Making furniture from unseasoned ‘green’ wood is pure pleasure – when a well honed blade slices effortlessly through a lovely fresh piece of ash, there’s nothing quite like it.
This course is an introduction to the craft of making furniture using traditional green woodworking tools and techniques. You’ll learn how to use tools such as the axe, drawknife and spokeshave to shape wood into a variety of components. You’ll also be introduced to the magic of turning wood on a foot-powered treadle lathe, a piece of equipment that has been in use for centuries.
Over the six weeks of the course you’ll put your new skills towards creating a beautiful piece of green-wood furniture, such as a three-legged back-stool or simple side table.
The course is run a fun, relaxed environment in the Stoney Lane Studios, a working community of artists and craftspeople in the bustling Crystal Palace area of south London. It's a great steppingstone to my more advanced chair-making courses, which I run in London and Wales. See my homepage on Craft Courses for further details on these.
