This footstool making workshop is perfect for beginners, people who have a little bit of upholstery experience and those who would like a refresher. You will be introduced to modern upholstery techniques and learn to create a footstool to take home and keep.
These footstools make a perfect addition to any home and can also be used as a coffee table if you put a tray on top. There are 3 different size footstools to choose from -
15" x 12", 15" x 24" and 24" x 24", but if you'd like to make a different size let me know. You also have a choice of legs for your footstool which are all made from solid wood.
The course will run from 9.30 am Saturday and we should be finished around lunch time on Sunday. There will be a maximum of 4 people on the course, working in a relaxed atmosphere and at your own pace.
Each student has their own work station and tools so COVID-19 social distancing restrictions are adhered to. Hand sanitiser, face shields and face masks are provided but you are welcome to bring your own. All equipment is disinfected before and after each use.
You will learn every step of the process from cutting the foam and drilling holes in the base board - you are not just given a kit of parts to put together. The aim of this course is to make a beautiful, professional looking footstool, but also for you to leave with the confidence to make more footstools on your own at home.
The course will be held in a converted barn workshop at Redhills near Penrith on the fringe of the beautiful Lake District National Park. The studio is a few minutes away from Junction 40 of the M6 and there is free parking on site.
Greggs and Burger King are around the corner and the Rheged centre is a 10 minute walk away. Accommodation is plentiful, please let me know if you need a recommendation for your stay.
The price of the course is £200 including all materials except 1 metre of cover fabric.

What a brilliant weekend spent with Jay and two other students, making our bespoke footstools. Jay is an excellent tutor - a cabinet maker who is knowledgeable, patient and encouraging. She was happy to repeatedly demonstrate any tasks that we were struggling with, to make sure that our handiwork was as near perfect as possible.
It was a great atmosphere with a lot of laughs, coffee and cake. We all took a Covid test (provided by Jay) at the start of the first day, to ensure safety.
At the end of the weekend, it was very satisfying to take home a beautiful, handmade footstool that will match our settee scatter cushions.
Thank you Jay!
This course with Jay was an excellent way to spend a weekend with a wonderful outcome. Jay is a brilliant tutor, taking things calmly and clearly, yet with fun and positive help. Great tips along the way should we want to go and make more stools. Everything provided other than the top material. During these Covid times, it felt very safe as Jay had gone to great lengths to ensure as much cleaning and sanitisising was achieved both before and during the course and visors and hand sanitiser provided individualy. You won't regret taking part in the course.
Response from The Bespoke Home - Furniture Maker:Aww, thank you so much Bee! That's so lovely to read. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Let me know if you need tips or materials when making more footstools! :-) Jay
Had a great 2 days with Jacqueline in September making a bespoke footstool for my husband to match up with his new leather chair. Jacqueline is a great tutor. She will not let you take home a footstool that is not perfect. She was very thorough and went over the more difficult aspects of making the footstool several times. Do not be afraid to attend this course because of Covid 19. All our tools were cleaned before we used them and the venue was spotless and safe.
Highly Recommended. Jacqueline is a very talented young lady.
I had the most brilliant two days making my footstool with Jacqueline. She is a great teacher and I can't recommend the course highly enough. It is great to learn in a relaxed manner and to learn the skills to enable you to make a fantastic footstool. Mine takes pride of place and people always ask where I bought it!
I think that says it all really. Book on the course you wont regret it and great value for money.
I joined this weekend course to learn how to make a footstool from scratch, have some fun and gain an insight into the wonderful world of upholstery and by jove, I certainly achieved all three things and more!
Jacqueline is a fantastic tutor ensuring that she gave me the encouragement, help and mentoring all though the process. The weekend was well organised (with great cake!) and the attention to detail and skills I walked away with have armed me to tackle my first solo footstool project, there will be no stopping me now!
I thoroughly recommend this course, you will walk away with a footstool to be proud of.
Response from The Bespoke Home - Furniture Maker:Aww, Nicola, I'm so glad you enjoyed it :-) Thank you for your wonderful comments. It's certainly my aim for you to leave armed with the confidence to make more footstools. The fact you had a great time learning is the icing on the cake! x
Helpful, knowledgeable and friendly tutor. Great atmosphere in the sessions. Lovely weekend.
Response from The Bespoke Home - Furniture Maker:Thank you Kelly, glad you enjoyed it! :-)
This is an excellent course which enables you to make your own bespoke footstool- I am absolutely delighted with the one I made. Jacqueline is a friendly, knowledgeable teacher who ensures that you understand every step of the process. She is on hand to assist and guide you when necessary whilst also allowing you to develop your skills. I throughly enjoyed the course: thank you.
Response from The Bespoke Home - Furniture Maker:So glad you enjoyed it Jo, you were a pleasure to teach. Thank you! 😁
This was a fabulous course and I learned a tremendous amount over the two days. The tutor was excellent, offering individual help and advice throughout the process whilst allowing us to work at out own pace.
I am absolutely delighted with my footstool and I am eager to have a go at making another one.
Highly recommend this course. Very comfortable class with an experienced and patient teacher. You leave with a footstool to be proud of and the ability to make more at home. Fab way to spend a weekend in the Lakes.
Great course! Unlike some courses where you basically stand and watch, this course you get to do everything yourself which was great. Jacqueline is very patient and gets things across very well. Highly recommend this course. Left with a footstool to be proud of.
Jacqueline is highly skilled and talented in her craft and was willing to share her knowledge. This course is well worth every penny - highly recommended.
I was making the stool for a gift so a lot was riding on it! Jacqueline helped me all the way with her patience and uncomplicated style of teaching and was very encouraging when things didn't go quite right! The class size was small and personal which added even more value to the course fees. I'm very tempted to come back and make one for myself! This would make a great gift experience too.
Big thank you Jacqueline for a brilliant course and experience A*
Response from The Bespoke Home - Furniture Maker:Thank you Carolyn :-) Was a pleasure having you on the course and I look forward to welcoming you again. Maybe stay a bit longer this time and tick off a few more fells!
I was looking for something totally random and new to try. I found this course, it sounded interesting so took the plunge. I'm so glad I did... being a complete novice, Jacqueline made me feel at ease straight away, she showed us the how, where, what and why and was very patient with any questions or help required. I'm so happy with my new upholstered footstall, it looks great in my living room, I'd recommend this course to anyone looking for something different!
Response from The Bespoke Home - Furniture Maker:Thank you so much Mandy, I'm thrilled you enjoyed it and are loving your new footstool :-)
I absolutely loved this course and am thrilled with my footstool, it looks so professional! Jacqueline was a very hands on teacher and was very patient with me. I was a bit out of my comfort zone as this is not something I would usually do but Jacqueline really made me feel at ease. I would highly recommend this course to anyone and it is perfect for a beginner like me!
Response from The Bespoke Home - Furniture Maker:Thank you Maureen! I'm so glad you had a good time and love your new footstool! :-)
