Description

Next promoted date : Thursday 23rd May Join us in the beautiful Meon Valley, Hampshire, for a day of mono printing using gel plates. Gel printing plates are a lively and instant method for creating monoprints, with the advantage that they don’t require the use of a printing press. Each print is unique and this highly adaptable process invites experimentation. Gel printing plates look and feel like gelatin, but are durable, reusable and store at room temperature; they come in a range of sizes and shapes, are easy to clean with mild soap and water or baby wipes and are always ready for printing. They are used in conjunction with acrylic paints and need no more equipment than a roller to apply the paint. You will be guided through a range of gel plate techniques including layering, impressing, creating stencils and exploring masking techniques with leaves and flowers, leaving with a range of monoprints that can be seen as outcomes in their own right or can be starting points for further processes, such as paintings or a lino cut. Your images can also be collaged and used to create cards, gift tags or used in creative journals and sketch pads. This workshop will suit the creative beginner or those with some experience of different creative processes and techniques. The more experienced gel plate user will also find lots of opportunities to develop and enhance their skills. Please bring along your own Gelli Plate; 6 x 6 inch, 5 x 7 inch and 8 x 10 inch plates can be purchased from handprinted.com. The workshop will be delivered by Alison Butler; Alison has over 25 years of experience as a textile designer and book illustrator and loves exploring colour in her work. We have a choice of 2 venues on our working farm in The South Downs National Park; The Stables provides a more intimate venue, whilst the adjacent thatched Long Barn will suit a larger group.

"Great course - the second I have done with Alison and Liz. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but there is plenty of scope for exploring different techniques with completely differing results. On the day of the course you are introduced to several different techniques - with lots of experimenting as a result. "My friend and I arrived on an incredibly wet and windy Saturday into the warm and inviting stable block. We were lucky enough to be part of a very small group so we had lots of expert attention from Alison. She guided us through the process in an easy to understand way and as a complete beginner I was thankful the pace was slow. Once you start making your prints you are completely hooked, every print is a magical discovery and once you start using layers the excitement builds. I came away with 50 prints and I have so many more ideas just waiting to be explored. Alison guides you throughout and is equally enthusiastic about all art produced. We just used one 6x6 gel plate for this course and Alison had a big bucket of paints to borrow but we also took some of our own. Hot drinks were offered frequently and we had the best homemade brownies ever! This course is suitable for literally anyone and is so much fun the hours just shot by. You are given a goodie bag with most importantly well written instructions. I cannot wait to see where my next session of gel printing takes me. Thank you Alison, you may have guessed by now that I loved it. :)"

"What a lovely day at the barn. Very well organised with hands on (socially distanced of course) instruction , encouragement and advice. The structure was well planned and we were supplied with everything we needed. I forgot my acrylic paint and was able to use theirs which was helpful. We all went away at the end of the day with a huge amount of prints that we had created."

"I really can't rate this workshop highly enough. Alison and Liz show you how to make beautiful pictures; everyone can do it. And - it felt like there was no limit on how many I could make. Well, that makes the workshop incredibly good value. I think part of the reason my expectations were exceeded was because sometimes I do a workshop run by someone who knows a couple of things and makes a business out of it - you know hen parties and the like. I think for 'Hampshire' I read 'sticks' and didn't expect much. But this is not what Liz and Alison provide. They are actual artists and they guide you through an artistic experience. I love coming into contact with this kind of professional. There was loads of room - I don't know if that was Coivd related but I wasn't squeezed in with people, we all had space. I came home with a portfolio stuffed with images, at least two of which I will frame for the wall and a head jammed with excitement at the prospect of doing more this weekend. Thank you so much."
