About the Course
Much more than a green wood chair making course! Learn to make a free-form windsor style chair of your own design in the beautiful surroundings of the Cerdeira artisan village in the mountains of Portugal.
The term 'windsor chair' is used to describe any chair consisting of a slab of wood for a seat, with sticks jointed into it to form the legs and back components. In six days you will learn all the basic green woodworking techniques, and you will take home a completed chair. This is not a course for people wanting to learn to make traditional windsor chairs, but for people wanting to make something unique and personal, which will inevitably express something of their own personality.
This course will run from 16th - 21st of June 2018 in the beautiful artists village of Cerdeira. It will be taught in both Portuguese and English.
In 6 days you will learn all the basic green woodworking techniques, including splitting wood by hand, shaving it to a fine finish, and jointing it. You will also learn to make your own shaving horse, a knowledge that allows you to continue to practice your art when you get home.
Peter Lanyon is a furniture designer maker, a green wood tutor and community project co-ordinator.

Peter is a fabulous teacher. I have done a number of his courses and the idea of taking one in this location in Portugal strongly appeals. I Cannot rate Peter's courses more highly. He is an extremely knowledgeable craftsman, and his teaching is patient, good humoured and always encouraging.

Peter ran the course in such a way that we could make what we wanted but that was realistic in the time available. He gave me all the support and guidance that I needed, his ideas were creative, he taught me some new skills and techniques, he was also really good at showing us how to use the tools and the course was great fun. Peter is a skilled craftsman and he is a very good teacher – he explains things clearly, he is very patient and spent his time fairly with the students. Peter’s workshop is in a beautiful stone barn in stunning countryside and this was also a memorable part of the course, especially as we could work outside in the sunshine and have tea and lunch breaks there was well. His workshop in a beautiful stone barn in stunning countryside was also a memorable part of the course, especially as we could work outside in the sunshine and have tea and lunch breaks there was well. It was a great introduction to green wood working – I highly recommend it to anyone interested in working with wood whatever their level of experience and skill.
