Amanda Graham reviewed: Experimental Printmaking inspired by Mid Century Design in Derbyshire

"The Experimental Printmaking workshop was great fun and really fabulous learning experience - I have only done a little printmaking, so it felt amazing to discover the fabulous pieces that can be produced using printing techniques, and the versatility of the medium. This workshop focused on Mid Century Design as a source of inspiration for our lino cut prints, but we were free to experiment with how we made and used the cuts for printing, which produced really exciting results! Liz is a wonderful teacher, the workshop allowed just the right amount of time for each new skill to be practised, in a beautiful studio with plenty of tea and biccys and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend Liz's workshops- I did the geli print workshop a few weeks ago and was very keen to return for another one- and will do again in the future :-) . Liz is ultra careful to make sure everything is Covid safe, groups are small, studio well ventilated and participants socially distanced (in a friendly way!), so ideal for people who may be nervous about attending workshops for this reason."

Liz Wellby - Artist, Teacher & Maker responded:

"Hi Amanda, Thanks so much for letting me know about your day; I have a big smile on my face. Printmaking is such a great process, with lots of potential for experimentation and exploration, plus the combining of processes. I know you are going to have lots of fun. Happy printing Liz Wellby"

Everything we needed was provided and the studio is ideal with lots of space. Liz was very encouraging and gave interesting hints and tips on how we could develop our ideas. "There was something special about the day. There were just three of us and we got a very a warm welcome from Liz in her super studio, which is clean and bright and has inspirational views. Liz gave us a good, clear, step-by-step guide and then left us to create and enjoy. She didn't crowd us, but was there to guide, encourage and answer any questions. I've not used this technique before but I am definitely going to try it at home. The day was well paced and we all left feeling very happy with what we had achieved."

Deborah Judd reviewed: Inspired by Bloomsbury: exploring mixed media in Derbyshire.

"This was a really original and very educational workshop that introduced me to the Art of the Bloomsbury group. The pieces we produced were inspired by very colourful and highly patterned images from the amazing house of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant "Charleston" in Sussex. As always, Liz's highly professional, calm and encouraging approach, gave me the confidence to dive into all the tasks with aplomb, if slightly messily. (Sorry Liz! ) Using ink with gorgeous vibrant colours, we worked from life and Liz's beautiful samples as well as the sumptuous images of the artists themselves. The day passed all too quickly. I came away with several pieces including paint and jug designs and collaged compositions. All of which I intend to continue working on. I begun the day tired and stressed but left very relaxed and happy. Thank you Liz for a fabulous day. I look forward to my next visit to the Slipper Studio. A wonderful place to forget the world and to simply draw."

Liz Wellby - Artist, Teacher & Maker responded:

"Hi Deborah, Lovely to hear about your day at The Slipper Studio and thank you for taking the time to comment. I really enjoy teaching this workshop and you are so right about working with those vibrant colours - they are just beautiful. Combine this with images inspired from Charleston House, there’s so much to explore and be inspired by. Attending a workshop is a great way of stepping away from our busy lives and I know that you always benefit from focusing on something new and relaxing. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your pieces Inspired by Bloomsbury. Best wishes Liz Wellby"

Karen Booth reviewed: Inspired by Bloomsbury: exploring mixed media in Derbyshire.

"This workshop is a delightful introduction to the art of the Bloomsbury group, an exploration of their decorated home. I thoroughly enjoyed Liz’s excellent tuition and enthusiasm for her subject. Starting with simple designs on template plates, I moved on to making picture compositions which were fun, and full of vibrant colours, all with Liz’s guidance and inspiration from her lovely samples, and vases of flowers to study. At the end of the session I was thrilled with my joyful picture and was very keen to carry on making more pictures and consider possibilities for decorating my own home with this inspirational art. Thank you again Liz for your encouragement and kindness, skilful instruction, and a wonderful welcome into your studio, which must be one of the most beautiful places to soak up art in Derbyshire! One day wasn’t long enough!"

Liz Wellby - Artist, Teacher & Maker responded:

"Hi Karen, Lovely to work with you again and thank you for telling me about your day at The Slipper Studio - I have a big smile on my face. Jennie Merriman reviewed: Birds on a wire - creating small sculptures in Derbyshire

"Thanks very much for the workshop on Saturday, I really enjoyed it. The day was very easy going without any pressure, yet we managed to produce three quality finished pieces which I now have hanging in my kitchen. It was good to have you working alongside us so you kept the chat going and were always there to help with problems and questions. An easy start to the day, coffee and a brief catch-up between the three of us followed by lots of chat, drinks and biscuits, yet it was easy to opt out when I needed to concentrate on the work at hand. A very good working pace which we were a part of setting. Excellent handouts to use after the weekend to construct new pieces and good product advice and contacts. It was just what I needed to get back into the process of working again in a supportive atmosphere. Sorry but I can’t think of anything that would have made the day any better for me. You are obviously a very experienced teacher and passed on your enthusiasm and enjoyment of the work. A super day"

"We had a fantastic day out with Liz. Having done a little lino cutting in the past but wanting to push it so much further now, Liz taught us some tricks of the trade, made printing and colour mixing non onerous and fun and loosened us up to try new things and techniques from what we had been taught previously. Thanks Liz, you have reinspired us on lino cutting and already Nic has sold a piece :-)"

"Liz's Gelli plate workshop was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it. Held at her beautiful Slipper Studio in the Peak District on a grey blustery day, warmed up with a snug log fire an and handsome Bert, the Studio cat. Only three in the group, Liz had organised us all an individual goodie bag full of information and tools. Liz demonstrated the processes and encouraged us to experiment and explore the technics. The day flew by, I left with a small pile of printed papers and full of ideas how to continue working with gelli plate printing in my own practice. Many thanks to Liz for an enjoyable creative workshop."
