Uncials Calligraphy Workshop in the Lake District

X

Description

The Uncial script was in use as a book hand from the end of the 4th Century to the 8th Century and beyond. Examples of the lettering are found in several Medieval manuscripts including the Stonyhurst Gospel. The Uncials we write today are frequently used for Irish or Scottish poems, prose etc, or writings with a Celtic influence, but can be used for a wide range of pieces. The script is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience and if you have only ever used a pointed pen before, then this is the perfect way to discover the edged pen as it is one of the easier scripts to learn. The letters lend themselves to decoration for cards as well as illuminated initials, so are a very useful addition to your lettering skills. They can be paired with Celtic knotwork for decorative design. We will start the day writing in pencil to better understand the shapes of the letters, then progress into ink. You should be able to complete a small piece, possibly in colour, by the end of the day. Your Tutor, Janice, started to learn Calligraphy 35 years ago. She is a member of both the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) and the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI). She is a CLAS-accredited tutor. She is also a member of the North West Calligraphers Association and regularly attends their workshops based in Cheshire as there is always something new to learn or new tools and materials to play with! As well as teaching, she works to commission .
