Indian block printing is a traditional craft still in use today to produce beautiful fabrics. Join me for a day of printing exploration using hand-carved Indian wood blocks, some collected on travels in India, some old, some new but all wonderful to use.
We will start with me sharing some images, fabrics and prints of India, I will explain the process of hand carving these blocks, which are carved by skilled craftsmen, mainly in the area around Jaipur and the different ways the blocks are used in Rajasthan and Gujarat. I will demonstrate the technique of applying textile paint and explain how to produce a good image on different surfaces, how to combine colours and designs and how to create repeat patterns.
You will then print tissue, papers and card using a variety of blocks, these papers are perfect for wrapping paper, gift tags and cards, you will be encouraged to try different colours, experiment with repeat patterns and combine designs to achieve a unique print.
In the afternoon we will look at the different designs and you will choose your favourite blocks to work with to print fabric, starting with calico, then choosing a tea towel, napkins or cotton bag. Linen fabric will be available to buy if you would like to print pieces suitable to make a cushion or bag.
