About the Course
Come and have a go at the art of paper marbling. It's addictive and meditative all at the same time!
In this one day workshop you will produce a stack of beautiful papers to take home with you.
TPlease get in touch for future workshop dates.
This is a beginners introductory course to Ebru paper marbling. This is the traditional Turkish technique for marbling that floats paints on a solution of carrageenan size.
Over the course of the day we will experiment with colours, techniques and patterns. And you will learn about the materials and equipment needed so that you can start marbling at home.
The size will be pre-mixed and ready for the class but we will run though how to make this. We will learn how to mix the paints, how to apply them to the bath, how to treat the paper, what paper to use, how to make a print and a selection of traditional combing patterns. There is also time for you to free style!
This is a relaxed and fun class. You needn't have any artistic background just enthusiasm to have a go.
All materials will be provided along with a handout that covers everything we will learn over the course of the day.
The day will run from 10 - 4, and we will break at 12.30 for some lunch.
It is advisable to travel by train if coming from outside of Brighton as the nearest free parking is some distance away.
Cross Street Workshop is around a 20 minute walk from the Brighton train station.
Hannah Futers is a freelance designer/maker primarily working with textiles. Having studied textiles at Goldsmiths and print at London Met, she came across marbling a few years back and has been hooked ever since. On learning that this craft has been classified as endangered by the Heritage Craft Association she decided to start running workshops to share her knowledge and do her bit at keeping this beautiful craft alive!
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All materials are included.
Please be sure to wear old clothes and shoes as marbling can get messy! The paints used are water-based but best to wear something you don't mind getting paint splatters on.
Please bring along a packed lunch or alternatively you can pop out to one of the near-by supermarkets. We are located just behind western road so there is plenty of choice.
Course dates are flexible; please get in touch for the next available date.
