About the Course
An introduction to woodturning in Surrey - 2 day course (the course dates shown are for the first day of each course. Check on my website to see if there are spaces).
This course has a fixed content to ensure that a good grounding in all the basic skills is given and is usually run over two consecutive days. The first day is devoted to spindle techniques and turning wood between centres, sharpening, the use of the roughing gouge, spindle gouge, skew chisel and parting tool. The second day concentrates on faceplate or bowl turning and the wonders of the bowl gouge.
Throughout both days emphasis is given to mastering new skills in such a way that when the student returns to their own workshop they can put into practice all they have learnt.
On the first day, project options normally include a candlestick or a small vase. The second day's projects are usually a small chopping board, or a sphere in the morning followed by a small bowl in the afternoon.
All the materials used for these projects are included. If you have something particular in mind just let me know and I can usually incorporate it into the course.
It is possible to include a small table lamp as a project. Combining both spindle techniques for the stem on the first afternoon and faceplate techniques for the base on the second morning. The wood for this option is included but not the wire, plug or lamp fittings.
This course is usually run with two students but if required there is a 50% supplement to guarantee 1 to 1 tuition (i.e. course fee becomes £315) or a 20% discount if 2 students book together (i.e £168 per student).
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
The course fee includes all materials used, including timber and advice on the purchase of equipment is available.
NB Smocks are available in a limited range of sizes (large) and a basic dust mask and safety goggles are provided for pupils use. Students may however find their own more comfortable if they have them and should feel free to bring them.
If the student already has any wood turning tools of their own (chisels and gouges) it is helpful if they are brought along.
Students are welcome to join me for a simple lunch of home made bread, soup and cheese. There is a plentiful supply of tea or coffee throughout both of the days.
A really good and comprehensive introduction to wood turning. I will definitely be tooling up my lathe.
Thank you Gregory.

Brilliant course. It was a birthday present, as I love wood and particularly wanted to know how to turn wood. Gregory is an excellent teacher. I can’t believe what I achieved in two days. A very practical course where we were on the lathe most of the time and Gregory assumed no prior knowledge which was good as I even needed to be taught how to use some basic tools like sanders!
I would thoroughly recommend the course.
Deirdre Moss - - #26592
Gregory's relaxed and very informative teaching style soon overcame my concerns about trying a new skill at my age and I was amazed at how well the items we produced turned out.
Would strongly recommend this course to anyone who has any interest in learning the art of woodturning.
The lunches were an added bonus, with superb home made bread and very tasty soup.
Derek May - - #26482
Thanks to Gregory's patient teaching style we learned so much in only 2 days. It was relaxed yet perfectly paced to cover everything. I was nervous not having touched a lathe in over 40 years but I was soon gaining in confidence in using the tools and techniques taught by Gregory. We will be back for a further course in wood turning next year.
Chris Bower - - #25915
Greg is knowledgable, friendly, welcoming (his workshop is in his home) and made the 2 day turning course fun, as well as transforming in terms of new skills learned.
I left the course with three pieces I am proud of and went back to my own workshop to create some more spiral shavings (and *not* any more "designer kindling").
Oh - and coffee, home-made bread and ploughman's lunch was very nice, too! Highly recommended.
Simon George - - #25863
Greg was superb. It was a fantastic refresher and I walked away with many more techniques and tips that I couldn't wait to apply at home, not to mention some finished products which I'm really proud of. I would highly recommend this.
Christof Taylor-Smith - - #25861
Gregory was incredibly patient, explained basic techniques in a way that gradually built into more complex ones and dispensed information above and beyond the techniques of the craft; I highly recommend his course.
On top of that he is a excellent teacher, friendly guy and makes a mean cup of coffee - and I'm particular about my coffee. Not a single regret about the course, money well spent!
Thanks again for your time Gregory!
Matthew Rogers - - #24285
I have really enjoyed my 2 days course. Greg is friendly, knowledgeable and very patient. I have learned a lot and created some beautiful pieces to take home. I really recommend his course.

I have just spent Monday 18th/Tuesday19th with Gregory, beginners course, what a fantastic time, Gregory himself is very laid back but definately not complacent, he has plenty of patience which was definately needed with me !
