Join us for our Art in the Barn Creative Arts Week and explore gel plate printing. This is a lively and instant method to create monoprints, with the advantage that it doesn’t require the use of a printing press. Each print is unique and this highly adaptable process invites experimentation.
Gel printing plates look and feel like gelatin, but are durable, reusable and store at room temperature; they come in a range of sizes and shapes are easy to clean with mild soap and water or baby wipes and are always ready for printing. They are used in conjunction with acrylic paints and need no more equipment than a roller to apply the paint.
This course will be held in the Long Barn at Meon Springs which is a light and spacious venue, allowing you to be socially distanced from the other participants, with your own work space and equipment.
Designer Alison Butler and artist Liz Wellby will guide you through a range of gel plate techniques including layering, impressing, creating stencils and exploring masking techniques with leaves and flowers. You will leave with a range of monoprints that can be seen as outcomes in their own right or can be starting points for further processes, such as paintings or a lino cut. They can also be used to collage and create cards, gift tags or used in creative journals and sketch pads.
This workshop will suit the creative beginner or those with some experience of different creative processes and techniques.
In light of the COVID19 situation, appropriate cleaning will have taken place prior to each workshop and additional cleaning will be carried out during the day. Social distancing measures will be in place, including providing individual work places, materials and equipment. Face coverings/masks will need to be worn for limited times during the day.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
The workshop runs from 10 - 4 pm, most materials and equipment * will be provided. Drinks and refreshments will be served throughout the day; just bring your lunch.
* Please bring along your own Gelli plate; 6 x 6 inch, 5 x 7 inch or 8 x 10 inch plate. They can be purchased online or please contact Alison for details.

The GELLI plate printing workshop with Liz and Alison, both professional artists, was absolutely top notch. Meticulously organised, in a delightful Hampshire countryside setting.
There was plenty of space, copious refreshments and plenty of gentle encouragement, suggestions and individual attention when needed. The GELLI Plate is a fun and accessible medium and I came away with loads of prints, and a HUGE smile. Highly recommended.

This is the fourth course I have been on at Art in the Barn and as usual I was not disappointed - it was excellent! Lots of fun, creativity and I’ve come back with lots of prints! The setting is beautiful, there are lots of materials and the course works for all levels and abilities, I can’t recommend them highly enough!
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Hi Jeni,
This was an excellent session. It was very clear that our teacher, Liz Wellby has come from a teaching background. Everything was extremely well organised and she stretched everyone to achieve their best, whether they were complete novices or experienced artists. A thoroughly enjoyable day in which I achieved lots of exciting work and I can’t wait to develop the skills I have learnt further. Thanks Liz.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Susie,
What a lovely day at the barn. Very well organised with hands on (socially distanced of course) instruction , encouragement and advice. The structure was well planned and we were supplied with everything we needed. I forgot my acrylic paint and was able to use theirs which was helpful.
We all went away at the end of the day with a huge amount of prints that we had created.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Annabel,
A totally wonderful day! Excellent and kind tuition, with endless patience. Good advice and suggestions without saying "do it this way."
Lovely setting as well and as soon as you arrive you can't help but feel a sense of well being.
Thank you so much.
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Mary,
The gel printing workshop was great fun and very intensive. We learned how to print and mask print also how to make stencils. It was all very interesting and useful for me. Liz and Alison are very friendly and helpful. They make sure that everyone is happy and has when they need. They guide you if it’s needed and serve hot drinks and chocolate biscuits to keep you going. What more could you want!
Response from Blooming Designs - Art in the Barn:Dear Oenone,
I really can't rate this workshop highly enough. Alison and Liz show you how to make beautiful pictures; everyone can do it. And - it felt like there was no limit on how many I could make. Well, that makes the workshop incredibly good value. I think part of the reason my expectations were exceeded was because sometimes I do a workshop run by someone who knows a couple of things and makes a business out of it - you know hen parties and the like. I think for 'Hampshire' I read 'sticks' and didn't expect much. But this is not what Liz and Alison provide. They are actual artists and they guide you through an artistic experience. I love coming into contact with this kind of professional. There was loads of room - I don't know if that was Coivd related but I wasn't squeezed in with people, we all had space. I came home with a portfolio stuffed with images, at least two of which I will frame for the wall and a head jammed with excitement at the prospect of doing more this weekend. Thank you so much.
