6 hour 'Introduction to Natural Dyeing' workshop, 10am-4pm, ELKA studio, Littleton, Hampshire.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The workshop will teach you the basic principles and practice of natural dyeing using everyday kitchen and foraged dyestuffs. There will also be an introduction to indigo and over dyeing.
Spaces are limited to ensure you receive as much guidance as you need.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and those that have a little experience who would like some more practical guidance.
We like to work with as many sustainable materials as possible and, where possible, we try to source end of line and second hand materials that would otherwise go to waste.
You will be dyeing a range of natural yarns from hand spun recycled banana yarn to linen and organic cotton.
ABOUT YOUR TUTOR
Claudia, Ellie's mum, has been teaching English for over 30 years, specialising in prison education.
Building on a life long interest in knitting and dress making she teamed up with Elka textiles, to produce naturally dyed yarns for fashion and upholstery fabrics.
In response to many inquiries about natural dyeing, we are now delighted to be offering this 6 hour workshop.

We had an absolutely fabulous day dyeing with Claudia. I think our enthusiasm bubbled over at times (Claudia had to struggle to control us 🤭) and by the end of the day, we had a wonderful sample book and the information for future experiments with natural dyes. You will probably discover us foraging in the local woods!
A great course in a beautiful location and we were thoroughly spoiled by Margaret with her breakfast treats and very yummy lunch.
If you are curious about what can be achieved with dyes sourced from the wild, then I recommend this course heartily.

I loved the workshop! Claudia was a brilliant teacher. I learnt so much but also had a lot of fun doing the practical elements. She gave us handouts with all the information we needed to continue experimenting at home. The location was beautiful and inspiring and Margaret’s food was delicious! It was a lovely opportunity to meet like minded people and explore another creative skill. I will definitely be back!

This was a very instructive course and Claudia made us all welcome and had everything very well organised. The handouts were excellent with lots of information and well presented content. We covered a lot of ground giving us plenty of hands on experience and good opportunities to ask questions and all of our sample sheets to go home with. I feel confident enough to continue experimenting at home. The venue and atmosphere was lovely with delicious food provided by Margaret and so nice to meet and get to know others. Thank you and will definitely look in to attending another workshop.

I thoroughly enjoyed today’s comprehensive workshop in natural dyeing with Claudia. I found it an inspirational day learning lots. I look forward to experimenting at home with culinary, locally foraged and exotic plants used in the art of dyeing natural materials. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for a wonderful day Claudia! ... and thank you Margaret too for your delicious and wholesome cooking and hospitality offered at break times during the workshop today.
Response from Elka:Thank you for the lovely review Amma, i'm delighted that you enjoyed the workshop and the venue. Very best wishes, Claudia
I had a wonderful, relaxing day. Claudia is an excellent teacher, and so organised with all the material's, equipment and information sheets. It was fascinating to learn the basics of using natural dyes, and lovely to come away with our sample sheets, and even a shibori dyed handkerchief! Also great to meet the other 'students', and hear what their creative interests were.
Lovely to see Ellie again - earlier in the year I attended one of her classes for Beginners Tapestry, which was also excellent!
And finally, thank you so much to Margaret for making such a delicious soup, taking my food intolerances into consideration. Lovely refreshments too.
I think your jewellery is gorgeous and will be visiting again at some stage to treat myself to one of your pieces.
Response from Elka:Hi Mary, thank you so much for the lovely reviews on all fronts! It was a pleasure to meet you/ see you again and we're so glad you enjoyed the workshop. Very best wishes, Claudia & Ellie.
What a fabulous day learning natural dyeing with Claudia. I echo all the positive points made by others, and would say that Claudia is an excellent teacher. Everything was prepared meticulously and the day’s lessons were prepared to maximise our learning in the time available. Fabulous resources to take home and enable some alchemy to get going at home straight away! Loved it and a big thank you!
Response from Elka:Thank you for the great review Emma. We're so happy you enjoyed the workshop and feel you can now get going at home! Very best wishes, Claudia
Really fun and relaxing day in a really peaceful and gorgeous setting. It was really easy to ask questions and open a dialogue about natural dyeing and the range of shades it can create. Nice small group so there's enough space in the workshop and time with the teacher for everyone. We all got to leave the course with a sample sheet full of different fibres, dyed with different plants in an array of colours. We also got given information sheets that we can refer back to in future for own practice.
Response from Elka:Hi Lucy, thank you so much for coming along, and for the lovely review. Best of luck with your next term at uni, can’t wait to see what you create!
What a great day and fab venue. Ellie and Claudia made us feel very relaxed and welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. The day was informative and fun. Learning about the amazing colours nature has given us was completely amazing. The day was well balanced with information and hands on experience of natural dyes. I'll definitely be signing up for the weaving course and would highly recommend the natural dyes course as an informative and inspirational day.
Response from Elka:Hi Fi, thank you so much for the lovely review. Its was great to have you on the workshop and we're so glad you enjoyed the day. Really look forward to seeing you again sometime in the future!
Having done an Elka course (Beginners Weaving) earlier this year with Ellie, I was excited at trying out another workshop offering with Natural Dyeing taught by Ellie's mum Claudia. Having read a bit about dyeing processes before and found it a bit confusing, this workshop was wonderful and perfect for beginners. Claudia is a knowledgeable and friendly teacher, happy to answer any questions, and gives clear instruction. Having a small class size meant a relaxed and friendly atmosphere which allowed time for extra help when required. The location was also lovely at Turner & Thom, with a nice outdoor picnic spot for lunch amongst the trees, and teas and coffees throughout the day. I feel I have enough knowledge now to have a go at home with more confidence than before. Definitely recommended - a lovely way to spend a day!
Response from Elka:Hi Freya, It was such a pleasure to have you on another workshop and thank you so much for the lovely review! X
