.

Last Saturday my wife and I did a full day workshop with Jonathan. We’ve done a lot of different experience/ workshop days and this was the best.
The workshop was clean, spacious and well equipped. Jonathan is a great guy, a very good tutor and he explained things clearly. He started us off with some small technique pieces before moving on to making a paperweight before lunch. In the afternoon we made vases and baubles. We had lots of choice over our designs with a Jonathan guiding us to ensure it was achievable.
Jonathan’s own work is stunning, and to have someone of that standard teaching us was great. The fact that it was just two of us in the class meant the day flowed well.
We’re already thinking we might make a return visit. Worth every penny.
There’s a very good little cafe on site, so our lunch break was a real treat too.
What a fabulous course and wonderful 50th Birthday present for my best friend. We both took part as I simply couldn't resist being left out of the day and gaining an insight into such an intriguing artisan craft. Jonathan is an engaging and highly skilled teacher. Patience is definitely his middle name. His enthusiam and passion for creating beautiful, unique and perfect pieces of glass art is simply contagious - we want to fill our homes with his exquisite pieces! The techniques he showed us were inspiring and only being beginners we were so amazed at the number of pieces we made on the day. Couldn't recommend his classes more highly and can't wait to book our next lesson - if he will have us back of course!
An excellent introduction to glass craft, learnt so much and can’t belive how much we got to create. Jonathan is an excellent teacher and very patient. Fantastic value for money would recommend to everyone, the pieces we made were impressive, I would go again!
I’ve done at least eight days of one-to-one glass courses with Jonathan as well as six four-hour small group classes and I cannot recommend him highly enough as a teacher. He’s patient and friendly and very good indeed at coaxing out the best in students – from beginners upwards. He is extremely generous with his knowledge and with his facilities – which are excellent. It’s also very reassuring to be taught by someone who has had such a thorough grounding in the craft himself and then gone on to achieve truly outstanding work of his own. I will most certainly be doing more courses with Jonathan in the near future.
It’s only when you learn just how many different processes you need to understand to be an expert glassblower that you realise just how patient JONATHAN is as a teacher - and how proud you’ll be of the wobbly treasures you create and then even more so of your later creations.
I learnt a lot, laughed a lot and am determined to go back to have another go.
Great for anyone who wants to learn a new skill, find out lots about the art and the science of glassblowing and play safely outside their comfort zone with an expert teacher who doesn’t make you feel like an idiot.
A fantastic experience! Jonathan was an excellent teacher, clearly explaining & demonstrating the art of blowing glass as well as assisting us in our attempts. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would highly recommend this course to anyone with a fascination with glass. Thank you, I shall treasure all my creations from the day!
I took my Dad here for a days glassblowing as a birthday present. Jonathan was an excellent teacher, very encouraging and patient. We were amazed how many things we made in just one day (with no breakages).
This was honestly one of the best days I've ever had! Jonathan made me feel totally relaxed and confident. He is an incredibly talented and genuine man. I can't wait to go back and see more of his work and hopefully make more of my own glass work. Thank you again!!
Fantastic day, so much fun and learnt a lot of techniques.
