Jinks McGrath has been making jewellery for 40 years, teaching in the UK and abroad for 25 years and is the author of 7 renowned jewellery technique books - widely used in training colleges.
Suitable for all abilities – whether jewellery is a new interest, you’re looking to learn a new technique or wanting to brush up on an old one - everyone is welcome.
For beginners we start with basic silver-smithing techniques like measuring, piercing, soldering, filing and polishing. For more advanced students techniques such as stone setting, surface finishes, etching, enamelling techniques, reticulation and lathe work can be pursued at a pace to suit the student.
A delicious home-made lunch is included every day of the course. Each course day runs from 10am to 5pm.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 8 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
The course breaks at 1pm for a delicious homemade lunch around the big table in the Barn. Coffee, teas and biscuits are also available in the workshop.
The workshop is fully equipped for students, with most tools and machinery imaginable. You are welcome to bring your own tools if you want but this is not necessary!
If required Jinks can supply for your course, at trade cost, silver and some semi-precious stones… all you really need to bring is an apron and an idea of what you’d like to make or what you’d like to learn!

I have attended Jinks' 5 days summer jewellery course for several years. The description of her course on her site is absolutely accurate. The number of students in the course is ideal for each person to get the personal tuition that you would expect, the workshop is very well equipped to pursue any chosen project, the environment is extremely beautiful, the food prepared and cooked by Jinks is wonderful plus the various hot drinks provided each day BUT this course is so much more ... To me these 5 days are a breath of fresh air, sunshine and laughter and I leave feeling full of joy, energy and impatient to do so much more. Jinks is a very good teacher as she not only imparts knowledge with great generosity but also manages to bring her unique energy which always make me want to come back.
I would not hesitate to recommend her courses very highly, but no one is taking my place for next year or the year after. Sorry...Booked. Dominique
I have now taken four terms of these evening classes and have enrolled for the next one: I've learnt so much and have really enjoyed it. I would highly recommend both Jinks and Sam for their knowledge and teaching and second the praise given in other reviews. Additionally the atmosphere is always welcoming and encouraging, not just from the tutors but also the other learners. As an added bonus there's coffee, herbal teas and biscuits and the artistic setting in the South Downs is stunning.
Having attended a number of Jinks' short courses I am totally addicted. She is so patient, knowledgeable and encouraging. You learn all sorts of techniques without really realising and I have never heard her say anything is too difficult too do. It doesn't matter what level you are you will always come away with something you are really pleased with. She makes it all so very enjoyable. I look forward to the courses so much. I have made things that I never thought I would be able to do. Because of the small number of students on the courses you get plenty of time to ask questions and get to really understand how to do things. The setting is fabulous and on top of that she serves up the most delicious lunches in her fairy tale barn.
I've returned to Jinks McGrath's studio for Jewellery workshops many times over the last 15 years. My last one was in July 2016 when I did a 3-day course. She limits the courses to 5 students (so book early as they fill up fast) which means you get a lot of direct teaching support. Jinks is not only a highly skilled jeweller but she also is very experienced at teaching. She sets the perfect balance between expertly guiding you in how to do something at the same time as ensuring that she doesn't take over and you learn how to do it. Her studio is in a truly idyllic setting and you get access to all the tools and materials you need. She also throws in a delicious light lunch each day. It's the perfect way to spend a weekend.