His experience in teaching shows through, everything explained until you understand, never felt rushed.
Learned so much, cannot list all, his knowledge is amazing
Cannot recommend this course enough
Thanks Gregory for a great two days

I was given the 2 day woodturning course as a Christmas present and having just finished it I still can't believe how much I achieved as a complete novice and right out of my comfort zone. Greg is a patient and engaging teacher who guides you through all the basic woodturning techniques in a friendly, relaxed manner and encourages you to give it all a go even if you are a bit hesitant as I was. I felt so proud to leave with a candlestick and bowl (which I can't stop looking at!) and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this course to anyone interested in having a go at woodturning or simply just learning a new creative skill. One of the best presents I've ever received - thank you again Greg.
Gemma MacLennan - - #20416
This course was amazing. Greg was kind, patient and able to translate his skills and knowledge down to my level as complete novice. I turned a candlestick and a bowl which I will treasure. The content and pace were perfect. A world of possibilities is now open. Thank you.
Caroline Howells - - #20383
Had a great couple of days with Greg, he’s training techniques and wealth of knowledge were amazing! I was interested in wood turning before the course but now I am obsessed!! Hope to go on the advanced course when I got some practice in at home. Lovely lunch too
Julian - - #19966
I've just completed an excellent 2 day beginners course with Greg, and could not recommend it highly enough. He is not only obviously a brilliant and talented turner, but has the ability to teach too. The pace was just right and enabled two of us to make three pieces within the two days, learning the basics of equipment, tools and cuts. I feel very fortunate to have found Greg's course and it was a very enjoyable two days with a bonus delicious lunch each day, thank you!
CathB - - #19729
Had a great 2 days on the introduction to woodturning course, Gregory was very patient and explained each step, i managed to produce 3 items which i am very happy with. I had never done woodturning before and wanted to give it a go, i would certainly consider taking further courses with Gregory and would recommend him to others wishing to try woodturning. Great lunch too! Thanks Gregory
Bryan H - - #19696
A very enjoyable 2 day course and I felt I learned a lot.
Tuition was great and Greg was very knowledgeable, patient and friendly. Pace was good and the ratio of 2 students to 1 was helpful with someone to share the learning with. I need to practice the techniques now.
Thanks for a very useful and helpful course with some lovely pieces made to take home and show the family.
Mary H - - #19604
Had 2 great days on the Basic Woodturning course. Many thanks to Greg who is a very patient and encouraging teacher. Learnt various techniques including how to sharpen your tools - an essential part of turning. Highly recommend this course too anyone wanting to learn turning. Made 2 items to be proud of and surprised my friends. Hope to return for another course layer in the year Thanks again

Greg is a man who is a master of his art, and possesses that rare ability of being able to teach that skill to others in a relaxed and confident manner.
I would highly recommend the course to anyone considering turning, and I had a great 2 days.
Last but not least, he makes good soup and bakes good bread!
Will certainly go back for further tuition in the future.
Andrew Rowley - - #18832
Greg is a legend!! I've never seen someone so passionate and into their scene as him. My son and I spent yesterday with him in his Surrey workshop and came out with a decent basic knowledge of lathe working and above all, safety AND a fantastic bowl, we each made!
If you're thinking of getting into this or looking to improve your knowledge and skills to much higher levels, then Greg is your man.
Great guy, fun day! We'll be back. Thank you!!
andy macateer - - #18806
An excellent two days introductory course covering a lot of ground with a small class of only two allowing plenty of individual attention. The course included both spindle moulding, bowl turning and advice on sharpening and finishing. I came away with two finished items. Even got picked up from the station on a particularly wet morning ...
Andrew - - #18081
Greg is a natural teacher, which means he imparts knowledge clearly and he does so with patience. I made a lot more progress in the two days than I had expected and I was very pleased with the two pieces - candle-stick and a bowl - that I produced. I would be delighted to return for one of the more advanced courses when I've built up some experience with the skills I have learnt. I would recommend the course to anyone starting out in woodturning.
Michael - - #17184
I am hugely grateful to Gregory Moreton for giving me the woordturning bug!
