Course Start DatesSunday 8th March 2020
About the Course
Mosaic course with award winning mosaic artist with 25 years experience, Kate Rattray. The course is suitable for beginners and students who have some experience. We use glass and ceramic mosaic tiles and stained glass.
For beginners: make a coaster and a small mosaic picture for indoors using the direct method.
For students with some experience: make a small picture or several smaller pictures paying attention to shape of tile, andamento (directional flow of the tiles) and colour and tone.
Please note: Everyone works at a different pace so it is possible you will not finish your mosaic at the class. However you will be given instructions and all materials you need to finish your mosaic at home.
What to bring:
Please bring an apron or wear old clothes. Sketches you have made or ideas for simple designs and a packed lunch. (Tea coffee and biscuits are included)
The course is held in Kate’s studio in the lovely Mendip village of Chewton Mendip, which is 7 miles from Wells and 15 miles from Bath.
Where to stay:
There are some luxury cottages in and around Chewton Mendip, and plenty of accommodation in Wells or Bath.
Wells is England’s smallest city. It’s historic centre boasts a beautiful cathedral and the Bishops Palace. You can also visit the famous ‘dragon mosaic’ along moat walk built by Kate and local schools to tell the legend of the Worminster Dragon.
Bath is a beautiful old city with Roman Baths and an Abbey. Worth exploring.

I had some experience making mosaics, but I still learned a lot from Kate. She allowed us to work at our own pace and gave great advice on design and also what was possible in the time given. I picked up a lot of great tips, and I would definitely attend one of Kate's courses again!

The sculpture mosaic course was relaxed and enjoyable, as are all Kate's courses. It was explained clearly how to use the materials we hadn’t used before and then over the two days Kate was very attentive to us all but gave us plenty of time to work at our own pace, which I think is the best kind of learning. The group were pleasant and I enjoyed seeing everyone's pieces develop with our different styles.

I have done several courses with Kate, and they have all been excellent. I started as a complete beginner, and she explained things in a simple and straightforward manner, sending me home with a mosaic picture to hang on my wall. Since then I have done several more courses, learning different techniques, and each time I left with something to be proud of. The classes are generally small in number, which means she is able to give one-to-one attention as required, but will leave us to our own devices if that is what we prefer. A lovely lady who knows her craft, and she is generous with tea, coffee and biscuits! Definitely recommended.

I enjoyed this one-day beginners' course a lot. All equipment and materials needed were there, and we had all the time we needed to finish two pieces, whcih was a surprise. Kate gave good advice one-to-one, and sent follow-up notes.

Response from Kate Rattray Mosaic Artist:Thank you Kate for your good review. Best wishes, Kate
Kate's courses are an excellent way to get you started with mosaicing. In a relaxed environment she gives an introduction to techniques before letting you get really hands on with the materials. Tips and advice was given throughout and Kate's always willing to answer questions. She also provides summary notes to reference at home. Ive really enjoyed the 2 courses I've attended and these have both given me the confidence to continue mosaicing at home.
