About the Course
This 2-day course is suitable for beginners (no previous experience necessary) or experienced carvers. Learn about these fascinating medieval green men and take your own completed sculpture home in Maltese limestone.
Arrival for 9am for a prompt start.
A tour of the facilities will be given with a health and safety induction.
Beginners will learn how to hold a chisel and mallet. They will learn how to chase a line, rough out and finishing techniques to create their own relief carved green man.
Advanced students will also learn undercutting techniques.
Students will work on a pre-laid out design of a green man in this condensed weekend course. A soft limestone will be used which is suitable for all ages and strengths to carve.
The large workshop is equipped with individual work spaces, a large selection of hand carving tools and stone working equipment.
Students will learn by observing the experienced and qualified tutors John Swift (West Riding Stonecarving Association(WRSA) co-founder, Chairman and European Stone Carving Festival People's Champion of 2016) and Helen Jukes (WRSA tutor, WRSA Secretary and British representative at European Stone Carving Festival). Students receive substantial individual attention as places are limited to 12 students per course. Early booking is recommended to avoid disappointment.
The workshop is at the base of Shall Lodge Chimney stack. The entrance is on Boys Lane, which is around the back of the main mill entrance. Use postcode HX3 9EZ for workshop entrance.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Couse fees include all materials and use of tools. Students will be supplied with a good quality piece of Maltese limestone. Tea and coffee with biscuits and fruit are also available throughout the day. We recommend bringing a packed lunch.
Car parking is free and available on site. We are also within walking distance of Halifax Railway Station.
Personal protective equipment is also included, except steel toe capped shoes which must be worn in the workshop area. We recommend that warm old clothing is worn by students.
Thoroughly enjoyed this 2 day course. Was amazed that over the two days, with no previous experience, I progressed from having a block of stone in front of me to taking home a Green Man that I am proud to put in the garden.
Helen and John are excellent, patient tutors and the association overall is a friendly and welcoming place. Thanks for your support & advice, if I lived closer to Halifax I'd be back for your longer courses!
