Learn woodturning in the peaceful setting of our workshop located in the cottage garden of our home on the Cambs/Norfolk border.
Classes are one to one so you will have an immersive experience with the full attention of the tutor. There will be no other students in the workshop.
You'll learn how to make a number of items that you'll be able to take away with you at the end of the day. The day can also be tailored to meet the requirements of those who are relatively new to woodturning and wish to gain some more insight. During this private tuition, complete beginners will learn how to mount a piece of wood on the lathe; how to cut and shape the wood using gouges and other woodturning tools, and then how to finish the wood afterwards.
The morning tends to be spent learning about spindle turning, and then after lunch the focus is usually on bowl turning, with students turning a lovely bowl to take home with them.
We also offer this workshop now for 2 people (check out the "Beginners 1-day 1-2-1 woodturning workshop for 2 people" course). So couples or even parents and children can come along and experience the art of woodturning together!
About a week before your workshop date, we'll e-mail you again with more details about parking etc.
We also offer accommodation in the form of our Crafter's Retreat cabin or we can advise of other local B&Bs.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, and a light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch is also included. Depending on the weather/time of year, lunch can be taken either out in the cottage garden or in our country kitchen which has a view over the garden.
The sessions are hands-on, and the student will be able to use the lathe to create their pieces. The tuition can be tuned to what they would like to do, as people tend to learn quicker working in areas that they are interested in. They may wish to make a candlestick or perhaps a bowl – they can choose from a number of items that would be suitable for beginners or those relatively new to the art. The aim is to make an item or items that they can feel proud of and take away with them. All students will be provided with a certificate of completion. All of the wood used is from sustainable local sources.
The 1-day workshop includes:
- All tools, materials and personal protection equipment (eye protection/lung protection).
- Smocks and old shirts, but the student may wish to bring their own. If they already have some woodturning tools, they could bring these along too if they wish.
- Refreshments (tea/coffee/soft drinks) and a light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch.
- One-to-one tuition / private tuition ensuring the student gets the maximum benefit from the day with no distractions.
- All work can be taken home.
- Certificate of completion.
- Detailed course notes for those who wish to pursue the craft.
- Follow-up advice.
1 day (flexible times to suit)

Although I'm not strictly a raw beginner, I found Simon's guidance and patience hugely helpful in my 'new' journey to 'unlearn' some poor practices and start to grow in this hobby. It is always a joy to work with an expert and the 1-to-1 setting was the best possible way allow a free flow of conversation and for me to get the most out of the day.
Thanks to Louise and Simon for making me feel so welcome at their lovely home and workshops and for the excellent lunch we enjoyed in the impressive garden.
There were also a lot of incidental tips that arose - such as the way Simon has arranged his workspace to accommodate machinery and people and to provide a safe and clean environment with powerful dust extraction and to the way his various tools are stored and easily located. It's made me want to rethink my own space radically.
Overall, a great day that I cannot recommend highly enough.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi James,Malcolm had a wonderful day using his birthday gift. The course was very friendly, a well organised and knowledgeable day. Had lovely lunch and enjoyed the experience and knowledge he had from a very welcoming Simon and learnt lots to look forward to on his retirement days ahead to make some more goods. The bowl and honey stick were great.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Wendy,Thank you Simon. Very clear, calm, and professional instruction and demonstrations. My first time woodturning since I did woodwork at school some 45 years ago - and I loved it. The voucher was a great present, and I am proud to show off what I made.
I will take you up on your offer of further advice as this becomes a hobby in my retirement.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Jonathan,Very happy with the day I spent on my first try at woodturning. Simon ran the day at a pace that was just right for me and we talked about all sorts of things that will be helpful when I take the next plunge which will be a lathe of my own. Oh, and tidying my workshop after being put to shame by Simon's immaculate space. Looking forward to my second day of turning with Simon when I hope I'll be able to try some more new things.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Jon,Had a very enjoyable experience, found lots of things very useful. Would recommend it to anyone who is interested in woodcraft.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi David,The perfect course for me, I came away with all the knowledge necessary for me to develop my wood turning skills.
A really good understanding of the machinery and tools.
Simon explained and demonstrated everything with great clarity which made it easy to understand.
Many thanks Simon definitely a 5 star experience.

Hi Kevin,The course with Simon was a birthday treat from my husband. The day slipped by quickly as Simon guided me through the course. Simon is a very good humoured and exceptionally knowledgeable teacher who is very patient and encouraging. A thoroughly enjoyable day that has left me pondering whether this craft is something I want to explore further.
Many thanks for the lovely lunch Louise provided
Throughly recommend the day.

Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Paul,First time wood turning since I was at school 50 years ago, really enjoyed my day, great venue one on one tuition, very pleasant people, Simon really knows his stuff. I am seriously looking at woodturning as a hobby for my retirement, highly recommend this training venue.
Response from Blended Monkey:

Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Debbie,Really great day with Simon, he made the day relaxing, educational, informative and inspirational, great facilities I have total workshop envy now !
Response from Blended Monkey:
Thanks, Edd! Should motivate you to get in the shed and do a tidy-up :)This was a gift for my hubby, something new to try. He really enjoyed the day, finding Simon very patient and supportive throughout and was very pleased with the pieces he came away with. He was amazed at how therapeutic he found it too. Lovely lunch provided by Louise. He said he would highly recommend the experience to anyone.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Josie,Very interesting and informative day spent with Simon learning some of the basics of wood turning. I'm completely new to this but after only one day I think I'm already hooked- thanks to Simon for being very patient! It's great to be able to focus entirely on one thing- the piece of wood spinning round in front of you so is excellent mindfulness training!! I even managed to produce a couple of pieces to take home! Highly recommended- I'll be back!!!!!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Jeff,I was given by my wife as a Christmas present, a one day course in wood turning from Blended Monkey. It is always difficult for her to know what to get me and, with my abilities to be practical she thought it would be a good idea. Well she wasn't wrong, I loved it! I had no preconceived ideas about how the process worked other than I knew roughly what was made on a lathe, this in mind I couldn't wait for the day to arrive.
Once I had booked a day for the course, I was kept well informed about what would happen on the day and assured that COVID guidelines were in place, should I have concerns. I was warmly welcomed by hosts Louise and Simon on my arrival and taken to the wood turning room and offered a drink with biscuits, the first of many through the day.
Simon then went onto talk about health and safety and the equipment we would be using and told me not to worry about remembering everything, as detailed notes would be emailed to me the next day, The notes incidentally were very in-depth and repeated in print, the whole day which is and will be a great help going forward. We started on the basics and by the end of the morning I had produced a honey drizzler which, I don't mind saying without being big headed, was amazing for a first attempt.
Lunch followed and here, I have to say a big thank you to Louise who, after being made aware of my dietary preferences beforehand, this being plant based, served up a lovey platter of sweet and savory offerings.
Onto the afternoon and Simon went on to explain the next project which was a bowl made out of cherry wood. Again The process was explained and by the end I had produced a lovely bowl which again, I am really proud of and looks beautiful.
I am hopefully going to retire in a couple of years and am seriously thinking about investing in the equipment to give me a great and totally enjoyable pastime when the great day finally arrives.
To finish, I would thoroughly recommend this course with Blended Monkey, you will not be disappointed.
Many thanks to you both. :-)
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Chris,I had an amazing day and although I am not the best at being a student, I was made to feel relaxed from the moment I met Simon and Louise. The day then got going and didn’t stop. It was the escapism I needed for a day and I learnt lots too. Now I just need to remember it and practice!! Thanks again for your patience and for the much needed caffeine and lunch.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Really glad you enjoyed the day, Hayley. We hope the notes will help you remember what you did - please get in touch if you need further assistance. It was a great woodturning course that encompassed everything and more. Simon is a patient teacher and thoroughly understands his craft in detail. The day was very relaxed with coffee and lunch provided by Louise.
I made a honey wand a bowl out of a really nice piece of wood. I enjoyed learning about the finishing products and process.
The next day I turned 2 bowls at home thanks to Simons tuition. I would highly recommend Simon (Blended Monkey) to anyone wishing to get off to a god start in Woodturning. I’ll be back!!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Kevan,I've been trying my hand at wood turning (with a small amount of prior knowledge) through lock down! Simon's course was just what I wanted. He took me though all the basic principles and then slowly taught me the basic cuts for spindle work and for bowl turning with lots of hands on practice and careful guidance. I came away exhausted but very satisfied. More importantly I came away with a MUCH better understanding of what I was trying to do and how to do it safely. A great day. I learnt so much and had a lovely lunch to boot! Thank you Simon and Louise.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Jeff,There are already so many nice words for this course and Simon and I can only agree and confirm.
It was a very nice 3 hours course I had with Simon and because we had a nice chat about the world.
We had to make it even a bit longer so I can take my own Honey spoon home with me (that I am now showing proud to any visitor coming for brunch).
Simon is a great teacher, with passion for what he is doing that makes sure to give each person the best learning exciting fitting their individual needs.
I can recommend this course to anyone that want to get to the next level with his Woodturning skills or if you just want to find out if woodturning is something for you.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Sebastian,This was purchased as a Christmas gift for me from my Wife! Simon and Louise greeted me and made me feel very welcome! Thoroughly enjoyable day! Simon is very professional and patient, I made some fabulous pieces and had a lovely lunch. I will be retuning for further courses with Simon! I would highly recommend
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Colin,I really enjoyed learning the basics of woodturning with Simon! Great instruction and friendly chat with it. I was very proud of the pieces I made on the day with Simon's help. Woodturning is very satisfying, with a real zen quality about it once you get in the zone. It is definitely something that would be hard to learn from a book or videos as it was all about feel, and small changes to angles. However, with an expert helping guide me by showing me the exact movements the tools needed it felt like I made really good progress in just one day. (I'm sure I'm no woodturning prodigy; Simon is just nice)
