About the Course

Release your inner creative on our Introduction to calligraphy workshop run by Edinburgh calligraphy artist Panna Chauhan.

Calligraphy is an art form lasting over centuries. Even in its simplest form it can look beautiful, and it is an art form that can be learned...with patience.

We offer two Introduction to calligraphy workshops: one where you learn the foundational hand, and one where you learn the italic hand. On each workshop you will begin by learning the basics of calligraphy, including the different types of nibs, correct sizing of letters and how to hold the pen with the right tension to achieve a fluid letter.

You will practice letter forms in either the 'foundational' or italic hand in your calligraphy pack, which you will take away with you so that you can continue to practise at home.

You will then apply your newly acquired writing skills to creating a more abstract calligraphy piece, where the letters do not have to be lined, and you can be creative and inventive by letting the letters flow in a direction that feels right.

You will have the option of creating your abstract calligraphy piece on paper, which you will then frame ready to take home; or onto a small piece of silk using gold or silver markers, which you will then colour in using silk paints which will also give you a taster of how silk painting works.

The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as for those returning to calligraphy, or wanting to try a new style of lettering.

Our group size is kept small so that our artist can support you throughout the day, offering one-to-one guidance and tips as well as encouraging collaboration through sharing of ideas within the group. They will do their best to answer any questions you may have.

Please note that The Arienas Collective workshops are run from the first-floor of a Georgian mews house and unfortunately we do not have lift access.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

The price for the day includes all materials and refreshments, and you will take home your final, framed calligraphy piece and a pack of practise sheets.

Really enjoyed my day with Panna learning Calligraphy in the beautiful Arienas space that's kindly provided by hostess Lynn.

We spent most of the morning practicing our alphabet with both calligraphy pens and pen and ink. Then after a beautiful lunch we got more creative in the afternoon learning how to write within shapes and varying the sizes of our letters. At the end we cut out and arranged our words and letters to create a personal artwork which we got to frame and take home.

Panna was endlessly patient with all of us and gently took us through the process in a gradually unveiling way. Would definitely recommend as it was lovely relaxing day spent with like minded people.

I spent a full day doing the course with Panna taking the course and Lynn providing tasty treats.

The course went through the basics and we produced 2 pieces to take home along with lots of inspiration to carry on at home.

Beautiful space to get creative and meet other like-minded people.

I can't recommend enough!
