About the Course
Release your inner creative on our Introduction to calligraphy workshop run by Edinburgh calligraphy artist Panna Chauhan.
Calligraphy is an art form lasting over centuries. Even in its simplest form it can look beautiful, and it is an art form that can be learned...with patience.
We offer two Introduction to calligraphy workshops: one where you learn the foundational hand, and one where you learn the italic hand. On each you will begin by learning the basics of calligraphy including the different types of nibs, correct sizing of letters and how to hold the pen with the right tension to achieve a fluid letter. You will practice letter forms in either the 'foundational' or italic hand, and create a calligraphy piece to take home and inspire you to keep practising.
You will then apply your newly acquired writing skills to creating a more abstract calligraphy piece, where the letters do not have to be lined, and you can be creative and inventive, letting the letters flow in a direction that feels right.
You will have the option of creating your abstract calligraphy piece onto paper, which you will then frame ready to take home; or onto a small piece of silk using gold or silver markers, which you will then colour in using silk paints which will also give you a taster of how silk painting works.
The workshop is suitable for beginners, or for those returning to calligraphy or wanting to try a new style of lettering.
Please note we also run a fun, festive-themed calligraphy taster workshop in November and you can find more information on our website.
Refreshment breaks - featuring locally sourced products - are an important part of The Arienas Collective experience. We are fortunate to have a fantastic range of independent shops and producers nearby who we love to support. Our breaks allow time to socialise, make new friends, and chat to the artists.
Our artists support you throughout the day offering one-to-one guidance and tips on design, as well as encouraging collaboration through sharing of ideas within the group. They will do their best to answer any questions you may have.
The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a supportive and welcoming home environment in the Edinburgh New Town. Spaces are limited so our artists can offer hands-on help and support. All equipment is provided, as are all the materials you will need. Just turn up, leave any day-to-day worries behind, and immerse yourself in creating something unique.
All The Arienas Collective experiences are also available as a private group booking.
For more information email via the contact form above.
Please note that The Arienas Collective experiences are run from a first-floor open plan reception room and unfortunately we do not have lift access. Please let us know of any skin or food allergies when booking.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
The price for the day includes all materials and refreshments, and you will take home your final, framed calligraphy piece and a set of practise sheets to inspire you to keep practising.
Really enjoyed my day with Panna learning Calligraphy in the beautiful Arienas space that's kindly provided by hostess Lynn.
We spent most of the morning practicing our alphabet with both calligraphy pens and pen and ink. Then after a beautiful lunch we got more creative in the afternoon learning how to write within shapes and varying the sizes of our letters. At the end we cut out and arranged our words and letters to create a personal artwork which we got to frame and take home.
Panna was endlessly patient with all of us and gently took us through the process in a gradually unveiling way. Would definitely recommend as it was lovely relaxing day spent with like minded people.

I spent a full day doing the course with Panna taking the course and Lynn providing tasty treats.
The course went through the basics and we produced 2 pieces to take home along with lots of inspiration to carry on at home.
Beautiful space to get creative and meet other like-minded people.
I can't recommend enough!
