About the Course
Join us for an introduction to the fascinating art of stone carving. This course is flexible and restricted to no more than 6 students so people can explore the subject matter of their choice and develop their ideas to complete a piece by the end of the day.
After an introduction to the use of tools and studio practise we will look at creating depth and the graphic possibilities of line and texture to bring the form out of the stone.
Your tutor Peter Graham has well over 20 years experience in teaching and has completed many private and public carving commissions including work with the National trust and English Heritage. He will lead you with unfailing patience and enthusiasm through the process of carving
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All tools, stone and safety equipment are provided. A good range of source material is available, but students are encouraged to develop their own ideas and Peter is more than happy to discuss possible projects before the course. As course content is tailored to each student, it is a good idea to discuss possible themes beforehand to ensure I can prepare a suitable piece of stone beforehand.
Refreshments are a necessity and tea, coffee, cake are supplied.
Peter Graham is a very skilled stone carver, but even more importantly ( for me), he's a great tutor. I did a stone letter carving intro course for just 1 day. I did not find it as easy as expected but with Peter's patience I learnt a great deal and was very happy with the results. The facilities were ideal and Peter was very enthusiastic and friendly. Overall: 10 out of 10.

Recently retired, my wife decided that I needed a new hobby and booked me onto a weekend course with Peter at his workshop at the Red Store in Lerryn, a really beautiful setting. Peter is a fantastic tutor and within a couple of minutes I was hooked on the hobby. Peter provides superb one-to-one tuition, all the carving tools, all the Portland Limestone, endless tea and coffee and a superb (home grown) luncheon.
I have since, with Peter's guidance, purchased a starter set of stone carving chisels and a mallet and now, whenever I get under my wife's feet (which I seem to have a knack of doing) I head off to the garage and happily chip away........
I have already booked a further tuition day with Peter next month.
Give it a go or you'll never know.......