Lunch was great - way better than expected. I'd imagined something basic so I was delighted by a delicious spread.
One note: I went in January and it was very cold. I was very glad of a full set of thermals I had chucked in the car at the last minute which I popped on half way through, so if you are going in the bleak midwinter then do dress warm!
Overall a great day, highly recommended.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Rob,This was my first woodturning experience since my school days 50 years ago and I really enjoyed my day with Simon. His enthusiasm, experience and knowledge was invaluable and I am now looking to purchase my own lathe and tools.
As well as detailed instruction on various techniques, Simon also spent time explaining how to select and sharpen the tools, dust extraction and safety equipment.
I was delighted with the bowl and decoration that I made, and my family and friends also seemed impressed.
My wife attended the pottery course with Louise on the same day and they both made us feel very welcome, including an enjoyable lunch.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Barry,I would unreservedly recommend this course. Simon is both friendly and informative and no question is too stupid to ask. His workshop is well equipped and the programme was just right for me as a beginner (well, actually I had already turned one bowl, but that was 45 years ago at school!).
There is ample opportunity to both practise and ask questions and I was delighted with the things that Simon helped me to produce.
It was a day where I barely noticed the passage of time as I was fully engrossed for the whole workshop.
I discovered there is much more to wood turning than I realised, but was also convinced that all of it is possible.
Response from Blended Monkey:
David,A day to be enjoyed by novices and those with experience alike. Simon is an excellent tutor. He obviously has lots of experience and knowledge and a very good way of imparting it. The workshop, machinery, tools and hospitality first class.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Paul,I’ve always loved working with wood but never got around to woodturning. My wife bought me this course as a Birthday present and It has to be one of the best presents she has ever bought me. Simon and Louise are friendly and welcoming hosts. Simon is extremely knowledgeable but also has the knack of passing that knowledge on to beginners like me. His facilities are enviable with a large selection of tools and also health and safety facilities like dust extractions. On top of that, he is just good company.
I’m sure I will be back in future for an intermediates’ course if he runs one.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Geoff, thank you for a glowing review! Really enjoyed the day with you too; watch this space, an intermediate course should be available soon…It was a wonderful day at Blended Monkey. I was made to feel very welcome and the tutor, Simon, was excellent and put me at ease immediately.
I would whole heartedly recommend this to anyone who may be interested.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Tony,Although I had over a few years been 'playing around' with a wood lathe I’d never felt confident in what I was doing. Having looked at many YouTube videos on the subject I decided I needed some one to one tuition and the Blended Monkey site seemed to offer exactly what I was looking for. In fact the day turned out to be that and more. From start to finish it was an experience I won’t forget.
Simon explained and demonstrated each step, then used a guiding hand to allow you to experience the correct way of using the gouges. He then allowed you to continue on your own but was always there when you needed any help. I now feel much more confident, knowing the correct way to hold and use the gouges. Having the notes Simon supplied will be very useful and something I’m sure I will use quite frequently.
I would say to anyone thinking that wood turning might be for you Simon’s course is an absolute must.
Thank you Simon for a really great day.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi David,I'm thinking of getting into wood-turning but had no background or experience beyond some basic woodworking, so booked this one-day 1-1 course to give it a go.
Simon is an excellent teacher. I felt I learnt a great deal (which I still remember!) and got to try a variety of techniques. The time just flew by, it was 5 pm before I knew it! It's a nice location and the workshop/facilities are great. The lunch was lovely too. Went away with a nice bowl. Highly recommended.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Jason,Have wanted to try woodturning for a while and my partner bought me this course as a present.
I had an amazing time learning how to turn with Simon, he is an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable & helpful.
Had a lovely day there and would recommend it to absolutely everyone that wants to try this craft!
10/10
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi George,This was one of the few courses, I have been on a few, I found it to be brilliant. I had a great couple of days, learnt masses, thoroughly enjoying every minute. The instructions were very clear and my development in lathe turning has as a result improved. I am also more confident in my approach to doing something new. Simon and Louise were both very accommodating and provided a lovely lunch. This is a course I would not hesitate in advising any lathe enthusiast to do.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Marco,After a 2 hour journey, I received an extremely warm welcome on arrival, followed by a much-needed coffee and an explanation of how the day was planned.
Both the morning and afternoon sessions were very constructive and informative. Simon soon has you hands-on on the lathe, resulting in producing a "Christmas Tree" in the morning and a Bowl in the afternoon.
Simon's workshop is very well equipped and his explanation of his various pieces of equipment was most thorough.
The communication from both Simon and Louise, before the course and after, was informative and timely.
I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to learn woodturning.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Malcolm,A great day! Simon was a brilliant instructor - patient, giving me lots of time to practice and try techniques but on hand in case I needed assistance. A really enjoyable day with a lovely lunch and got to take home a cracking couple of pieces that I can be proud of. Would really recommend!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Toby,I had a great time on this 1-2-1 woodturning course. Prior to the course Louise was quick to respond to emails and answer any questions. Simon is a great teacher and provides a great balance of guidance and space to try for yourself. Simon and Louise provided a lovely lunch and make you feel very supported and welcome. I highly recommend the course to anyone considering and wanting to learn about woodturning. Thank you both for a lovely day!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Emma,I attended a 1-2-1 beginners wood turning course, Simon is an excellent teacher giving plenty of good turning working practices. I've come away with new skills and will continue to practice those on the day which were a little poor. I am looking forward to putting my lathe to more use that just turning pens. Simon and Louise made me feel most welcome and I can highly recommend this course to anyone.
