Dave Cockcroft reviewed: Green wood tables workshop at Lambside Farm - Week 1 (6 Days)

"This is an ambitious and unique course. Peter is a fine guide and tutor in both design and technique. For me the process of making a table top was completely new, whilst the legs and supports were more familiar as an extention of my chair making. Visiting a woodyard to select timber was something I'd previously found very intimidating but going along with Peter helped me feel able to negotiate this on my own in the future. Peter's thoughtful support and minimal intervention were just what I needed. He was always available for a discussion on design aspects and reassuring when I was concerned the table would wobble more than I wanted. He also enabled me to make it in sections so I was able to transport it more easily and with less chance of damage. The workshop is a nice relaxed space and being able to work outside in good weather is a great bonus. The table I made was really beautiful and the people I made it for were more than delighted. If you want to make a table don't hesitate - do this course."

"Very enjoyable and instructive course with Peter who was well supported by apprentice Joe. Went through the whole process of making a stool / small table from start to finish in a beautiful setting in Devon using lots of tools and techniques and different sorts of wood. I had not done this sort of thing before but Peter gave me confidence from the very start that all would turn out well. The other nice aspect of the course was how everyone was happy to help each other out and there was a very friendly and supportive atmosphere throughout. Heartily recommended for a very enjoyable and fulfilling weekend"

"Peter is personable and liberating in his teaching, the facilities are good and the group on the whole were lovely. Definitely considering furthering my green wood work skills here. My bench isn't half bad either."

"Peter's "Introduction to green woodworking" weekend proved to be a joy to attend. I had no experience with green wood but was amazed at how easily it was to control a draw knife and shape the legs for my small table. Peters quiet authority, experience and good humour all helped to make the weekend enjoyable and a genuine pleasure. I would recommend the course if you want to find out what it feels like to make something beautiful with your own hands, even if you have little if any woodworking experience. Thanks again Peter for a great weekend. Tony"

"I had a fantastic weekend on the Introduction to Green Woodwork course. Peter guided us through the process of crafting our own stools in a relaxed and open, yet attentive and thorough way, which I felt empowered us to get the most from the experience. I felt really lucky to learn from someone with such impressive talent and many years of experience in working with wood. The knowledge and skills given on this course are so valuable, I came away really happy, and with inspiration and practical foundations to continue!"

"Peter Lanyon's "Introduction To Green Woodworking" course gives a great all round experience of using traditional hand tools, specialist furniture making tools and power tools to create a unique table or stool. There were 7 people on the course and it was really interesting to see people working with chestnut, sycamore, oak and cherry. They all turned out different. Peter takes you through everything step by step. It was great to split the green wood logs; shave the legs with their unique curves and knots; pick a dusty plank and see it transformed into a beautiful table top; and overcome my apprehension and fear of power tools. I made a beautiful side table and loved being in the workshop and spending the weekend by the sea. It was a fabulous weekend and I'm so pleased with my table. Thank you"

"The Introduction to Greenwood Working course has been a fantastic experience. I have always wanted to learn how to work a piece of wood using traditional tools and methods, as opposed to the usual mundane sawing-planks-for-DIY uses. Peter and Cath were the very model of patience and gentle instruction as I slowly turned an oak log into hewn wood pieces into legs for a stool. At each step they gave me insightful tips and ideas about how I could work the wood I had chosen and kept me well clear of 'rookie' mistakes that would have no doubt ruined a whole days' work! I came away with a stool that I am sincerely proud of, some new friends and a renewed interest in traditional woodworking. I cannot recommend this course highly enough."

"What a joy! Peter's Introduction to Greenwood course has to be the best weekend i've had all year. Peter is diligent and extremely experienced in his craft and has a lovely approach to teaching the various skills you learn throughout the two days. He guides and advises at a steady step by step pace to both the group and as individuals, helping you realise your own design. I'm certainly looking at dates for the chair making course. A charming location, weekend and tutor. Well recommended!!"

