Natural Dyeing & Eco-printing, Highlands, Scotland

About the Course
We teach Natural Dyeing the traditional way as well as Eco-printing directly onto fabric. You can join us for a weekend of dyeing fleece, silk and cotton outdoors over outdoor fires, or a weekend printing on paper, cotton and silk with flowers and leaves. Our courses are run from Crochail woods in the Highlands of Scotland, in a beautiful area just up the road from Loch Ness. Over a weekend you can learn about and make dyes from local foraged plants and ancient imported dye plants. We usually make between 7-8 dyes over a weekend which makes about 25-30 shades, a beautiful rainbow of colours. We forage in the woods for dye plants some of which include; Nettles, Gorse, Bracken, Birch bark and Ragwort. We will also make dyes from ancient imported dyes such as Madder and Indigo, which have been used in dyeing in the Highlands for centuries. We dye our own Shetland fleece (you can meet the sheep over the weekend), as well as silk and cotton. On our Eco-printing weekends participants forage for flowers and leaves and extract their colour and print directly by steaming onto fabric. Each guest takes home samples and a unique hand printed silk scarf. Eco-printing is creative and enjoyable and has an element of excitement when our bundles of steamed goodies are opened at the end of a session.
Our guests enjoy the whole experience here; being in the woods, making fires, stirring pots and making natural dyes with a view of Strathglass is pretty special.
Our course runs from 10am-4pm on both days and we provide lunch. There is a list of great local places to stay on our website, including camping and B&B's. We also have a yurt guests can rent in the woods. We are 40 minutes from Inverness, which can be reached by train or plane (Easyjet flies from London, Manchester and Bristol).
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

This was a thoroughly inspiring and enjoyable course. Rosie is a superb teacher and I gained the confidence to start natural dyeing myself. The lunches were excellent and the environment beautiful. I will definitely return for other courses in this little piece of fibre-y heaven!

Had an excellent weekend at the natural dyeing course, the location is fantastic. Rosie is a great teacher and had a great time collecting plants in her local woods, we fit so much in over the 2 days I would have loved to stay longer. It has given me a great base for starting to experiment with colours. Would definately recommend and will be back