His teaching is excellent and very accommodating and he inspired me to look forward to 'retirement' which will definitely include woodturning. 2 of the most worthwhile and helpful days I can remember.Great facilities with loads of common sense as well! Keep up the good work, Gregory!
Brian Prothero - - #14288
I thoroughly enjoyed my two days with Gregory, learning the theory and techniques of woodturning. A brilliant course, taught in a relaxed environment, great hospitality and I'm really pleased with what I managed to produce too!
I would definitely recommend booking this course if you want to learn how to turn wood; if I can do it, anyone can!
I can't wait to experiment and put what I have learnt into practice now.
Kate Dawkins - - #13683
Had an amazing two days with Gregory. He was a great teacher who allowed you to progress at your own pace and never took over. We spent over 95% of the time at the lathe which was great and we both couldn't believe the pieces we managed to produce. We had some lovely lunches and a great time. Highly recommend.
Charlie Bottomley - - #13458
Gregory’s two day introduction gives an excellent introduction to the basics of wood turning. The course was highly informative and I left with two nice pieces which were much better than I expected from my first taste of wood turning.
I certainly intend to return for a follow up course.
David Power - - #11796
Thank you Greg for an excellent introduction to the art of wood turning. It was a very enjoyable and rewarding couple of days. I did not expect beforehand to be able to produce two beautiful pieces of work during that time (with considerable help and patience from Greg!).
Peter Fawcett - - #10013
Had two days lessons with Mr Moreton, really fantastic experience. We learned the theory and had hands on technique as well.
Ms Caixia Zhang - - #8995
Had two very nice days with Greg in his workshop. Learned a lot and enjoyed every minute of it. My skills have improved with the help of a very patient Greg. Love the pieces I was able to produce and take home.
Marijke van Yperen - - #8817
An extremely useful, interesting and informative 2 days spent with Greg. I had absolutely no experience of wood turning but by the end of the two days, I felt that I had learnt enough to enable me to progress with woodturning as a hobby. Although my son possesses a lathe and is already fairly skilled, he still benefitted hugely from the 2 days with Greg. A highly recommended course for any skill level. We will no doubt be returning in the future.
Mike & Colin Keyworth - - #7123
Did this course with my husband and we had a great time, learning the technical side and gaining confidence. The lunch was awesome as well!
Amanda Collier - - #7030
A fantastic beginners course which I cannot recommend highly enough. I had inherited a lathe and tools a couple of years ago but had not been able to produce much but after 2 days with Gregory I feel confident and inspired.
Gregory shared his knowledge of, and passion for woodturning in a way that made it very easy to learn and I came away with two very professional pieces. Oh, and the lunch was pretty good too.
Many thanks, Gregory.
Nick Webb - - #6617
Just spent the most fabulous 2 days with Gregory in considerably improving my woodturning skills. Gregory was very patient and asked me what I wanted to get out of the course and tailored it to suit me. I practiced and practiced with help from Gregory, but I was doing the work. We had some chats as well on various subjects including a shared other hobby we both have. I can honestly say the course was worth every penny, Gregory helped me sharpen my tools and gave good advice on what I can change when I get back home to make the job easier and quicker. I was also introduced to power sanding, which makes life a lot easier. Gregory's style, knowledge and enthusiasm is a winning combination. I would thoroughly recommend this course to beginners and even those with some practice under their belts, you wont regret it. Thanks Gregory
Martin Sanders - - #6415
An excellent two days spent with a friend, learning wood turning pretty much from scratch. Greg was very good at explaining techniques and also very patient when we struggled to get things right! The course gave us a great understanding of the basics of wood turning, which with practice, can be built upon. Greg was very generous in sharing his knowledge, giving us lots of helpful tips. He also prepared and gave us two beautiful pieces of wood, with which we were just about able to make a couple of very special bowls to take home with us. The family were impressed!
Many thanks for a tiring, but very enjoyable, couple of days.
Ian Thomson - - #5823
This course is an excellent introduction to wood turning. From knowing nothing about it at the start I was able to produce 3 professional looking pieces by the end of it. Gregory was a very good teacher and found the right balance between showing us what to do and letting us try things for ourselves. Extremely happy with the progress I made during the course and very pleased with the pieces I managed to produce over the two days. I'd recommend this to anyone.
