Pip reviewed: Pottery throwing day course in the South Downs

"The one day course was a real treat - such fun going from complete beginner to throwing a pot with the excellent guidance of Rowena. This gave me a very good and real view into the very many stages it takes to make a pot and the skill required. The only improvement would be if there could be an optional subsequent half day to apply the glazes, but I appreciate this may be a logistics nightmare."

The only other time I’ve done wood-turning was at school and that was over 45yrs ago, so his coaching style & guidance (not to mention patience!) helped me produce a lovely bowl. "I did the two day course with Kate at the end of August (sorry it's taken so long to post the review) and it was truly amazing. I came to the course as a complete novice with little or no experience, just an eagerness to learn. Kate was inspiring with her enthusiasm and an excellent teacher as she guided me to experiment with colour mixing and explore different techniques and exciting new ideas. Kate introduced me to new ways to create interesting and fun ‘art’ with different mediums and materials, I learnt so much about what I can do when I allow my creativity to happen, encouraging me to carry this on at home. Spending two days with Kate was an absolute pleasure, we chatted about everything, her knowledge of and passion for art is unlimited and infectious. Kate is the perfect host, her beautiful light and cosy studio will put you at ease, not to mention the lovely cakes, lunch and tea (wine!). I cannot recommend this course and Kate enough, if you want a wonderful experience then do not hesitate to book it now. Thank you Kate and I hope to see you again soon!"

"I thoroughly enjoyed my day learning to make soap at the lovely Discovery Centre. The day was excellent value, I learned a lot about the soap making process and would feel confident making it at home. I came home with lots of gorgeous smelling soaps and instructions on when they can be used. Rachel was very enthusiastic and passionate, this showed in her instructions. She was always happy to answer questions, indeed encouraged them."

"Paul is an exceptional tutor, he manages to impart information in such a way that you are completely absorbed. He also had the knack of knowing exactly when to offer support and when to just let you get on with your piece. The resources and information provided were excellent and the small group size (4) allowed us all to leave with beautiful, finished pieces. I loved learning to make a stained glass panel and can’t wait to try out my new skills. Thank you!"

"I was gifted this for my 40th birthday. I must say, it’s the most fun I’ve had crafting! The online video was so helpful, I loved being able to rewind and make sure I knew what I was doing. Jo puts together a great box, full of everything you need if you are doing this from home. The instructions are super clear too! I ran out of nothing and have so much spare plaster I’m going to get creative with it! Thank you so much! I HIGHLY recommend this kit! "

"Hope was absolutely brilliant talking to us all about the glass fusion process, how to approach designing and how to work with the glass to get the best result. We were a crafty bunch and there was 11 of us in our group. No request was too difficult and help was always on hand if needed. Tea and biscuits was an absolute plus in my book too. I would definitely recommend this course for beginner right up to the more experienced. I just cannot wait to see my finished lantern. "

From the first contact onwards, Sophie was so kind and helpful, and Sandy was brilliant in sharing his skills and teaching us the basics of blacksmithing during our day at the forge. "It was such a lovely session - we learnt how to make the woven bags, various types of handles, fasteners, embellishments and even simple liners. There were lots of materials and fabrics to rummage through to reflect your own personal style. It is simple to do even for complete beginners like me! Rachel is so patient and helpful and even allowed us to take materials home to finish your project should you choose to make a bigger bag than the time allocated allowed. Would highly recommend attending the course as the bags would add a personal touch for homemade presents or small gifts. I will definitely be making more and it is a great Eco project for school too!"

"I had a few hours with Rowena and they were exceptionally useful. As a potter who wanted to improve, Rowena guided me without taking over which helped me enormously with confidence. The session was really enjoyable and relaxed and we packed a lot in, going at my own pace. Rowena is so easy to get along with and is happy to answer no end of questions! Highly recommend. "
