About the Course

This day course is aimed at beginners and takes place within a genuine working stonemasons' lodge, in the beautiful setting of the medieval church of St Clement's in North Norwich. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to, either, carve a simple piece or do some letter-cutting.

As well as learning basic carving techniques our customers enjoy learning about the ancient traditions of our guild, that stretches back continuously to 1096. Your tutor, Master Stephen, is one of only twelve international Guild Masters for the European Guild of Master Masons. He is a Blue Riband winner and has been Master Mason at internationally recognised sites such as Windsor Castle and the Doges' Palace. Stephen was bought up in central London and attended a Guild School from the age of four and so has lived most of his life within world of the craft guilds. You can see some examples of his work in our photo gallery associated with this post

Courses only run at weekends and are subject to Master Stephen's availability

I really enjoyed this course and got a good feeling about what stone masonry was about. I also learned a lot about the history and traditions of the guild.
