During this one day workshop you will learn how to design, cut and shape various tiles and recyclable tesserae and make up to 3 jewellery pendants.
Whilst the glue is drying I will provide a light lunch. This workshop will take place in my home in Birsay, next to the sea and near to the Brough of Birsay, and ancient Viking settlement. We may have a little walk to the beach whilst the glue is drying.
When we return we will grout the pieces and choose either a ribbon or ball chain to hang them on, unique gift bags are included for your unique pendants.
Then they will just need a polish at home the day after. These are ideal special gifts or simply for yourself!
These courses run on demand so please contact me for future dates, or to arrange a personal date for you if there are 2 or more people.
I have a double/twin room for let if required, please enquire for availability.
Orkney is a beautiful place full of ancient monuments and gorgeous coasts and sunset. There is a strong inspiration for the arts here.
A wide range of materials and tesserae is provided to feed your creative juices, recycled materials are also available such as china, beads, shells, old jewellery as well as more conventional tessarae such as glass and ceramic. If you have any tiny bits or pieces at home that you would like to incorporate into the pendant please bring them along with you.
Along the way we will discuss various mosaic techniques and possible future projects. Also covering the essential safety rules and best practices. Books will be on hand to help with the design process and a selection of completed mosaic pieces will be on show to see what further possibilities are available using this exciting medium.
This workshop is suitable for beginners as you will be offered as much support as is needed, however a certain amount of dexterity it needed as the pieces are quite small that we work with. You will be helped and encouraged to explore your own creative process.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
All materials are provided, all you need to bring is an apron and a small box to carry your pendants home in.
Tea and coffee and a light lunch will be provided throughout the day.
6 hours (flexible times to suit)

I spent 3 wonderful days in Catherine's Airbnb room which was lovely, spacious, light, beautifully clean and inviting. Catherine did a wonderful job as my tour guide; we travelled all over the islands and took in all the sights. I also spent two days on two of Catherine's mosaic courses which were both thoroughly enjoyable. Day One I completed a terracotta pot and on Day Two I completed two necklaces with shells and crockery etc found on the beach nearby, and left with materials for a third. Thank you Caroline for your hospitality, patience and instruction and for giving me the total Orkney experience. I can't wait to come back for another visit.
A good course on the breaking of China for jewellery with the additional benefit of a trip to Pendle Museum. A good course and Catherine was a great tutor. Thoroughly enjoyed it
I attended the Mosaics course in Higherford Mill yesterday. Catherine was a very good tutor and even though I struggled at the start (don’t let that put you off!), Catherine was very helpful & I managed to produce a lovely heart. I haven’t had time yet to grout my heart, but am looking forward to seeing the finished article very soon. I was a total beginner and would recommend this course to everyone. Thoroughly enjoyable day.
