About the Course
Sharp tools are the essence of good woodworking. On this one-day course I will show you how to get your tools into tip top condition. All the main green woodworking tools will be covered - draw knife and spoke-shave, whittling and hook knives, travisher, chisels and planes. Learn the theory and practice of tool sharpening. Bring your own tools. I will provide sharpening stones but please bring your own sharpening equipment for assessment and possible use. I can also advise you on a sharpening kit to bring with you, and jigs we can make to ease and speed the process. You will learn how to hone your own tools to a razor edge, and will take home a simple sharpening kit to keep your tools forever sharp. Please state when booking which tools you are particularly keen to learn how to sharpen.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

Peter is an excellent tutor, I have been fearful of sharpening tools and this course very much demystified the process for me. I went away with sharper blades and the tools and confidence to have a go at home. Peter also spent time showing us hints and tips on how to set up our planes and shaves to get the most out of them. This is a one day course that covers a massive amount of extremely useful stuff.

After basic sharpening theory we were then shown equipment and strategies to use to enable a range of tools to be sharpened. I now feel confident to use the skills that I have been taught to sharpen various tools. Add to that the good company it was a very enjoyable and worthwhile day.

Small numbers of students with group sessions and individual support, plus tool purchasing by Peter for students at cost price. Complete with complimentary tea, coffee and cake. A great day and much learned, with the offer of ongoing information and advice.

Excellent day! 5 people attended, very relaxed but lots of useful information imparted and Peter had time to answer the specific questions of everyone on the course. We covered all kinds of blades, with a quick demo on sharpening cabinet scrapers as a bonus; so not just for green woodworkers. I managed to renovate several of my old poorly sharpened chisels and a spokeshave. It was interesting to meet the others on the course and their enthusiasm for woodworking was inspiring.

A very worthwhile course particularly as I'm a complete novice with no idea about tool sharpening. Peter is extremely patient and knowledgable and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with a small group attending. I felt slightly overwhelmed to begin with but came away feeling I could achieve a sharp tool buy the end of the day. Worth taking your own tools, I had very few to take but still a valuable experience.

A really interesting day. A small number of students and a relaxed atmosphere made the whole experience perfect. I only managed to sharpen 3 of my tools during the day, but the skills and knowledge I gained mean that I should be able to tackle all of my other tools. The tips on sharpening curved blades were particularly useful. I came away feeling confident I could put a good edge on things.
Now I must practice!
