This 2-day course is suitable for beginners (no previous experience necessary) or experienced carvers. Learn about these fascinating medieval green men and take your own completed sculpture home in Maltese limestone.
Arrival for 9am for a prompt start.
A tour of the facilities will be given with a health and safety induction.
Beginners will learn how to hold a chisel and mallet. They will learn how to chase a line, rough out and finishing techniques to create their own relief carved green man.
Advanced students will also learn undercutting techniques.
Students will work on a pre-laid out design of a green man in this condensed weekend course. A soft limestone will be used which is suitable for all ages and strengths to carve.
The West Riding Stone Carving Association is a large well equipped workshop with individual work spaces and a large selection of hand carving tools and stone working equipment.

Easy to contact for any questions I had before the course. Course was well thought out and I achieved so much, from never having done anything with stone to an amazing piece. Tuition was calm, supportive, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I recommend this course to everyone.
The Green Man course was brilliant. Everything on the course was excellently prepared. We got a lovely individual tool roll to use and our stone was marked out ready for us so we could get on carving. The demo's were great and there were lots of individual attention. The workshop was very clean, with a nice kitchen and toilets. The biscuits and fruit kept me going during the breaks. I had a little trouble finding the entrance (it's round the back of the main Mill and I drove right past it), so I would leave a little extra time to find it on the first day. I'm really proud of my green man - thank you for all your help!
The Green Man course was one of the best courses I have ever done, and I was amazed at what I achieved in only 2 days.
Helen and John were both brilliant tutors.
The course was so good that I've now signed up onto the 8 week foundation course and fully expect to carry on with stone carving as a hobby going forward.
It's such a relaxing atmosphere and everyone is so very friendly and welcoming.
Thank you so much for a fabulous weekend carving. I loved being down at the mill and my green man looks fantastic. Excellent tutoring, fabulous weekend and great fun. I phoned Helen to book and had no trouble!
We emailed an enquiry about the course in December 2018 direct. We received an automated reply from yourselves, telling us the tutor’s would get in touch.
We did not here from anybody which we thought was a little rude...so we can not give you an opinion about the course, except we sacked it off in the end.
Hi I hope you received my apologies through your email in that I explained that I didn't receive your request for information. Please let me known if you are still interested in our course by telephone
Thoroughly enjoyed this 2 day course. Was amazed that over the two days, with no previous experience, I progressed from having a block of stone in front of me to taking home a Green Man that I am proud to put in the garden.
Helen and John are excellent, patient tutors and the association overall is a friendly and welcoming place. Thanks for your support & advice, if I lived closer to Halifax I'd be back for your longer courses!
Helen and John are excellent tutors. Thanks so much for helping to develop my skills and for being so friendly! The West Riding Stonecarving Association is a brilliant place. You've worked really hard to produce such a good workshop.
