Green woodwork - make a shave horse

About the Course
This shave horse is a hybrid, combining the best features of a number of tried and tested designs. I have added a few of my own touches to make this extremely versatile and portable horse. It can be set up and folded away in a matter of seconds, is fully adjustable, suits all leg lengths and tucks comfortably under one arm. It can be hung on the wall, taking virtually no room in your shed or workshop. A very useful and convenient tool.
During this course you will use a pillar drill and other traditional tools to build your own horse to take home. Tuition will be given on basic woodworking techniques, including measuring, marking out accurately and cutting square to a line. If there is time you can carve your seat for added comfort. It is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced woodworkers.
£75 plus £30 materials.

My son and I attended Peter’s one day shavehorse course last weekend and we both thought it was a fantastic course. Peter was both knowledgeable and helpful and the workshop great. The surroundings were beautiful and the other participants both friendly and helpful. Many thanks Peter.

Another thoroughly enjoyable day having previously attended the excellent 2 day stool course. Very well prepared and organised, Peter clearly and expertly led us through creating a great piece of kit that will enable me to carry on with Greenwood working at home. Why fork out for a shave horse when you can have so much fun making once yourself for a proportion of the price!? Thanks Peter - an excellent course and another peaceful day in South Devon

The first course I did, where I made a small greenwood table, inspired me to return and make a shave horse so that hopefully I can continue with what I've learned. The course did not disappoint. I came away with a fully functioning shave horse thank to Peters expertise, preparation beforehand and excellent teaching. A thoroughly enjoyable day.

This was my second course with Peter at the Devon Green Wood Centre. Having done the Stool Making weekend previously I had caught the green woodworking bug & was pleased to be able to construct a shave horse to (hopefully) do more projects at home. As before the course was well prepared, Peter's demonstrations were clear & easy to follow, the location (wonderful) & facilities were excellent and the group size just right. I can't recommend this highly enough & look forward to doing another course there in the future.

I have wanted to build a shave horse for over a year and finally have a beauty to work on! Was a really good course, Peter was very patient and guides you through new techniques. Can't lie it was hard work but at the end of the day you have a cracking contraption that fits in your boot and you can take with you to workshops to whittle and carve where ever you fancy.

Having been on the introduction to green woodworking course with Peter Lanyon it was obvious I needed a shave horse.... So I was very pleased to come back and build one with five other enthusiasts. Peter's gentle manner and patient advice when giving 1:1 support is invaluable. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and came away with a fully working shave horse and even persuaded my other half to try it next day. Fantastic course with a product that will be used again and again - what's not to like? Take the plunge and go yourself, you'll be pleased you did. Many warm thanks to Peter.

I went on Peter's shave horse course last year and came home with a fully working item that I had made myself. I am not a woodworker but the excellent preparation that Peter did beforehand made the process smooth and easily achievable in 1 day. I was excited to be working in a proper green woodworking shop and using excellent tools, some for the first time in my life. It was great to meet other people from a variety of work backgrounds but who all have some common interest. It was a privilege to be taught by someone as skilled as Peter and his own works are an inspiration. Fully recommended.

With little experience, I was able to make a shave horse, over the course of a day. There was lots of measuring and accuracy needed but help was always at hand. Most of the wood was pre-cut to size but we had to measure drill holes. The shave horse is a great portable design and is a neat piece of kit for a forest schooler.
Peter is a calm, patient and confident tutor. All tools needed were provided and waiting times to use drills were minimal.
The large barn/workshop was a good environment to work in and was well heated by a woodburner. The place can be a little hard to find and I would always follow Pete's instructions rather than the sat nav or GPS.
Value for money - Excellent.