Many Thanks to you both.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Karl,My husband and I did the 2 Crafts in 1 Day with Louise and Simon & I could not recommend it more, what a brilliant day, no pressure, lovely relaxed atmosphere. If you want to forget your everyday stresses and concentrate on something that is both relaxing and addictive then book this course you won't regret it. We will definitely be back. Thank you both again.
Response from Blended Monkey:
It was a pleasure to meet you guys and we're thrilled you enjoyed the 2 Crafts in 1 Day experience.I attended the 1/2 day beginners woodturning workshop with Simon and had a great time brushing up long lost skills on a wood lathe. Simon is clearly a very skilled woodworker and made the afternoon interesting, using a variety of handtools to make the different cuts into our piece. He was patient and explained then demonstrated what was next before you got to try out too. We still had the time to make a Christmas Tree and talk about my own tools and he even made them better on his sharpening belt. I couldn't have asked for anything more and looking forward to the next step of learning how to make bowls.
Many, many thanks.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Chris,I wanted to try woodturning and this was the perfect way to do so. Simon was an excellent teacher and After a couple of practice pieces in the morning, where I learnt the basic technics, I spent the afternoon working on turning a beautiful beech bowl. Highly recommend it to anyone even slightly interested!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Alex, thanks for a complimentary review - much appreciated, and glad you enjoyed your day.I traveled 120 miles to attend my one to one day with Simon and every mile was worth the effort.
From the minute I arrived I was greeted and made to feel comfortable and drank coffee while the day was explained to me.
The instructions were clear and I had an extremely informative day that went all too quickly. An excellent lunch was provided.
Simon’s instruction technique is excellent and soon gets you hands on the lathe.
I left with an amazing bowl and real enthusiasm to get myself started on my new hobby in retirement.
I will return for a refresher lesson and definitely recommend Simon to anyone that wants an introduction to safe wood turning.
Thank you Simon
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Bill,An amazing day!
Under Simon's excellent tuition, supervision, and encouragement I turned a 2x2" square section length into a passably attractive honey dribbler, and an ugly lump of sycamore into a very bowl-like piece. (I wish I could add photographs - they are quite beautiful and I am so proud!) It was utterly absorbing.
As a complete novice (but an expert klutz) I was in danger of turning (geddit?!) my bowl into an eggcup but Simon rescued me. He was generous with his time, determined we should go away with fully finished pieces.
It was also inspiring to see what SimonTheExpert achieves - paper-thin bowls in example shapes, and spindles-as-art (both in their own right, by eccentric centring, and as a set that creates female forms in the gaps between them).
Can't recommend this highly enough :-)
But, if you don't want to find wood shavings in your underwear, wear one of the offered smocks!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi William,Everything about this course was excellent. The tuition clear and helpful taking note of my previous lack of experience. The tutor was very helpful and ensured the safety of the pupil at all times. The venue was well looked after and well stocked with appropriate equipment. This was one of the most enjoyable days I have spent for a long time and I would return for a more advanced course if it were to be offered. Lunch and refreshments were provided throughout the day, and were much appreciated. The follow-up notes and photos were unexpected and well thought through. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Chris,Excellent day had on the wood turning course. Both Simon & Louise made me feel most welcome on arrival. Very constructive morning and afternoon sessions with Simon. There to help you constantly and was most grateful for his advice. Nice to receive the follow up notes, photos and video reminding me of a memorable day.
Highly recommend the course to anyone. Will certainly be going back!
Thank you Louise for a lovely lunch by the way.
Kind Regards
John Rayner
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi John,I am a self confessed wood butcher having always enjoyed making practical objects. This course was a birthday present to allow me to experience a long term desire to try wood turning.
From the off Simon, Louise and their pets made me very welcome. The facilities are wonderful and Simon’s knowledge is extensive and he imparts it enthusiastically.
I would thoroughly recommend any course offered here due to the professionalism of Simon and Louise.
Following my rewarding day, I am designing additional storage space so I can empty my shed to create a workshop! Then I'll need another lesson (plus a lathe...) to further my knowledge.
Best wishes,
Richard
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Richard,I had such a lovely day and am very grateful for my wonderful gifts certificate from my best friend!
I was put at my ease upon arrival and was made to feel very welcome. Who could resist Harry the dog, Nala and Simba the cats and a beautiful garden?
The workshop was lovely with lots of tools and pieces to entice. Everything was clean, tidy and organised. I felt bad leaving a huge pile of shavings in my wake at the end! Simon introduced everything over coffee and explained how we would work.
Every step was explained clearly and demonstrated. I had never turned anything prior to this. I felt that I was in safe hands and could ask for more help whenever it was needed. It was lovely to be given time to practice the skills at my own pace. Making the drizzler was very pleasing. It really enabled me to see the skills I was trying to gain. Definitely need to come back to beads!
Simon was very attentive and ensured that I was a successful. He was very patient with my left handed translations! I loved every minute. The sense of awe and wonder in the beauty of the wood will remain with me. I am very proud of the things I made and I cannot recommended the course strongly enough.
We stopped for a lovely lunch half way through but I couldn’t wait to get back to start on my bowl if I am honest. The time passed so quickly.
