First steps in pen and ink

First steps in pencil, pen and ink at Flatford Mill

Starting right from the beginning, this course looks at the importance of lines, how to use them and how different weights of line affect a visual image.
It goes on to explain relative tone, looking at how to express tone in pen and ink.  This is the place to start if you are a beginner, or if you are new to pen and ink.

Tutor: Debora Cane
Debora is an enthusiastic art tutor with over 30 years’ experience. All of her courses concentrate on simple concepts and practical techniques and are suitable for everyone; no previous experience is required. Every session has planned content and takes varying approaches to help students build up their own techniques and style. Debora draws and paints daily (mainly in pen and ink) and undertakes illustrations for small commissions. She is a Professional Associate of the SAA.

What to Bring
Cartridge paper (140gsm or above, A4 size) either loose sheets or in a sketchbook
Pencils (2B, HB)
Set of black drawing pens of varying thicknesses (at least one thick and one thin) these need to be pigment fine liners (they need to be non-water-soluble).  I would recommend any of the Faber Castell Pitt artists pens, or the Sigma Micron, or Staedtler pigment fine liners.
Coloured pens: in a variety of colours and thicknesses (whatever you have to hand).
Small set of watercolours (I personally prefer schminke but any set will do).
