Anne-Marie Leaman reviewed: Explore 1 & 2 colour lino cutting and printing in Derbyshire

"I thoroughly enjoyed my day lino printing with Liz. The location is wonderful and her fabulous studio is the perfect place for a lovely experience. Everything is organised beautifully and Liz was a great host. Liz is very professional and has a clear structure to the day. She gently guided us but allowed us to develop our own ideas and techniques! I am delighted with what I managed to produce and Liz gave us many ideas about how to develop our prints further at home. There was also plenty of information available about where to source materials and we were able to try out different cutters and blocks. Most importantly it was a lovely, creative experience with lots of positivity and happy vibes. Thank you, Liz, for a very memorable day. "

Liz Wellby - Artist, Teacher & Maker responded:

"Hi Anne-Marie, Wow! Thank you so much for your kind words - I’m stunned. It was a pleasure meeting and working with you and I’m so pleased that you had such a positive and successful day here. It was lovely to meet and work with you, sharing your day with your sister and seeing your understanding and skills developing. I particularly liked your use of colour, as you became more confident with your skills. Lino cutting and printing are great techniques, giving you a structure to guide you through from an idea, to a completed print. They are also pretty addictive, so keep an eye out for the signs, which includes buying lots of coloured inks. Best wishes and happy printing Liz Wellby "

"Absolutely Fabulous Day. Learnt sooooo much in a fantasticically built workshop with the expert tution and guidance from Liz (sure I may have tried her patience somewhat😂) Liz truly is one of those rare people who make you feel at ease and teases the best possible outcomes for your artwork out of you. Would highly recommend taking the opportunity to join one of her courses, I certainly will be in the future. (oh and Bert, the cat, is also very endearing even when indifferent to your charms)"

Liz Wellby - Artist, Teacher & Maker responded:

"Hi Christine, Good to hear from you and thanks for letting me know about your day at The Slipper Studio. I am sat with a big grin on my face and I too had a thoroughly lovely day with you and Carol; it’s always special when folks choose a workshop here and travel some distance for this to happen. It’s great to see a piece of work develop from an initial idea to a completed piece, seeing your enthusiasm for the process. There’s still so much that you can develop from your block and your prints. On behalf of Studio Cat, I apologise for his poor manners, but he might be excused as it’s his birthday! Best wishes Liz Wellby"

Sarah reviewed: Create with a gel printing plate in Derbyshire

"The advanced Gelli mono print class was intensive. Liz was able to demonstrate several new processes aimed at bringing more depth to our printing knowledge. In a group setting this was particularly enlightening as each person had a slightly different interpretation and we were all able to learn from each other. Liz’s relaxed manner and knowledgeable instruction helped us to be experimental yet still maintain the structure of whatever we were learning. I would highly recommend this course to anyone with a little printmaking knowledge who wants to develop new techniques in a friendly yet professional atmosphere!"

"Hi Sarah, Lovely to hear from you and thank you for letting me know about your workshop experience - it’s much appreciated. It’s always interesting working with artists whose skill set is already extensive and their focus has been developed and honed with different creative media. You bring different ideas and understanding, but with the curiosity to explore a new way of working, which creates an interesting challenge for me too. There was a lovely energy throughout the day, which you really added to. I hope you have time to continue mono printing, as I feel it will work really well with your painting practice, allowing for an interchange of ideas. Best wishes and happy printing Liz Wellby "

Sarah J-D reviewed: Create with a gel printing plate in Derbyshire

"Liz's Gel plate printing course was a revelation to me! As an experienced painter who was very out of practice with printmaking, this was the perfect course to re-ignite my curiosity and enthusiasm for it. Liz's spacious, light-filled studio is super well organised and Liz herself is refreshingly upbeat and a joy to learn from. Her knowledgeable instruction took me where I needed to go artistically and as her only student that day I felt even more special as she tailored her lesson to suit my many, many questions about everything from printing equipment to design and colour choices. I can't wait to try this new medium in my artistic practice and I've already booked the advanced course scheduled a few months from now! I would highly recommend this course to any artist who would like to broaden their artistic practice or even to a beginner, as Liz's many years of teaching experience gives her the ability to make learning fun, whatever your level of skill. I'm determined to get a lil cuddle from her unbelievably gorgeous studio cat Bert next time ;-)"

Liz Wellby - Artist, Teacher & Maker responded:

"Hi Sarah, I have a huge smile on my face, as I tap out my reply to you. Thank you for taking the time and putting so much thought into your feedback - I really appreciate it. You are clearly going to find gel plate printing a really useful addition to your already extensive skill set. It’s a great process for a warm up, it will also help provide decisions re colour and pattern for your painting, plus you’ll be able to create a range of prints pieces that complement your paintings and explore ideas at speed. I’m looking forward to working with you again a little later in the year, to try out your larger plate. Best wishes Liz Wellby"

"Another great course with Liz. Lovely venue and small friendly group. She took us through the steps of planning and executing a gel print ( At least 20 prints as it's super hands on) , techniques, colour choices, adding patterns and plant materials! We got to try all these different ideas and take away a clear knowledge of the potential of gel printing. Can't wait to get going at home now . "

Ann Blackett reviewed: The First Cut - lino cutting for beginners & rusty printmakers

"I thought I wasn't going to get to this course, but the snow receded enough and I reached Liz's studio in steady drizzle - though not enough to hide the stunning view! I had done a little linocut before, but not for years, so this was a gentle and rewarding re-connection. There was a good mix of explanation and hands-on, with a range of tools and materials; it was also very relaxing, focusing on the design, trying to imagine how it would appear in print, concentrating and creating. A good feeling. I could have carried on cutting for hours, but Liz very rightly marshalled (nicely but firmly!) us into the print room, where we produced our prints using very simple equipment, but wonderfully! I came away with a variety of prints in different colours, plus a block I can can develop with more detail at home, where I am even now planning some greetings cards... A really good day. Also, ample tea and biscuits. Thank you, Liz!"

Liz Wellby - Artist, Teacher & Maker responded:

"Hi Ann, Lovely to hear from you and thank you for letting me know about your workshop at The Slipper Studio. It was great to meet and work with you. Val Morgan reviewed: It’s only natural - creating small wire sculpture in Derbyshire

"A truly wonderful day spent at The Slipper Studio with Liz. Myself and two friends used the course as a pre Christmas get together and we weren’t disappointed. The studio is in a wonderful setting with gorgeous views and with Christmas music playing in the background, copious amounts of tea, coffee and chocolate biscuits, we set about creating our small wire sculptures. We made a hanging ornament on a flower/dried grass theme and then some similar sculptures to stand in a small vase. After lunch we made Christmas baubles and a miniature Christmas tree with a cork as its base. I couldn’t quite believe how many beautiful goodies we came away with. Liz explained and demonstrated the skills needed for the day with clarity and patience with lots of praise and help when needed. A really enjoyable day that I would thoroughly recommend."