I do hope that I will be able to return at some point and I will certainly keep a longer wood turning course on my retirement bucket list. I was definitely inspired to learn more. What a lovely hobby it would be. I also spied the ceramics workshop but have more of an eye on the silk option.
Thank you for a great introduction to something wonderful.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Lisa,I bought this for my 15 yr old son. Neither of us had any previous experience. I spent the day in the workshop as an observer as my son is a minor. Simon took time to explain things to the both of us, keeping my son 'hands-on' while allowing me to try and remember as much as possible. The day was relaxed and offers plenty of time to learn and make some nice pieces. Simon and Louise are welcoming and brilliant hosts. Nothing seemed too much trouble and a great lunch was supplied. Simon has since helped with advice on equipment and instruction.
Riley thoroughly enjoyed the day and has had me busy installing a lathe, sorting tools and sharpening equipment. With just this one day of tuition, he is capable of producing some pretty reasonable pieces alone. A complete success.
Next, the girls want to try the pottery classes, and I wouldn't be surprised if Riley wants to return to learn some more techniques. Many thanks, and if it isn't obvious, I would highly recommend to anyone, younger or older.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Matt & Riley,Like many of the reviews above, the day with Blended Monkey was bought for me as a present. Perhaps because I have made several walking sticks, my sons felt I should probably progress my skills!! The day exceed my expectations. Louise and Simon being the perfect hosts with a genuine welcome to the world of wood turning. Simon was patient, clear and concise with instructions along with his enthusiasm made the day one to remember. I would highly recommend Blended Monkey to novices as well as experienced individuals who want to expand their knowledge of wood turning and have an excellent value for money day out. Thank you Simon and Louise.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Alan,I had always been interested in taking up woodturning ever since the afternoon at school many years ago when I was allowed to try out the lathe in the woodwork class. So I was delighted when my wife gave me this one-day course (and a lathe!) as a birthday present.
The moment I arrived, I was made to feel very welcome by Louise and Simon. As a beginner I was very conscious of the piece of wood spinning on the lathe and the laws of physics, on the grounds that it is not natural for part of a tree to spin horizontally at 1000 rpm! However, Simon explained the issues around safety and safe practice, which was very reassuring. I had great fun turning up my first project - a honey dipper - during which Simon taught the principles of turning coves and beads. In the afternoon, I produced a bowl, again with Simon's guidance. He is an expert tutor; his teaching style is relaxed but professional and the course is taught in a workshop that is well equipped and well organised. I took along my own recently purchased turning tools, which Simon checked over and tweaked to ensure they worked efficiently. I now understand the purpose of each of the gouges, and was also shown how to sharpen the tools and the different types of grind that I can try out. He also gave advice on the care and storage of woodturning blanks.
After the course Simon emailed the course notes to me, plus the videos that were shot during the day - these are really helpful. At the end of the day I was fired with enthusiasm and felt much more confident about the practice of woodturning. My daughter has already asked me if I could make her a bedside table with turned legs. In at the deep end!
Louise provided an excellent lunch, and tea and coffee appeared at just the right times. I would thoroughly recommend this course, and Blended Monkey, to anyone interested in learning a new skill, or extending their knowledge. I might even go back and try the pottery workshop!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Graham,I was made to feel welcome by Simon and Louise the minute I stepped out of my car.
Very professional and friendly tuition, I couldn't have asked for better. Though I had some idea of what I was doing I still learned an awful lot in one day. I would recommend this course to anyone even vaguely interested in woodturning - they'd soon get the bug.
Wouldn't mind going back next year for a refresher and upgrade.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Rog,I was extremely fortunate to have the 1-day woodturning course as a surprise Christmas present from last year. I was looking forward to my workshop day which was booked in the August. It was definitely worth the wait and had a fantastic day learning about woodturning with Simon. I've learn't so many different wood turning techniques in a day and successfully made a honey drizzler and bowl. I couldn't recommend Blended Monkey enough.
Thank you Simon and Louise for a fantastic experience.
All the best, David
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi David,An excellent day spent with Simon making a mess in his workshop and creating some awesome wooden creations on the lathe. Friendly and bright atmosphere! I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Dan,My wife and I attended half a day pottery and wood turning courses. We loved them! I enjoyed learning all the wood Turning techniques and using the tools to create my honey drizzle. My wife liked making pots using the slab method and attempting a go on the pottery wheel. Both Simon and Louise were very friendly, Patient and great teachers. We are already planning our next visit! We highly recommend it to anyone looking for something different to do.
Response from Blended Monkey:
It was lovely to meet you both and Simon and I enjoyed having you guys in our studios. We're pleased you've both found the half-day sessions to be a good taster and that you're keen to come along for a full day in each craft. We look forward to meeting you guys again!I would really recomend this course for anyone interested in wood turning. Simon was such a great teacher and so knowledgeable. It was a great introduction and it was wonderful to be able to make something lovely by the end of the day. It left me wanting to do more.
Thank you sinon and louise for the day and for being so welcoming!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Molly,The Blended Monkey 1-Day Course is a very good way to experience woodturning for the first time. It is professionally organised and run. In addition the tuition is flexible to reflect the student's interests and existing knowledge. The workshop itself is well equipped and safely managed. Simon is a fine teacher keen to share his skills and passion for woodturning in a very accessible manner. The follow-up pack of course notes and equipment guide is very helpful. Together Simon and Louise make a great team.

