This workshop is held in my large spacious workshop, where social distancing can easily be achieved. I can provide face masks and gloves there are also hand washing facilities in the studio. Maximum 4 students per course. During the workshop I will teach you a range of stone carving skills to enable you to create a contemporary planter for your home.
On this two day course you will gain a wide range of techniques involved in the hand carving of stone. On day one you will learn a range of stone carving techniques using a range of chisels and a mallet. Begin by carving a block of Bath stone into a cylinder, then learn how to shape curves, and how to hollow out. We will also plan and design the decoration of your planter.
On day two you will transfer your designs on to the bowl and use various decorative techniques to pattern the stone. You will also learn how to finish the top to a contrasting smooth surface. Then plant your planter ready to take home. No previous experience required.
Zoe exhibits her sculpture and letter cutting in exhibitions and galleries across the UK as well as working on private and public commissions from her studio in Devon. The spacious stone carving studio in which this course runs has views across to Dartmoor.

Thanks for a great weekend Zoe.
We are very pleased that we did this course. Your patience, positivity and encouragement were outstanding and a big part of our overall experience.
We loved looking at your beautiful pieces as we worked at our rocks - becoming more and more impressed by them.
I would happily recommend this course to others.
Really enjoyed the weekend. I think we all felt very well looked after, both in terms of sociability and teaching. Zoe was very good at imparting her knowledge to us all. She's an excellent instructor. Fully support everything that's been said by others above. Highly recommended.
I booked the 2 day stone carving course for my mum's birthday. My husband liked the look of it too, so the 3 of us booked on the course in February.
What a great couple of days. It's funny how you can spend all day stood next to each, but hardly talk as you get so engrossed in what you're doing. When you start with a solid block of stone, you can't quite believe you'll have a completed piece by the end it, but we did and were really pleased with what we produced. Zoe was great at showing what needed to be done, ensuring everyone stayed on track and provided help where needed.
Zoe's workshop is in a great location, set up to run small group sessions. It was lovely to see some of her sculptures in the workshop too. A very talented lady :o)
We were very well fed and watered on both days. Zoe and Paul supplied great home cooked lunches along with tasty cakes and biscuits.
We all really enjoyed the weekend and would love to come back and try the letter carving course.
I loved this course and I'm delighted with my stone planter. Zoe was positive and helpful throughout the course. The lunch was terrific. Thanks very much. I look forward to joining you again for another course in the future.
What a wonderful experience this weekend course was.
The spacious studio allowed a comfortable working environment for beginner students and Zoe, a very thorough and helpful teacher, guided us to our hugely satisfying outcome. A lovely stone planter each.
We were made very welcome with teas and coffee and a delicious, home cooked lunch had in friendly company each day.
Hard work and a few aches have definitely not deterred my itch to keep going. I too, am researching tools and would love the opportunity to continue learning and practising stone carving.
Thank you so much Zoe.
The two of us on the course started with a block of limestone each and after two days (12hours ) of hard work we finished with very presentable garden planters with bird motifs.( Our choice). It was a thoroughly rewarding time and so stimulating that I have put in an offer on some stone tools! As a teacher Zoe was empathetic, encouraging, patient and always helpful. Lunch was included and included home made bread, soup, savoury items and puddings, which were delicious. The work was demanding in terms of concentration and both of us had aching wrists but it was most enjoyable and stimulating. Thank you Zoe for an absorbing experience which I would like to repeat, perhaps with a different stone. I'm hooked! Mike
