Woodworking Essentials - Weekend Course

X

Description

The Woodworking Essentials course is specifically designed to help aspiring woodworkers with no previous experience get off on the right track. Woodworking environments can sometimes be seen as a bit daunting and male-dominated. Tutor and professional designer & maker Jo Weaden set out to change this. She has fostered an encouraging and nurturing space at Atlantic Makers, in which new woodworkers can build confidence while learning the best ways to approach making beautiful, functional objects from wood. In this course, Jo teaches the essentials of woodworking, from selecting the wood, to planing, jointing, sanding and oiling the final piece. The course will encompass modern and traditional joinery using English hardwoods, such as oak, ash and and sycamore. She will help you learn how best to use hand tools and power tools, and how to keep them sharp and in perfect order. Jo will also guide you through our professional workshop, to help you gain an understanding of some of the machines and powertools that you may consider using in your future projects.

Maker

The Atlantic Makers Collective (Atlantic Makers Ltd) was formed in 2020 in Bude, North Cornwall. The four directors share a passion for making fine furniture and we sought to build a workshop that not only produces exceptional furniture, but also benefits the local community. At the heart of this principle is sharing our resources and skills with talented, local makers and providing the space, facilities and support to help them grow their own businesses. We design and manufacture bespoke furniture for private and commercial clients, and run short-courses to inspire and nurture a love of woodworking. We also work with other designers and workshops to manufacture their furniture here in Cornwall. Our profits are used to grow the business, to support other makers within the Collective, and to employ and train Junior Makers and give them a strong start in the furniture-making industry.