Thank you Gregory!
Marcus Purse - - #5592
Gregory was a patient and skilled teacher. He never 'took over' and let us progress at our own pace. We were truly thrilled with the pieces we made. We covered so much in two days it was extraordinary. I went with my husband but any pair could do this with Gregory - friends, mum and son, anyone. My husband enjoyed the technical details and my lack of experience with tools and machinery made absolutely not difference. Great two days.
Kate C. - - #4864
Had a really enjoyable two days on this course. I learned lots, was given good advice on equipment etc spent loads of time on the lathe and my other half was very impressed with what I produced. Thanks a lot Greg!.
Neil Stripe - - #4302
Two brilliant days...a great experience.
Clear instructions, a relaxed teaching style, and many good tips helped me to produce a couple of pieces that even impressed my kids!
The home made bread and soup on a cold day was also most welcome!
Thanks again Greg
Mike Mason - - #4036
An excellent two day course both my daughter and I both learnt a lot and are keen to carry on the craft of woodturning.
Nick - - #3892
Great course, very hands on and really happy with the things I made. Greg is an excellent tutor and hugely knowledgeable
Andy Leon - - #3886
The best and most effective days that I've spent in a craft course.
Thanks to Greg! Such an excellent and patient teacher who is very enthusiastic and loves to transfer knowledge to his students. You'll do the work on the lathe and Greg motivates his students to do so.
I had a lot of fun and learnt a lot in 2 days and the best part is leaving with a beautiful candle stick and a breath taking bowl of cherry wood from Claygate. So proud and would get back to Greg for further courses , highly recommended!
Nisrine - - #3481
An excellent introductory course - spent almost all the time on the lathe, and got far further than I had expected in two days as a complete beginner. Lots of practical tips and ideas from Greg, as well as lots of fun
Ken Caldwell - - #3287
Absolutely brilliant! My friend took me along for a birthday present and from having no experience at all, Gregory's brilliant, friendly and expert tuition had me turning out a half-decent product by the end of the afternoon. A new experience, some new skills, a very pleasant day and something tangible to show for it. Definitely recommended!
Nick Poole - - #3174
As a complete novice, this was an extremely worthwhile two days spent learning the art of wood turning. It was a thorough and packed with useful advice and I was surprised at how much how much I learnt in such a short time. I wasn't expecting the items I made to come out so well and even my friends were impressed with them.
Paula Burns - - #3171
I did a two day beginner's course with my 12 year old son.
We both had an excellent time. It was particularly pleasing that Greg made the course extremely hands-on, so that we were doing most of the work, rather than watching.
We came out of the two day course with some lovely penguins, two spheres and two bowls!
Edwin Bowater - - #3170
Greg is an excellent tutor - very knowledgable, patient and engaging. I would recommend his courses to anyone
Andy Leon - - #3168
A very informative and practical two days. Greg has a wealth of experience and patience. I was thrilled with the pieces I made. Thank you.

I attended a 2 day introduction to wood turning course. It was well worth the money and very informative. The trainer taught me all the skills needed to start wood turning. I would recommend this course to anyone who wanted to start turning!
Scott marshall - - #2831
The course was brought for me as a Christmas gift, thoroughly enjoyed the two day course, gave me the confidence to emprove my skills with the lathe.
Best two days well spent. Will be booking another course.
Paul fitzpatrick - - #1923
This course was a birthday gift to me from my children and turned out to be one of the best. Not only did I learn an enormous amount, but Gregory's style of teaching and encouraging manner I am sure helped me perform better than I ever expected. A very worthwhile course that was extremely enjoyable and has enthused me to take this 'wood turning thing' further in the future.
Alan Rashbrook - - #1889
I wasn't expected to progress that much in 2 days. The content was great and the hospitality was excellent.
Yigit ilgaz - - #1284
Best two days I've spent in a long time. Learned loads, had a lot of fun and I'm now seriously addicted to woodturning. Oh and the coffee was pretty good to:-)