Response from Blended Monkey:

Any questions or queries, please feel free to get in touch. This was a fantastic course in a great setting. I was made welcome from the start and the level of tuition was just right and extremely good . I was given loads of tips on how to develop my wood turning, storing wood and tool care.

Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Chris,I had a wonderful day on Simon's woodturning course, and have learned new skills which will enable me to develop my new found hobby. This was a birthday gift from my partner which will keep on giving for many years to come!
Simon really explained everything well and pretty soon I was getting hand’s on tuition and slowly but surely building my confidence under Simon’s expert and watchful eye.
Simon and Louise really looked after me well with plenty of food and refreshments during the day, and all set in lovely surroundings.
I’m delighted with my projects which I was able to take home, and would strongly recommend Simon’s course to anyone wanting to try their hand at woodturning.
Highly recommended !
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Joe,The level of tuition was exactly right - clear, well explained and the right pace. I was pleased to learn so much and come away with pieces that looked good. The facilities there are good, with a good light lunch and pleasant surroundings too. I'd readily go back for more, but wondering how and where I can put kit of my own!
Many thanks to both.
Response from Blended Monkey:

Hi Stuart. Thank you so much for a lovely review. You were a pleasure to teach and I hope you take up the craft; any help you need, please just shout.Simon and Louise gave me a very warm welcome when I arrived and what followed was a wonderful day of woodturning! Simon is a brilliant teacher - informative, inspiring, patient and helpful. I felt at home throughout the day and whenever I had questions or needed advice, Simon was there to help. Like all great teachers Simon stood back and let me get on with it, but always with his watchful eye to make sure I used the tools and techniques correctly.
Drinks, snacks and a lovely lunch in the dappled shade of the garden added to the day and in the end I'd managed to make a honey scoop and sycamore bowl, much to my delight and my wife's astonishment!
If you're thinking of trying your hand at woodturning, look no further than Simon at Blended Monkey - I can't recommend it highly enough!

Louise put on a lovely lunch which was greatly appreciated and the tea kept coming just when you needed it, all in all, a great day and one I would recommend to anyone interested in getting into woodturning.