"My best weekend in years! I never thought I could do it but turns out I could - thanks to skilled and patient teaching from Pete and apprentice Joe, and the friendly support of a lovely bunch of fellow learners. Pete doesn't do it for you, and I admit to the occasional weak moment where I wished he would; instead he conveys calm confidence that you will 'get it' and so of course you do - and that makes you doubly proud of the finished product. I'm so chuffed with my stool - not without it's 'quirky' features but completely functional and gorgeous - and am seriously wondering what to make next. Thank you to everyone who made it such a great couple of days."

"Really enjoyed my first woodworking experience since school(30 years ago). Even a novice like me came away from this two day course with a fully functioning side table. Pete and Joe were very chilled and patient instructors in a beautiful idyllic setting of Lambside Farm. Also met a great group of people in the process. Saving up for my next course, cant wait to continue improving and building my skills."

"More than learning to work with wood. For me, this course was an enjoyable, relaxing, almost therapeutic couple of days. Thanks to Peter and Jav; learning while doing is what it is all about. A very small, yet vital amount of time is taken up by excellent formal instruction from your two instructors while for every other moment you are encouraged to get hands-on with your log of choice.. and drink copious amounts of tea. P & J are both very kind, friendly and relaxed and possess the knowledge to answer any question - wood or life related. I would recommend this course to those who enjoy the simpler things in life and wood enthusiasts alike. I hope to be back very soon."

Tony Burn reviewed: Green wood creative seating course (6 Days)

"What an excellent course. What could be better, a well equipped workshop, superb location, and above all outstanding tuition, guidance and encouragement. This was my first experience with green wood working and to come away after a week with a finished garden seat exceeded my expectation. The seat has been promoted to the inside of the house as a piece of furniture. The course took us from the use of green woodworking tools through cleaving, shaving and then to jointing and assembling the furniture, all using traditional skills and techniques. I look forward to working with Peter on the Table making course."

"Great course, but does not make me want to quit my day job and work with green wood all the time! Peter and Jav were so patient, knowledge the everyone created their own wonderful pieces in only two days. Incredible when you think what it started like. This course is great for anyone interested in working with wood or their hands, you don't need to be a expert, with the right tools and instruction you'll see anything is possible. Thank you Peter, I look forward to seeing you again soon on a future course to further develop my skills."

"I bought this course as a Christmas present for my husband, Paul. I rang Peter to chat about the course before booking and he was friendly and helpful. Paul loved his present and couldn't wait for the weekend of the course to arrive. He was not disappointed and had a wonderful time with his fellow course-mates and is so proud of the stool he made!"

Bob Gunby reviewed: Green Woodworking - Make a Shave Horse

"Another thoroughly enjoyable day having previously attended the excellent 2 day stool course. Very well prepared and organised, Peter clearly and expertly led us through creating a great piece of kit that will enable me to carry on with Greenwood working at home. Why fork out for a shave horse when you can have so much fun making once yourself for a proportion of the price!? Thanks Peter - an excellent course and another peaceful day in South Devon"

David Howells reviewed: Introduction to green wood furniture making - two days

"I can't recommend this course enough. Pete is a lovely bloke with a passion for what he teaches, in an informative, but very relaxed manner. If working with wood is your passion, or something that you would just like to have a go at, then this course is for you. To create a lovely piece of furniture from a log and a rough sawn hardwood board, was more than I had expected. We started by sawing the log with a 2 person pull saw, and then splitting the log using traditional methods. The split log is then axe shaped into rough legs, which are then shaped on a draw horse and draw plain. Sitting on a draw horse, outside on a lovely morning , with the beautiful scenery around was a tonic for the soul. The legs are then finished with a spoke shave, and tenons are machined onto the ends. The top is free formed from sawn timber, and planned and shaped by hand (There's no sandpaper allowed on this course). Finally the legs are attached the top, and after final finishing, we were all left with a piece of furniture we were proud of. If you are thinking of this course, you will not be disappointed. On my particular course the other student were a great bunch that made the weekend even better."

"Amazing!! Absolutely loved this course. Peter is a fantastic teacher and I would highly recommend this course. "I have had a little bit of wood work experience before but nothing with green wood. Peter was always helpful and patient with what must have been silly questions from me. I really enjoyed the weekend, it was one of the most rewarding ways to spend 2 days. I came away having had a whole load of fun and with a really nice product to show off to my friends. Most of all I find working with wood incredibly relaxing. 5 Stars."
