Stone carving might be described as the removal of stone to discover the beauty of form hidden within. Wherever we may travel we will find beautiful stone carving in temples, cathedrals, countryside parks and busy cities. Forms may be of human, animal, fish or fowl or may be abstract in form to allow the imagination free rein. If you want to understand how to choose the right material be it sandstone, chalk, limestone or marble and recognise a range of tools, mallet, adze, bouchard, feather and wedge then why not try a stone carving course?
This day offers an introduction to stone carving using natural forms for inspiration.
You will be working on small blocks of Maltese limestone – it is a very soft stone and relatively easy to shape with rifflers, files and chisels, so the results will be quick to see. It can also be sawn and a variety of shapes and textures can be produced very easily.
