Weekly jewellery making classes run term time on a rolling basis in 8 week blocks. We currently have classes on a Monday Afternoon and Evening, Tuesday Evenings, Thursday Morning, Afternoon and Evening.
We offer a spacious, well equipped new studio space at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet - a museum heritage site on the outskirts of Sheffield. Classes are a perfect way to begin or continue learning and enjoying making pieces of jewellery. We welcome beginners as well as students with previous experience of jewellery making also.
The rolling 8 week courses allow students to develop their own projects with support and guidance from their tutor. You will be introduced to the workshop, all the tools and equipment and health and safety. You will learn how to texture, heat, hammer, stamp, saw pierce, solder, anneal, form and polish metal. New techniques are demonstrated in these sessions, with the opportunity to focus on a particular technique such as stone setting, wirework and forming in more detail alongside developing greater skill and confidence in soldering, polishing and finishing techniques. Students attending the weekly classes will be of mixed ability, working on a range of individual projects; this is a great way to share ideas with each other in the class.
Other areas that are discussed in the weekly classes include making your own findings and how to finish off your pieces of work, jewellery designing to create your own collections and pricing your work for selling.
Students work on a range of projects and make individual pieces of work including, earrings, rings, cufflinks, bangles and pendants. Some students also make their own pieces of work for special occasions including wedding jewellery and hair accessories. You will take home a number of pieces of jewellery over the 8 weeks.
Jules is a fully qualified teacher and designer with more than 18 years teaching experience.
8 week evening and daytime classes run termly in September, January and April.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
The cost of the workshop is £130/£160 per person which covers some basic materials and sundries such as silver solder and saw blades. Silver can be purchased in addition if you would like to work in silver but this is not essential - typically a silver ring costs around £3-£6.

An excellent course, safe to say I'll be continuing! Jules and Melissa are both excellent teachers, both are very knowledgeable and supportive. The facilities are great with all the tools and equipment needed to create some lovely jewellery.
Jules is a great teacher and always has time for the people in the class who are all at different stages and with mixed abilities. The class is a friendly and encouraging environment - I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn new skills or just to expand their own repertoire of jewellery making.
The studio is well equipped with everything you need, spacious and always warm and welcoming. Following the introductory course which is taught and covers basic silversmithing techniques to get you started you can then attend 8 week terms. There is always plenty of excellent supervision and advice from very experienced teachers. The class sizes are small, the atmosphere is relaxed with enthusiasm and support in abundance. I look forward to my Monday evenings and Jules and Melissa won't be getting rid of me any time soon!
I chanced upon Studio Budgie Galore at 'Art in the Gardens', the Botanical Gardens in Sheffield. I loved the idea of the items it was possible to make and signed up for a Taster course, which amounted to 8 hours. This finished just before Christmas and was brilliant! Not only did I make a silver ring, but also some earrings that I was able to give as presents. Since then I have continued to attend weekly sessions and continue to learn new techniques. I have been asked to make things for friends, which is a lovely thing to do, as it means they like what I'm doing. Highly recommended.
I love my Thursday evenings spent at jewellery! It is completely absorbing and provides the perfect escape from a busy day at work. You are always supported and encourage, with real experts on hand to assist you if needed!
I really look forward to my Thursday afternoon jewellery classes and we have all become good friends. I have made some lovely items which have impressed my friends and family. I enjoy the designing as well as the making and Julie-Ann is always there to help me turn my ideas into a reality.
I started the evening courses here a year ago and I have loved it. My skills are developing in leaps and bounds. It's a really supportive, encouraging and relaxed environment where I have been able to develop my skills in a well resourced and accessible workshop. I recommend this course.
Tuesday evenings are the highlights of my week. I have been coming to Julie Ann's classes for a year now and have learnt so much. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and Julie Ann is a great teacher. The workshop is very well equipped. I can highly recommend the courses.
I just love Jules courses. I'm about to start my third and have learned so much. It's very absorbing and the group is friendly and helpful. It's just delightful and I am amazed at the beautiful things I have made already.
This is a fantastic course. The quality of teaching is excellent and the tutors are very friendly and approachable. The workshop is very well equipped and the class sizes work well. I look forward to attending every week!
Very well equipped studio, with knowledgeable tutor , able to tune in to whatever level you are at with a particular idea, technique. Excellent value for money. Classes are never overcrowded, and are friendly. Couldn't be better really!
I cannot rave about this course enough, definitely the best thing on offer in Sheffield. I've been attending for just over a year now and learnt so many new skills, met lovely helpful friendly people and found a hobby I am in love with. I suggest this course to everyone I meet and talk about jewellery with. If you're thinking about doing it, then my advice is just get it booked and do it, I wish I had sooner
It’s a fantastic course-I have now been on four lots of sessions at Studio Budgie Galore and hope to keep going. The first introductory session introduced all of the techniques and now the ongoing classes enable me to be more creative making lots of different pieces under the supervision of Melissa and Jules. Would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of giving this a try.
If (when)you book a course here you will get a very well equipped, well set out and organised environment to work in and a friendly and creative teacher. It can be daunting going to a course or workshop, especially if you've never done anything like it before! But Julie Ann is well able to work with people with different levels of confidence and experience and offer encouragement and of course expertise. There is also a good selection of books to help with ideas, interesting displays and objects to look at and be inspired by....oh and tea and coffee !
Julie Ann is a fantastic teacher. I have been going to the studio since it started nearly 16 months ago. I'm not a creative person or even very arty but Julie Ann brings out the best in all her students. She is very patient and treats everyone as an individual and always makes time for each one of her pupils. The studio itself is extremely well equipped and in lovely surroundings at The Hamlet. I will be continuing with Julie Anns Jewellery course indefinitely. Thanks Julia Ann for my wonderful new hobby
Julie Ann is a friendly and supportive teacher who is able to manage her time effectively across a class of different capabilities. Class members learn a new technique each week and are advised on how best to use her tools and get the desired outcome. Julie Ann encourages the class to be creative and openly celebrates each class members jewellery pieces; creating a warm and welcoming environment for all that take part.