If anyone is thinking of doing something like this I couldn’t think of a better place to start.
I am looking forward to doing the Intermediate course in the future.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Phil,I have done some woodturning for several years but am self-taught and never had 1-2-1 instruction, consequently my technique leaves a lot to be desired! I saw this 1-day course, a birthday present from my wife, as an ideal opportunity to do something about this.
From the moment I arrived Simon and Louise made me most welcome and the whole day was delightful. Simon is an inspirational teacher and as well as helping me to improve my basic skills he suggested lots of ideas for extending the range of projects I could consider in the future. I also learnt a great deal about the way Simon has organised his workshop and enjoyed chatting about many different aspects of this fascinating craft. Louise provided frequent cups of tea and a lovely lunch which greatly added to the enjoyment of the day.
I can thoroughly recommend spending a day with Simon whether you are an absolute beginner or more experienced.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Chris,The course is a wonderful introduction into a new skill. Simon has a very relaxed style of teaching that puts you at ease straight away. His enthusiasm and passion to help you achieve a wonderful bowl is second to none. I must also thank Louise for a wonderful farm house lunch. I am definitely looking forward to another session with Simon
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Steve,The day was a Christmas present from my wife. I had done some woodturning at school, some 45 years ago, but remembered none of it. The workshop Simon has is lovely and the set up great. Simon is a really good teacher, explains things very clearly and patiently and lets you try things for yourself. I found the day flew by and the turning was very therapeutic. I came away with 2 really pleasing bits of work, and the bug. I will definitely do more woodturning.
As I said above, the workshop was really nice. It is well kept and safety is obviously a high priority for Simon. He provided all the gear you needed and had excellent ventilation systems.
There is nothing I could fault by the day. Louise provided a lovely lunch to round off a perfect day. I thoroughly recommend this course.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Tony,This was a birthday present , delayed by Covid. Everything about the course was excellent. The communications before hand, the environment and work shop, the lunch but especially the hands on side of it and the pieces I made. I have inherited a lathe and tools and was keen to start learning how to use them. Incredibly practical and useful as well as relaxing and the time flew by.
I know you can do a day split between pottery and woodturning, as a fun day i think that would be really good fun too.
I can't wait to get turning myself
The whole thing beats anything you could get from a book or youtube hands down
Simon was a great teacher and gave the right balance of help and being left to get on with it.
Thanks Oliver
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Oliver,A day to savour. Simon introduced me to lathe and tools and we quickly began to get hands on, looking at techniques and learning do's and dont's. A lovely lunch broke up the session and I was very happy with the honey dipper and the bowl which I had produced by the end of the day.
Response from Blended Monkey:

Just what I needed. Wishing Simon and Louise all the best.
The follow up notes and photos of the day were a great reminder to share with friends and family.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Julian,The days 1 to 1 woodturning course was a Xmas present from my wife and although delayed due to Covid was well worth the wait as it was fantastic. Simon is very knowledgeable and had plenty if patience with a complete novice! The workshop facilities, machinery and tools etc were great and gave a very good taster for this craft.
Plenty of coffee and very nice lunch was provided, thank you Louise.
I came away with two pieces of work which my wife thinks I must have purchased, not so, I made them all be with a little help (a lot of help!)
The post course notes and equipment advice schedule were emailed over to me that evening and are compressive and full of photos and links, will prove very helpful if I take it further.
I could not recommend this course enough, it was a five hour round trip and I would be more than happy to do again - great day, thank you Simon and Louise.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you take the plunge and need some help.I really enjoyed the woodturning experience. Simon, the tutor, gave a really good introduction to both the tools and the wood we would use. His balance of demonstrating what we would do and letting the student loose was ideal. In the morning I made a honey spoon and in the afternoon alovely bowl. A thoroughly enjoyable day with an interesting tutor and ample refreshments, including a tasty lunch in the kitchen. I might well be booking another session in the near future. Thanks for the experience!
Response from Blended Monkey:
We're really pleased you enjoyed your woodturning experience! My wife got me this course as a Christmas present I had a fantastic day. Simon was an excellent teacher full of useful knowledge and guidance which he happly passed on. Produced two beautiful pices of work of which I am very proud. Beautiful surroundings, nice workshop I would happily recommend this course to anyone.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Sid,Sorry for the delay in sending this review, I am not good at doing reviews as they usual sound naff if they're good.
I came on the day out at the end of October after receiving it as a birthday present, I had bought a lathe in June this year and try to get to grips with it, making a lot of mistakes and with all the catches started to get anxious when using it. Did make a few things but wasn't very happy with finished item.
So came to see Simon and we started at the very beginning with the basics, went through everything tools, sharpening, how to stand, and most important how to use the chisels the correct way!
Well worth it, if I was paying for myself I might have had second thoughts, but I would have been wrong, definitely one to one tuition was ideal for me.
I can now go to the lathe and with confidence start turning.

