Duration: 1 day
at Cowshed Creative (Kentmere Farm Pods and Creative Courses)
About the Course
Mexican Day of the Dead festivities unfold over two days in an explosion of colour and life-affirming joy at the beginning of November. Join the celebrations and create your own exotic shrine using papier-mâché modelling techniques, paint and collage.
In towns and cities throughout Mexico, revellers parade in exotic costumes, create colourful papier mache figures and shrines and make offerings to lost loved ones. These exuberant celebrations have been embraced across the world. Join us to create a box style shrine, with doors, that can be used to store photos and artefacts. A quirky and original art work that is fun to make and requires a good sense of humour and a zest for celebration!
Kay Sandham Banks is an old pupil of the Lakes School, Windermere, who after going to Carlisle Art college & Trent Poly, set off for a practice job interview and came back 27 years later! She has extensive experience teaching Art and Design, Photography and Design Technology to Secondary and Primary pupils in Tower Hamlets, Kennington and Wandsworth as well as teaching Adults for Camberwell Probation Service. The workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a traditional converted Lakeland barn at Browfoot Farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay on the farm.

What a lovely day, with good company, good food, and a chance to make something really different. I have just finished off my Mexican Offrenda, and am really pleased with it. The course was really well organised and gave us plenty of scope to be creative with help and advice when needed. Thanks Kay and George for a creative and relaxing day.

What a lovely day we had! The setting is beautiful, located in among the hills of Kentmere. The Cowshed is a lovely creative space with a roaring log burner and plenty of space to work. The food was delicious and plentiful - soup and lots of cake, with gluten-free requirements well-catered for - thank you!
The creating element was clearly explained by Kay and well-supported at every stage. Everyone was able to achieve success regardless of their ability. Resources were plentiful and enabled everyone to create something that was very much their own. I am really pleased with my Offrenda and felt a real sense of achievement as I am not confident in my artistic abilities at all.
Thanks to Kay for a lovely relaxing and yet productive day, and to George for being a great host. I look forward to coming back and maybe staying in your lovely pods too! I can thoroughly recommend the whole experience.

A wonderful colourful day! Cowshed Creative was easy to find and beautifully nestled in the fells, the barn was welcoming with a huge roaring log fire and lots of inspiration already laid out for us. Kay was a warm-hearted, fun, clear teacher - dressed like Frida Kahlo! - who had lots of ideas and practical suggestions when my piece got a little more complicated than the brief.
The atmosphere around the table was open and friendly, we all got to know each other a little whilst exercising our creative muscles and making - chatting and making, what a good combo! And with homemade food - seemed like a kaleidoscope of different breads, choice of soups (OK we tried them all!) desserts and cake. A lovely touch was a 'chillout zone' by the fire with inspirational books if you needed a break.
In short I thoroughly enjoyed my day and am terribly proud and excited by the piece I made... definitely recommend. Thank you Kay and Cowshed Creative.
