Learn how to make beautiful hand turned pens and other functional items in this introductory course. This course would make a brilliant gift for someone looking to take up a new skill or hobby, or, the items you make would be brilliant gifts for anyone. If you are thinking about buying a lathe and want a taster session to really get to grips with the idea, this would be a great way to start your new passion. At the end of this session you will have made two very nice pens. You will also have made a functional item such as a door stop, a European style rolling pin, a spatula, a honey dibber etc. and will have a whole world of ideas for projects in order to use your new skills. What you will learn In short, everything needed to make stunning pens and more! All sessions start with a discussion about health and safety and the tools, and safety equipment you will be using. Followed by tool maintenance and sharpening which leads to using good sharp tools to achieve the best possible results. Your teacher will demonstrate and guide for your skills development explaining why certain techniques work and others would lead to less favorable results. We will learn all about the more specialist pen making tools and make a plan for making our first pen. This pen will be made from your choice of native or exotic hardwood from our stock as well as very high-quality pen components. What you'll take away • Two brilliant pens made by you! • Access to videos and how-to primers made by the course leader • A functional item Notes Due to the nature of this course, participants should be 13+ years of age. This course runs for a maximum number of 2 students at a time (ensuring you get as much support as needed) Lunch and breaks are scheduled in with hot drinks and biscuits available, lunch is not provided, though shops are within an easy walk.