Thank you, Howard

We're so pleased you guys enjoyed your pairs woodturning workshop. It was a pleasure teaching you both and it's always great to see students leaving the workshop with a smile on their faces :-).WOW what an excellent day, from the gate opening to the gate closing when we arrived and finished the welcome we recieved from Simon and Louise was second to none. Simon is an excellent tutor who works at your pace, his knowledge no only for the skills of wood turning but also about the types of wood, and what the tools are used for. This being my first experience of this skill has given me an appetite for more. Louise was lovely keeping the tea and coffee coming and the wonderful lunch.
I thoroughly recommend this work shop for anyone wanting to learn this skill.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Paul,We thoroughly enjoyed our two person Wood Turning Beginners course with Simon and are delighted with what we took home. We made a beautiful bowl, a butter pat press, a light pull and two honey dippers, the latter being the result of our first practice pieces. It is amazing how a square block of wood becomes cylindrical with just a few, carefully guided, moves. Excellent, patient instruction and an altogether very interesting and satisfying experience with real, tangible, output. We learned a lot. The lunch provided was also excellent and just what we would have chosen had we been asked for a preference. We were looked after extremely well and it was just 20 minutes from home. Could not have been better.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Sheila/Paul,This wood turning course was bought by my family as a birthday present in February. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions my initial date was put back until Sept. Simon and Louise were exceptionally helpful in arranging everything. The course was excellent, Simon's teaching was very thorough and his patience was second to none! It was great to take home my projects, a honey dipper and bowl, which were admired by family and friends. My daughter was welcomed for lunch which we were able to enjoy in their lovely garden.
Both Simon and Louise are lovely friendly people and it was a joy to be in their company. We hope to see them in the future at the local craft fair. I thoroughly recommend this course for anyone. Just a shame I didn't get to do Louise's pottery course. Perhaps another birthday present!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Terry,I had a fantastic time on the day's woodturning course. I was a total beginner but was given lots of support and so happy with my pieces. It was great to be given the right amount of time and freedom to explore the tools, but also know that I had support there whenever it was needed (quite a lot!).
Lunch and snacks were also of the highest standard!
Simon has been really helpful in advising about tools and I can't wait to develop my skills further in the future.
Response from Blended Monkey:

Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Sarah, hi Robin,I am a recent beginner to wood turning and though I recently joined a club I need a course to help me improve.
On my arrival Simon and his dear wife made feel at home, including their dogs. Simon explained what the day consisted of and the safety measures of his workshop.
He was very patient and fully explained on...
What type of chisels there were.
How to hold the chisels.
How to stand in front of the lathe.
The speed of the lathe.
And much much more.
He allowed me to be creative and gave tips to improve.
I was looked after throughout the day with refreshments and the lunch was very nice.
I made a bowl, the best I have ever made (my own tries before though ok were not as good) it was smooth and great. The other item was a honey spoon and though simple, was indeed welcomed by my dear wife.
I would recommend all beginners to attend a course like this one before you get into bag habits.
Thanks Simon a great day was had and if there are more course you do to go beyond my present standard then I will book another in the future.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Keith, thank you for your lovely review. It was fab to meet you and we'd love to have you back in the future. I’d done some woodturning before, but it was really good to get some proper instruction on the matter.
Both Simon and Louise were very friendly and made the entire day a real pleasure.
I would definitely recommend this course to both newcomers and those with some experience as well.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Thomas,This day course was a brilliant introduction to woodturning having never done any previously.
Simon was a great tutor who took time to explain things in detail before handing over the tools for me to have a try and was always on hand to give advice or step in when required.
This course was very relaxed and informal which was ideal for someone with no turning experience and both Simon and Louise put me at ease from the start which was great as I was quite nervous when I arrived.
Many thanks to Louise for the lovely lunch and the not to mention the endless supply of refreshments throughout the day.
The information pack supplied after the course with some woodturning equipment and beginners notes as well as photos and video of the day was a nice touch.
I would recommend this course to anyone who would like to try their hand at woodturning.
Regards,
Brian.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Brian,Simon was an excellent teacher and I learned a lot of new techniques which I feel I can put to use on my own. The lunch was lovely too!
Overall a great course, I would definitely recommend it.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Mat,This was a most enjoyable course and I left with numerous tips and, of course, improved techniques. Simon and Louise were great hosts and the day started with a warm welcome from both. Simon was a very patient tutor and stepped in whenever necessary but also allowed us (a 2 person course) time to practice what we had been shown. Louise ensured we had enough drinks throughout the day, together with a lovely lunch which we ate in the very pleasant garden. When I am ready to go to the next level, I will be giving Simon a call and am happy to recommend this course to anyone who wants to start woodturning; but be warned - it is addictive!
Response from Blended Monkey:
Hi Michael,Brilliant introduction into the art of woodturning in a beautiful setting. Simon is such a patient tutor, which he had to be when I took lumps out of my honey dipper and blunted his tools through misuse. Nonetheless he persevered and I came away very satisfied and feeling competent enough to have a go on my own.
Response from Blended Monkey:
Paul, thank you for your lovely review. An excellent day's introduction to wood turning. Simon was a great tutor allowing me plenty of time on the lathe and stepping in when I needed support (quite often!). I've wanted to try wood turning for some time and couldn't have had a better introduction.
Louise kept us well watered and fed so, all in all, a very enjoyable day.
Many thanks!
Response from Blended Monkey:

Response from Blended Monkey:
Christian, you were a pleasure to teach and picked up the craft really well. I look forward to helping you progress in the craft, and, now that you have a lathe, you can practice, practice, practice! 😊Simon is a really nice guy, and did a good job of teaching me not only the basics of wood turning, but also what tools and equipment I should get as a beginner.
I highly recommend if your a beginner who's thinking about having a go at wood turning.

Hi Janet,
