Intro to Joinery Weekend in Yorkshire

X

Description

Let me draw you in to the craft of woodworking and how enjoyable it can be. You'll learn how to cut some traditional furniture-making joints, such as a halving joint, mortice and tenon and how to joint boards together by hand. The focus is on learning and giving you some experience of life in a workshop without the pressure of getting a project finished. We will use a mix of hand-tools, both western and Japanese, including different kinds of saws, chisels, planes and marking tools. I'll also introduce you to the machines and handheld power tools that I use to prepare the wood. You will work with different woods such as beech, oak, walnut, tulipwood and ash and get a feel for their differences. All the wood you will need is included in the price and all tools are provided. Even if you've never picked up a chisel before, everything will be explained as you progress and by the end of the course you'll hopefully feel confident to continue making with wood. My workshop is in the picturesque old market town of Kirkbymoorside on the edge of the breathtaking North York Moors National Park, halfway between the historic city of York and the coast. It's an ideal location if you want to combine a woodworking class with stunning scenery, fantastic walks, local food and a general holiday vibe. The course runs at the weekend over 2 days, from 10am-5pm on Saturday and 10-1pm on Sunday. With just four people in each class you can be sure of getting help from me as needed and a chance to ask any questions that crop up. Please note that you must be 18 years or older to join my classes.

I moved up to Yorkshire in 2023 to be closer to family, after over a decade of making furniture and teaching woodworking classes for adults at my workshop in Islington, North London. My new space has the same feel – it's a real, professional woodworking workshop where I make my own furniture and commissions in an environment full of my own random woodworking curiosities. Ever seen a Japanese grooving plane? 18th Century dovetail saw? What about a homemade belt sander? I look forward to welcoming you with plentiful tea, random anecdotes, and always good cheer.

FAQs

Yes there is, in the yard right outside the workshop and its free.

Nope! I give everyone a toolkit to use while they are in the workshop. It's all good stuff, my characteristic mix of old, new, Western and Japanese tools
